  • It’s been a big couple of weeks for Donald Trump, whose first criminal case has just wrapped up with a guilty verdict after a five-week trial.
The trial centred on Trump’s alleged cover up of a ‘hush money’ payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.
In today’s podcast, we’ll cover off on the trial itself, how it came to be and what it means for the presidential hopeful.

Can I just confirm that you can’t vote for President if you are in prison, but you can run for President? Actually, I think that some traditional Republican states won’t even let you vote if you are an ex-prisoner?!
Here in Oz, I believe that you cannot run for position of an MP if you have been convicted of a serious crime (definition of serious?) or are a bankrupt.

Yes, you can run for the US Presidency as a convicted felon. Otherwise, all that the incumbent president had to do to remain in power is to convict his political opponent in a jurisdiction where the opponent has the least support.

@@deleted01 fair enough, and I see what you did there. So then, I repeat, where is the logic or fairness in ex-prisoners not being ABLE to vote?

@@btothec4650I don't think it's fair to bar ex-convicts from voting. I think voting rights should be automatically restored upon release from prison. There are only 10 states where that's not the case right now (and 15 states where voting is prohibited for parolees and probationers), so it's becoming a minority practice.
