    My favorite detail about this is the change in her appearance at the end of the film. Having spent what seemed to her like months chasing Scales, she only realizes at the end of it all that it had in fact been years. Years during which her youth faded away, her hair began to go gray, and her body became worn and scarred in pursuit of her single minded goal - years she would never recover. A beautiful short film that communicates more in fifteen minutes than most fail to do over two hours.

    That is one resourceful, resilient, and brave girl fighting off predators, killers, dragon, and escapes the cave when it collapses. I didn't know her dragon was a female. Absolutely stunning film in all sense of the word. She couldn't help herself as she has been fighting for self preservation for years and didn't know it was her dragon ... so glad to see she will make up for her mistake by taking care of the little one no doubt. She appears to be alone in the world and to find something that made it's way into her bed to hold her hand ... she learned what loving and losing something felt like. I just love dragon movies.

    I was completely wrapped up in this story. What an excellent tragedy--a morality play about the hubris of human assumptions and how the quest for revenge can blind us to what is important. Wonderful rendering of dragons and humans alike. This short built instant empathy and a desire to see more.

    In my opinion this short was trying to say "Though you fight to protect the ones you love, don't lose sight of why you fight for them to begin with". I believe that Sintel had originally started out with a mission to save a dear friend, but as time went on--though it was not displayed very clearly as there were only vague scenes of traveling, and how she lost her way (metaphorically speaking) was never explained--I think she may have begun to lose hope of ever finding Scales. She felt such a gentle sense of hopelessness that I believe she failed to realize how much time had passed since Scales was taken, and how much she had aged. As the old man said "Sintel had not failed her friend, she had only failed to see." If the video had been designed to be longer, I believe the writers would have had the time to actually explain how and when Sintel lost her way. Which I believe would have made this short ten times better than it is. Overall, I really did like the animation, even if there were a few weird kinks here and there.

    • @comradecam9530
      @comradecam9530 Před 10 lety +15

      I agree with you. I also think its a lesson in making quick judgements and assumptions without considering the potential consequences of our actions. Scales stopped and sniffed her like he had done when they first met, yet Sintel gave no thought to the dragon's pause and used the opportunity to kill it. The only downside to this film I think is it tries to cram an hours worth of potential material into 15 minutes for a short film, thus skimming over a lot of things. Regardless I loved it. :)

    I believe it's about accepting grief and moving on. But everyone will get their own meaning behind the story. That's what truly makes it a masterpiece. It's different for everyone because it's meant to be different for everyone. True art gives you the ability to create different stories within one piece on your own many times.

      I didn't find Sintel to have an empty ending at all. It is full of pathos and lessons about the human tendency to blind obsession--to act before considering all the possibilities and to see situations as black and white. We do not see the redemption of our protagonist, that is true. But stories that are closer to life often render the truth of pain and loss and guilt.

    1. Texture, detail and shading.
    2. Natural motion.
    I've found natural motion to be more impacting than perfect rendition. Natural motion seems to be the more challenging given all the fits and starts it's gone through over the years but, lately I'm getting blown away by what I'm seeing.

    Alright people, settle down. When scales was taken she went on her quest to search for him but when she arrives; still thinking scales is a baby, she strikes at the adult Dragon from whom she thought was from her memories who ended up being scales:the baby she was after. Looking back at herself, she noticed she has changed; many years have passed by in result she is old and decrepit. From her immense guilt and shock she strips from her weapon and walks as if to walk forever, the baby Dragon from before has nothing left and follows the woman.
    In the end the lesson is Don't get distracted so much that everything around you, you're oblivious to.

  • @mikeydrago-dt8by
    @mikeydrago-dt8by Před 10 lety +8

    Why did she hurt her? I didn't cry, but I certainly felt the emotion. Poor Scales. I kno it was self defence and all, but she should have realised. The moment Scales sniffed her, I would have thrown my weapon away having then realised that the dragon attacking, was Scales. All it was was natural instinct. Scales was protecting her baby. I'll never accept the innocent blood she spilled, which led to the dragon's death. But I can understand. The bond between them wasn't very strong, so neither of them realised who it was they were fighting. Neither of them recognised each other. This is always a fatal mistake, which I was using in my story, Tales of a Kunoich.

    Wow, so good. Really well done to make the audience feel so strongly in such a short period of time. **********Spoilers********* She had obviously overcome so much, and honed her instincts to take advantage of any enemy's weakness that for me that fatal moment made sense. The fact that it's not saccharine, as we are so used to, was shocking but totally fit considering her life and experience up to that point, and how her hair changes at the end meant to me that it had been years - but she was still expecting to see her little sky-puppy and wasn't ready for him to be grown up.

    As great and well-executed as the story is my main criticism is with the hair. If Sintel is supposed to be a redhead she shouldn't have gray in her hair, redheads don't actually "go gray" but it should be a faded red; ie. dark-red/brown would fade to a light-red or strawberry-blonde. It's nice to see the connection with the dragon "Scales" sniffing as the pause almost links them together, nice behavioral detail
