Would you start a CZcams channel? So yes, what will it be about?
Filmmaking and Photography but in my home language, Afrikaans, because no one does it 😀
Nice down to earth wrap up of the realities :) As for starting a channel, yeah, and I just did, a little over three weeks ago, working on my third video now, partly thanks to you and your videos (and of course other creatives on youtube, not gonna lie) but your videos have been part of what got me started - as for what it’s about? It’s the «I want to make videos to promote my roller skate shop in Norway through tutorials/how to’s and product videos and need to learn videography and stuff but I only have an iPhone X and no budget so I’m building all the gear I can (like my DIY full size softbox/keylight with a stand) and document *that* journey to see how far I can get with «what I have» and what I can build/hack together spending as little money as possible»-segment of videos, a little bit niche, but hopefully helpfull fro someone down the line that want to make videos but don’t have a budget or fancy gear :) Thanks for all your inspirational content, looking forward to what comes next from you :)
Very happy I started mine a year ago. It’s leading to opportunities that I wouldn’t have thought of. Stoked to see where it goes.

Thanks for the video, its very informative and it's great to see someone being this transparent. I've been thinking of starting my own CZcams channel and just like you, I'm from a non-English speaking country. So I wonder if creating a channel in the native language would reach more companies wanting to work with you - was that a consideration you had before starting?
This can definitely be the case. But depending on your country, it can also limit you. For example, in Holland there is not a massive filmmaking audience.
I mean total over 4 years doesn't sound impressive, but the first 2 years you were building the business from nothing. I wouldn't be surprised if it will be €90k in the next 12 months, probably double that agains the following 12 months - great job, very impressed!
I'm someone much earlier on your journey, I'm starting to get the hang of my little ZV-E1, just working on a video now comparing an old Samyang 18mm F/2.8 to a new copy, surprisingly they are VERY different, the new one being MUCH worse, who knew! - the lens profile corrections seem to do more harm than good with this level of inconsistency.
You're right mate. First two years were very verrrry low on income and the majority of the money came from the last year even. Lets see where this journey takes me, haha.

Dit is echt een video waar je wat aan hebt, en echt open en eerlijk. Top.
Als je nog content zoekt voor een goede video: persoonlijk vind ik het nog best lastig om de juiste autofocusmodi te kiezen voor welke situaties. Volgens mij is er niet zoveel over te vinden op yt. Nu film jij vooral Sony, en ik Lumix (maar wel met PDAF op de S5iiX), maar de basis zal hetzelfde zijn.
Als antwoord op je vraag: Wij hebben een kanaal vooral over musea, vakantielocaties etc maar proberen langszaam toch meer te professionaliseren.

Instructive and realistic, nice, Sjoerd. Sjoerd as Santa - very effective😊. Freelance work from direct YT referrals is one thing, but can you measure the secondary “reputation and income building gigs” that started w/YT referral, if that makes sense? Say, you get a YT direct commercial job (gig A) and then folks who see gig A (perhaps unaware of YT) like the work well enough to hire you for another project, and so on. Reputation tree begets earnings tree. Cheers!

Hi Sjoerd, Ive just checked out your Skillshare content and I'm following you there now. How many hours a day, across 7 days, do you put into your work\craft and do you make time for yourself or are you willingly committing to the time you are giving? In short what's your work\life balance like and are you happy with it?
Good question. At the moment my work life balance is pretty much 8 to 6 for work, then free time at home. I try to me more flexible and 'allow' myself time off as well. Right now working a lot on side projects, not so much on film. But this probably will change :-)

Ads do disappoint. I guess I need to get into finance videos… RPM is 10 times as high haha

So far I’ve made £100 on CZcams, but I do create videos because it helps me to learn and also connect with my small and beautiful audience.

Yes! I still do get a lot of work out of youtube that come with good budgets!

Its only the beginning. My channel perhaps didnt grow that fast. Others do and that comes with a lot more money. Still, money shouldnt be your main focus.. gets very very hard
