- We enjoyed our first anchorage in the Bahamas and got a little bit of rest to continue our journey towards Haiti. on the way, we had some issues with squeaky, stopped at another anchorage, and found a gorgeous free diving spot.

Every goal and success I have ever dreamed up is lacking compared to your lives. Now I'm Binging Uma.
Just wanted to say what an inspiration you guys are to me. We have a Seawind 1160 catamaran ("Unstoppable") that we had built for us and it was first launched in Nov 2015. At that time we were living in Melbourne Australia and the plan was to sail up the east coast of Australia and base ourselves in The Whitsundays, explore the Great Barrier Reef for a while before taking off for the Pacific Islands to the east, and then the rest of the world! I really only developed a passion for sailing late in life at 62 (aviation was my previous passion) Everyone said "you can't do that" at your age, but I'm a very young 62 and I did, and my partner Miranda and I kicked off our adventure. However we've been sidelined for the last 12 months in Brisbane only half way up Australia's east coast when I was diagnosed with cancer last August. The point I am making is that watching your videos EVERY DAY (started at the beginning once I discovered you) keeps me motivated and positive about beating this illness so we can do what you are doing. I was told I would not live past Christmas 2016, but I responded well to the treatment and this has slowed down it's progress . Now as I type this, we are at the beginning of one month in China to undergo some hopefully lifesaving advanced hi-tech cancer treatment not available in Australia, USA etc. Like you, I am a problem solver and simply see this as my next adventure, my next challenge to be overcome. Looking forward to watching the remainder of your videos and catching up to real time. You are touching the lives of so many people in such a positive way. Well done and keep up the great work. Spare parts are essential. I make sure we have three of everything. But even that didn't help when our auto pilot went out between the Azores and Lagos, Portugal. We had to get new parts from the maker.

As a temporary patch to complete the passage, I might have considered sewing the belt together. Of course, monday morning quarterbacking accomplishes little. Thank you for another great episode!

I think you guys would benefit from reading "Sail Power" by Wallace Ross. The thing that motivates me to say this is what I'm seeing you guys do with the traveler. The traveler was invented to allow you to alter the main's angle of attack without altering leech tension. Whereas, loosening or tightening the sheet alters both angle of attack and leech tension (i.e. belly depth and twist at the top of the sail). Finally, traveler position alters the aft anchor point of the mainsail. Think about these facts for a bit and I'll bet it alters how you employ the traveler. Cheers!

The ones we had on Uma were terrible (one little wiggle and they would break) So we decided to remove them until we find the better option which is to fabricate and install 316 SS rails. But, until we do that, we learn to sail without :)
please consider spare parts for important stuff I just want you all to be safe at all times

If it is of any help, I have owned a Tanzer 22 and a Bayfield 25 (in the 85-90s, yes Im oldish 70 chap), The boats both had lots of teak inside and out....most of it looking gray and black and seemingly ready for garbage after 20+ years of sea water....!
But the local ship chandler here in Quebec suggested to try a thorough cleaning with TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate...real cheap in any hardware store) followed by light sanding then proper varnish. The varnish was done in 15 layers the first 5 or 6 starting at 3% dilution and progressively getting thicker. The teak took on a deep golden caramel color and remained untouched until I sold the boat 5 years later.....!

Hey, there is the solar oven I have been waiting to see. It made baking that bread look so cool and good.
If you can...sheet to tiller never leaves you stranded. And no power needed. Plus plenty of room in the cockpit when the wheel and binnacle is not there.

Another fun episode!! That style of auto pilot seems prone to breaking the belts........or maybe they are so reliable they get forgotten.
They’re pretty much useless unless you’re just motoring in calm conditions. It’s not powerful enough to cope with the pressure of sailing.

Autopilots break. All of them. Windvanes, properly maintained, can be reliable...but I've never seen an autopilot that really stands up to offshore use long term unless you spend thousands and thousands.
It seems that alternative autopilot equipment is necessary. A wind vane system is in order. Hopping around the Bahamas is one thing. Crossing an ocean is another. Way out there you need this critical device...and a good one not something thrown together on a shoe string. Save up and don't cross without one.
Those autopilots suck. I had one a few years ago on a boat I brought. It did nothing but make weird noises and wander where it wanted.

I saw a boat with their propane bottles stowed in a pvc pipe with scewed on closed ends. It was stowed outside. Very cool

Awesome, I know you know this already, but propane is outrageously dangerous inside the boat or in a locker, unless it is vented properley outside the hull. its heavier than air and collects in the bulge, so keeping hatches or windows open does nothing. Be careful. Cheers and Carry on.
I don't know if your autopilot has an adjustment in software for hysterisis or "dead band" but yours seems to be making tiny adjustments all of the time, which really wears anything out. If the dead band can be increased, the control will wait until you deviate a larger amount from course (it would run at a particular rudder position for longer) before making an adjustment. That might extend the life by a factor of 2x or 3x.....
Custercounty01 these particular units have very poor adjustment of that parameter. we eventually just replaced ours.
Get some life lines on that vessel, at least for now you can fit a line from stern rail to the shrouds , about 4 feet or so then to the bow rail. Great Vid M8s. "Rubber Band Broke....Awww." uh, two bungie cords 1 to port 1 to starboard, or lash the wheel? Or, trim and glue the old belt. if it down work whatcha got ta lose? But in the Time of the cavemen, before those things call Auto pilots, they used to set a course and lash the wheel Worked for Capt. Slocum on his solo circumnavigation back in the 1800's F.W.F.S. M8s.

Ok this may be a dumb question, what is the item hanging from the boom at 7;03? I have seen it in many of your videos, but never seen one anywhere else. I don't know if it is equipment or what. Awesome series guys, I'm always eager for next episode. fair winds
its called a boom brake... a type of gybe preventer. Google Boom Brake to see what it is and how it works.

try mixing ingredients on a one gallon freezer ziplock bag... and by the way to my own personal view that autopilot looks to flimsy. Woldnt bet my life on thin drivebelts. just a thought...
Maybe you can try to rig sheet or boom to helm steering next time you travel a long distance when auto pilot fails. At least try as a backup.

I was wondering about your autopilot. From other videos they seem to break a lot, especially the electric ones, and you guys have barely even mentioned yours.
It SUCKS! But, we find little value in complaining about things we can't change and have therefore been hand steering most of the time. We will however be upgrading to a windvane soon enough. We've heard much better reviews of hydraulic pilot rams. But they're quite far out of our current price range, so it will just have to wait. In the mean time, we'll keep sailing. ;)

Fish, onions....what ever else you want, soaked in fresh lime juice. The juice "cooks" the fish, so eat it right away before the fish gets too cooked and turn a little chewy.
Could you not have sewn the drive belt back together, if only as a temporary fix?
Did you just use a dry measure cup to measure liquid?

Is there any risk from parasites eating blue water fish raw (civiche) or just very lightly seared? Or do you just look at the flesh and see if it looks good?
Elsewhere I've heard it said that sashimi grade fish is only safe because it has been flash frozen.
Don't ever waste money on an above deck pilot for any serious long distance sailing. Been there... Done that. Learned the hard way. Definitely a piece of equipment that should be oversized for long distance sailing.

if man makes it nature can break it this spare parts were invented you can never enough spare parts but there is never enough to store them.. " i have a really good axe I have replaced the head several times and the handle but still a good axe..
