    No matter how u slice it restaurants should not charge extra for bread! Unless like u said it was a specialty bread that was well worth it but I guess I am too frugal lol I think it should b complimentary. Idk they have even hiked up the tip percentage starting at 15% to 20% with out my vote on the matter! In Europe and Asia the restaurant owner is the one that pays their servers a good salary so they don't need tips. I think that's something we should adopt here in the U.S. since the prices of everything has gotten out of hand! lol sorry u had a pain in the crack lol otherwise great video and the duck looked scrumptious!

    Hey James!
    I'm really surprised you had never experienced Cassoulet - my all time favorite French dish - I've had so many incredible ones - some wonderful ones there in NYC - including unforgettable versions at Le Grenouille and the legendary La Cote Basque -
    Also one of my most memorable meals anywhere was at a tiny basement bistro in Paris where every Tuesday night they serve Cassoulet and Cassoulet only.
    It comes to the table in a huge ancient Dutch oven that looks like it dates from a grandmother's farm kitchen circa 1900 - I can still smell it's fragrant aroma and taste the depth and richness of the various meats it contained.
    Remarkable.
    And I know it cost nowhere near $54 - and the the loaf of fresh country bread was hefty, hot from the oven and free.

    • @Jamesnu
      @Jamesnu  Před 3 měsíci +1

    Another fine episode, James ! The food looked good . Cassoulet is always a desirable choice on a French restaurant menu . Yes , they don't look after us guys dining alone . It's always a wobbly table , or an uncomfortable chair . When I was married , she didn't want to go out to restaurants . You just can't win ! I hope you get the chance to go to Paris one day and do a food review . You'll love it ! All the best !

    I always find it odd when restaurants sort of ignore the solo diner. They tend to eat more (no one to share with and no one to judge lol) and tip well, at least I do. Everybody paying deserves the same service. I’m glad you enjoyed the food. Curious as to what you think about natural wine.

    I absolutely hate fluorescent lighting and the way it looks, not to mention how it makes me look,lol, what on earth gave them the idea it was chic. Nice cassoulet, I don't know what the green was on there, but thyme some bay leaf and a gentle addition of some nutmeg would have added just a bit more flavor. The mousse looked rich and tasty.

    James: being an affionato of cassoulet their version looks great with the lamb! Yes, that Restaurant Week $60 deal was outstanding! $11 for bread, no way! I'm not a fool! In Miami, we also have a restaurant week which gives you a chance to try some spots you would not normally try! As a side comment, in France most restaurants offer a set menu for lunch & dinner, usually 2-4 courses at a good price! Unfortunately most French restaurants in the USA do not offer this type of set menu! Any thoughts? It seems that off-the-menu at Frenchette a three course meal, without wine, tip or tax, is $100+😊

    • @Jamesnu
      @Jamesnu  Před 3 měsíci

      Indeed! That was a great cassoulet! Yeah, I do like a good prix fixe menu and I loved going out to restaurants during my multiple visits to France. I'm glad a number of cities have Restaurant Weeks as it does make certain restaurants more affordable. Because like I said in the video, it was normally a pretty costly place.

    Interesting you mentioned that your main course was served “piping hot”. In the last few years, my wife and i find that even the best restaurants serve so many meals that come out luke warm or cold. While we dont want to be complainers, we have become more assertive at sending such meals back, especially if michelin star or just expensive.
