    Living in Finland myself, the strikes really don't have the support of the majority. Within the first waves most shops were open as usual and really only the public transport was stalled. The government here is only proposing to change workers rights to same level as they are in neighboring countries (Sweden, Norway) to help draw more investments to Finland by making us more competetive against others. The workers unions have been on a downward spiral for decades and this seems to be their last gasps of breath helped by the left opposition. And the limiting of strike rights is only meant towards political strikes, which are also banned in almost every EU country. They are not limiting the right to strike against an employer, but the right to strike against policy.

    You guys kind of buried the main complaint of the farmers in this summary. Based on interviews I've seen this is a protest that revolves around ever increasing EU farm regulations, with other quality of life and related economic causes being tacked on after the fact or as they've arisen. This has been building up for quite a long time, and the subsidy cuts, fert and fuel cost increases etc looks more like a final straw than anything else.
    My read on it is that EU politicians have suffered from a bit of main character syndrome lately (tbf, normal for politicians and bureaucrats) and have forgotten to account for the practical effects of their regs. They forgot why successful policy changes are incremental and infuriatingly gradual, and went for that sweet instant gratification of radical policy change. It's a high personal political pay off/maximum negative societal repercussions way to do government. This is a peek at those repercussions, and the same thing would happen in literally any country on earth.

    I totally understand these farmers. Local laws massively impact farming expenses with rules on fertilizers, pesticides, etc., but also allow produce in from countries with less onerous provisions. Europe has to decide: does it want to micro-manage and determine what it's own farmers can do, or does it want to allow low cost foreign alternatives in that are not forced to abide by the same laws. either get rid of the laws, or just commit your population to expensive, bureaucracy-heavy foods.

    • @Spido68_the_spectator
      @Spido68_the_spectator Před 4 měsíci

      The laws are here to increase quality and stop the destruction of environment and fertile ground (you know, the 2 crucial components of high yields ?). And they get applauded by critics worldwide.
      The problem is, they are too heavily detailed sometimes.
      The food produced isn't that expensive either. It's the agro industry that's purchasing at too low prices from farmers while giving itself big profits.

      @@Spido68_the_spectatorthe food produce isn’t expensive precisely *because* they can purchase from non European farmers. If European farmers are subject to such strict regulation that they can’t compete with foreigners should the government not heavily prioritize their produce over foreign?

    • @Spido68_the_spectator
      @Spido68_the_spectator Před 4 měsíci

      @@davidlennyman444 No, food prices with local ingredients and for local fruits and stuff isn't mindblowingly expensive as many media outlets say.
      I agree the government must prioritise local farmers, but they need to do it smart. One possibility includes tariffs on cheaper import, and using those tariffs to subsidize local farmers. The price difference will be neutralized and its amount will be contained (higher than the imports but still lower than local price)

    0:17 quick correction: if you haven’t been living under a rock and have been up with the times concerning these farmers, you’ll probably know that the prices are spiking under the control of Brussels, attempting to make people frustrated at the current situation to direct the, to a green agenda. The war has been going on for a couple years now, that’s no excuse and if it is, then shouldn’t have thrown 50bn euros.

    It is not due to Russia's war in Ukraine but due to the sanctions imposed on Russia that has put up energy costs needlessly since Russia is still supplying gas and oil under cheap contract prices to those EU countries like Czech, Hungary and Austria that continue to take them whereas Germany and others that could take them since pipelines like Yamal and Brotherhood are still operable but not in use due to deliberate German policy - Russia has offered to supply gas through the remaining Nordstream line that the US failed to blow up but Scholtz has refused. The result is high cost diesel and a lack of fertilizers that farmers need except at substantially higher prices What does Finland expect when they turn their back on the lucrative Russian market to join NATO and so have become an economic backwater of the EU like the Baltic States that have the same plight.

    What people need is a direct democracy with local governments ...
    By a direct democracy I mean Majority vote of 80%, obligatory voting, min age 30, when voting you always get three choices yes, no and I want something else ... In a direct democracy the people would have to approve any decision made. This is the only way we can keep our rights and our dignity !
    By local government I mean that a country should be divided in smaller regions that reflect the local population's preferences in it's values, it's costumes etc. So local business and a local economy is prioritized over an international one this would not exclude international trade it's just that the local business and the local citizen's values are prioritized.

    this is exactly why the US blew up the gas pipelines from Russia which used to supply so much of Europe. Russia had turned off the tap to put pressure on European governments, which meant that the tap could be turned back on if they stopped supporting Ukraine due to local political pressure such as these riots. With the pipelines destroyed this is no longer an option

    There was a farmer that won the lottery, asked what he would do with the money he said "Guess I will keep farming until the money's all gone". Small Farmers do need to adapt and diversify their income streams, farming alone isn't enough. Add solar energy production to crop fields, some plants like strawberries produce higher yields with partial shade. Farmers in west Texas have added Shrimp & Fish farms, seafood can be grown in large tanks almost anyplace. Bioreactors are easy to build to grow algae as protein source for human & livestock consumption, algae uses photosynthesis to convert CO2 & water into oxygen and carbohydrates, some algae types produce fuel oil. If anything, politicians might just create the incentive for farmers to ADAPT, those that can't adapt will die off.
