  • It's probably true to say that the GCR's Winter Gala was about one engine, the return after repairs at Loughborough, of Great Western King class no.6023 'King Edward II'. The loco looked resplendant in BR blue livery and it is to be hoped that she will now enjoy a long trouble free period of running. She was joined by visiting GWR 2-8-0 no.3803 from the South Devon Railway and members of the home fleet. I visited the gala on Friday 25th. and Saturday 26th. January 2013 and the following scenes are included in the video;
    6023 'King Edward II' - Charnwood Water, Woodthorpe, Quorn Straight, Quorn and Kinchley Lane (being 'bowled' by 48624!)
    GWR no. 3803 - Charnwood Water, Woodthorpe, Quorn Straight, Quorn and Swithland
    LMS 8F no.48624 - Woodthorpe and Quorn Straight
    SR no.777 'Sir Lamiel' - Quorn and KInchley Lane
    Ivatt Class2 no.46521 - Kinchley Lane
    BR Mogul no.78019 - Quorn Straight, Quorn and Kinchley Lane
    LMS 'Jinty' no.47406 leaving Quorn, north and southbound and Kinchley Lane
    GNR N2 no.1744 - Quorn Straight and KInchley Lane
    Full credit to the railways staff and volunteers for another fine gala especially given the difficult icy conditions of the Friday morning
    Two DVD's available at present - 'The Jacobite - Spring to Autumn' and 'Steam On The Mainline 2008 - 2012' see my website www.acwvideo.co.uk for details

    You have my utmost respect for braving those cold conditions Austin. First time I've visited the GCR since 2009 and couldn't have chosen a better gala to attend. Many thanks for sharing.

    Stunning images of the King Austin, the times I've walked past this at Woodhams with one driving wheel cut away, and look at it now. One thing I notice Austin, is that as a single chimney King, there doesn't seem to be the characteristic bark that I remember.....Thanks for enduring the cold....Bob

    Many thanks Dan, it was great to see the King in action, they seemed to take it easy with her initially but then really opened her up. I was at Swithland when she left Ropley and she sounded superb climbing away from the station and away past me, wished I'd recorded it now

    Great video Austin. King Edward II and Sir Lamiel look superb in BR Blue and Malachite Green respectively, just hope the King stays in blue for a longer period. 3803 looks perfect with the Windcutters and a great home fleet made for a smashing looking gala. Thanks for sharing.

  • @acw71000
    @acw71000  Před 11 lety

    Many thanks David, the GCR are very fortunate to have such a strong home fleet even without the visiting locos. It was wonderful to see the King in action, she looks quite different to 6024 with the full height chimney and safety valve bonnet. There was one tender first shot which I didn't film of her climbing away from Rothley and the noise was something else, wished I'd recorded it now!

  • @acw71000

    Thanks Kris, I agree about the Woodthorpe shot, I was glad to be in that spot ! The first run was understandably tentative but that one, the second, the crew seemed to have come to grips with the strange contraption. You'll have been pleased with the lovely sun/snow combination on Saturday. All in all a great gala and full credit to them considering the difficult conditions

    There is just something about steam and snow scenes that are just amazing,lots of exhaust steam as well in the cold.I really like the shot at the jct with the signals and GWR 3803 coming towards the camera and the other train going away,shame about all the orange vests but we have to put up with that these days.A great video,very well done,I look forward to seeing more video's from you this yearChris.

    This was a bit far away for me to travel Austin, but watching this excellent video is just as good! You were certainly blessed with some fine weather and the lying snow made the background very attractive. The King in blue looked great thanks to the team on the GCR no doubt and gave just a hint of what the large Caledonian Railway large 4-6--0s might have looked like! Thanks for posting this for our enjoyment and well done. Ken

    Thanks very much, the railway did so well and deserve full credit for running such an intensive timetable considering the weather problems. I'd have liked the 8F to be a few moments later for that passing shot but that's just being picky! Many thanks Bob, it was certainly worth braving the cold to see the King back in action. I wonder whether the snow tended to muffle the single chimney bark a little. I've mentioned in other comments about her departure from Rothley tender first when I was at Swithland which I didn't film, and that was very noisy and I'm sorry that I didn't record even just for the sound. It's amazing how big she looked with the full size chimney and safety valve bonnet compared to the cut down versions on 6024.
