My favorite Ableton Live Bugs (still present in Beta 12)

  • This is my way to cope with the frustration, that I have using Ableton Live. I hoped that some of the bugs from version 10 and 11 would be fixed in Live 12, but unfortunately I was too optimistic. In this video I am presenting four bugs, that Ableton needs to address before taking any more of my money.

    The first time I encountered the drum rack filter bug I thought I was losing my mind. I can usually get around it by using an auto filter after the sample, but that really shouldn't be necessary.

    I like Ableton's workflow but the fact it won't host Absynth 5 or allow different tracks to access multiple output MIDI channels from a single VST instrument is ruining the experience. I can throw the kitchen sink at Reaper and it just says, 'no probs'.

    I love Ableton but I am slowly getting tired of crashing and bugs…..I have started transitioning to bitwig studio 5 the stability is insane and a plus is that an Ableton developer that left Ableton is part of the bitwig team so they are building this daw with a strong foundation and have learned from previous mistakes 🙌🏽💪🏼💯

    Thanks for pointing these out. I'm also getting more and more frustrated with Un-Ableton, in my case it's the audio drop outs. Bitwig has a better software architecture, but in my test I soon ran into problems with "pressure" (which sometimes works as Aftertouch, sometimes as Channel Pressure) . Still debating what's the way to go without spending to much time with technical issues.

    I'm very curious about Reaper and Bitwig. I've been stubborn about getting away from Ableton because of Push and some Max for Live stuff that I like. This is a great time for Ableton to be hearing about these bugs, when they still have some time before official release to address them. I would also like to see if the Elizabeth Homeland Valhalla wrapper would make any difference with those plugins, in Live12

    Hallo Martin,
    meine Erfahrung mit dem Support ist eigentlich recht gut. In der 11er Beta sorgten Umlaute im Preset Browser für einen Absturz. Bug gemeldet - zwei Tage später lag die neue Version mit dem gefixten Ergebnis vor. Scheint so, als wären diese Fehler nicht so einfach zu beheben. Aber der Parameter Bug ist echt ärgerlich, besonders beim Parametersprung. Ich arbeite deswegen immer nur mit den Makros und weniger im Plugin UI.

    • @MartinStuertzer
      @MartinStuertzer  Před 7 měsíci +8

      Das sind dann so Workarounds, mit denen man sich irgendwie einrichtet. Ehrlich gesagt sehe ich es als Kunde einer 949 € Hardware und 599 € Software auch nicht als meine Aufgabe an, an der Entwicklung als unbezahlter Beta-Tester mitzuwirken und irgendwelche Bug-Reports zu schreiben. Auf meine Einsendungen war die Reaktion bisher nicht vorhanden.

    What I love in Bitwig is that they implemented very well how the multi-out instruments should behave. Yet in ABL12 you need to create multiple tracks for this.

    also why can't we have the actual parameter value on macro knobs when it's a single param?

    • @MartinStuertzer

      Because the Midi protocol, which was invented in 1983, uses the numbers 1 to 128. This reads like a troll comment, but it is my serious answer to your question.

  • @askondo5
    @askondo5 Před 7 měsíci

    Have you considered reporting the first 2 issues? If they are easy to reproduce there is also a high chance to fix them. The earlier the better.
    For the latter two I have to say this is a misunderstanding of functionality.
    I'd recommend to at least read the manual and/or the respective info texts in Live.
    The plugin configuration preset only saves the configuration, i.e. not the parameter values, but instead which parameters of the plugin ui are exposed to Live.
    The last bug I'm really curious about hearing how you technically wanna block the plugin ui from reacting to user input. Because when macro mapping a parameter in a rack what else would you do to handle the situation of having the same representation of a parameter? Especially if you change the parameter range for the macro?

    • @MartinStuertzer
      @MartinStuertzer  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Hello. Yes, the first two issues are reported, long time ago.
      Regarding the other two matters: I am a user, not a developer. It does not help me at all, that Ableton has an information in the manual, that it does not work. It works in Bitwig and it works in Logic, so what holds Ableton back to solve that?
      I understand the macro problem. You asked, how I would like to have it solved in Ableton. My answer: Like Arturia did it in Pigments, or Serum, or Massive. The three synths have macro knobs and it is still possible to change the parameter from "both sides" without breaking the user experience.

  • @iqnill
    @iqnill Před 7 měsíci +1

    It seems like Live is getting close to its "use by" date.
    To keep it alive it needs a re-coding from ground up. Introduce proper file management, search, optimise for modern CPUs etc. So far Ableton just keep adding gimmick (as long as they are easy on the CPU) and ignore the underlying issue of being a very old software.
    Ableton is not the only company doing it of course, a few spring to mind...
    They are obviously scared of the backlash, which keeps tem in a rut. Only time will tell how it all works out for hem.

    • @MartinStuertzer
      @MartinStuertzer  Před 7 měsíci +2

      That is a fair point. To me it seems like Ableton was "done" (in a good way) with version 8 or 9. In order to sell upgrades they introduced more features, which made the whole program difficult to maintain and to handle. A re-boot, like Logic or Cubase did, would be a good idea.

      @iqnill Před 7 měsíci

      Reboot like Bitwig would be the best IMHO.
      Even in 12 they haven't ironed out bugs from previous versions and added MIDI tool, which is the only thing that can be added as they are a low-CPU tools.

    For the price ableton asks it really should be (almost) bug free...why I will NOT invest in such a program where such bugs exists over multiple versions. For some it may work to play with such an app, for me bug fixes is an issue that has to be fixed.
    and I know Bitwig has some bugs too that aren't adressed or fixed in updates (yes I do own Bitwig)

  • @fruchticaramelos9013
