    After you put sodium silicate on it, if you coat it with a ceramic clay like itc100ht or satinite, you probably won’t have to replace your wool and it’s easy to patch and much much safer for your lungs.

    What is this material made out of that it can stand up to the heat? How hard or easy is it to cut? What is the brand of of the adhesive? Is that black stuff lining the 2nd furnace additional product or just char?

    • @anotherrant6688
      @anotherrant6688 Před 2 lety

      I've worked with kaowool before. We get it at our local fireplace store. It comes in roles with different thicknesses. I use a mask and gloves while handling it because of the fibers. It's super easy to cut with scissors. I think the black stuff is just accumulated splatter from the smelts. I also use a respirator when I'm smelting but that's just me.

    • @anotherrant6688
      @anotherrant6688 Před 2 lety

      Also, this stuff is the best. It holds the heat in like crazy and as he said, you can easily patch any holes, etc.

    Cant glass go airborne and be bad for your lungs by firing wool without hardening it?

    • @mbmmllc
      @mbmmllc  Před 4 lety +6

      Yes, I always wear a respirator. Everyone seems to comment on the glass fibers, but I think they are not the worst thing coming off a smelting furnace. There is also SOx that turns to sulfuric acid in your lungs, heavy metals (Pb, As, etc), caustic fumes from soda ash/NaOH. So yes the ceramic fibers are bad, but there is other stuff too that I am more worried about. Always wear a respirator, not just a dust mask.
