    Super ripe bananas are a must for decent banana bread! My store bought bananas that ripen get frozen specifically for my banana bread.

    Green bananas are delicious in escabeche! And defrosted bananas make great banana bread or muffins.

    Wow yeah I did not know that about you. My son is nonverbal autistic and does therapy too. He loved bananas when he was little but he got burnt out on them. my daughter loves them. I am in 9b florida and am considering getting some in the ground in spring...and plantains too maybe

      🥰 to you and your family. You should definitely put some bananas in. Super easy once they are established.

    Beautiful bird song at the beginning. Love the butterflies. I am the one who buys the green bananas at teh grocery store. Lol Thanks for the tips. Are you going to try to grow the ice cream bananas? Maybe your sons would like those right off the tree! Lol.

    I notice you open the bananas from the stem end. Have you ever tried opening them from the flower end? I saw a video once talking about how chimps open it that way so I had to try it. It was a game changer. I'm never going back. You just pinch the flower end and if it's ripe it will naturally split open for an easy peel. No more snapping the top off or smushing an over ripe banana. Hope this life hack helps someone. I'm new to your channel and love your videos! This is my first year gardening and you have been very helpful. Sending love from Central Florida. ❤️

      @WildFloridian  Před 2 lety +2

      I do it both ways 🤪 Whichever way the banana wants to open. 😄 I'm so glad the channel is helping you 🥰 Best wishes 🌺🦋🌸

  • @danielleburchette2599

    Yeah. I find that strawberry and tomatoes as well as sweet potatoes tend to taste better fresh from the garden. I won't turn down a grocery store tomato, but I'd rather have home grown anyway. Lol. That was a whole lot of banana's. 😲

    Good morning, I have a small banana tree growing for the first time here in Pasco, not sure of the variety, can't wait to see when it flowers and the first fruits come it, so exciting, I never knew that the home grown bananas do not get yellow when they are ripe, kind of makes you wonder what are they doing to the store bought ones, right, have a great weekend!!

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  Před 2 lety +1

      Some home grown ones will yellow (mine don't), they just don't tend to look exactly like the store bought. I'm excited for you and your banana plant!

    Where did you get the reusable bags?!?! They look great!! Mine have a regular snap on top and are shaped like a regular ziplock bag, so they don’t hold much. 😒

  • @samelita007
    @samelita007 Před 2 lety +1

    So how do you compost? I tried using the buried bag method, but I ended up burning tree roots

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  Před 2 lety +1

      I use a basic compost bin (city of St. Pete is giving them to homeowners to use). I don't worry about the mix because it allows for vermi-composting. I let the maggots get in and dump shredded paper on their every couple of weeks. This one on Amazon is the one that is the most similar to what I have amzn.to/30zddZv .

    Watched my first bananas this year for 5 months. They started getting black spots, then the tree fell over so I cut and hung them in the house for a week. The black spots got worse so I cut one open and it was a little dry and smelled like cucumber. I just threw them under the tree. The second tree started producing last month but we will have frost before they are ready🥲

      You can us them green as vegetable instead of fruit. I’m from Honduras and we peeled them and cut them into thin slices then dip fry them and add salt right away. Also put them in soups but bigger size and have to put in warm water and kind of scrub each other to remove a milky sap they have that makes them dark/oxidized and also stains your hands and clothes so put some oil in your hands. It doesn’t have much flavor but when put in broth/sauce it absorbed some of it. LOOK FOR TAJADAS CON POLLO FRITO HONDURAS= FRIED GREEN BANANAS WITH FRIED CHICKEN, IS TOPPED WITH A CABBAGE SALAD AND SAUCE OVER IT. Indian cook with green bananas too😉😁

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  Před 2 lety +2

      They will overwinter if it doesn't get too cold. Were your black spots near the tip of the banana? Or were they in another spot? It sounds like they didn't ripen on the tree enough.

    • @tammystoddard2830
      @tammystoddard2830 Před 2 lety +1

      UPDATE! They had black spots all over and were still hard. The black spots started before I took them off the tree. I hung them in the bathroom for a week and they just got more black spots. I gave up and threw them under the plants to feed the others. In a few days they started ripening! They are mostly black and still a bit firm but taste good. I’m sure you are right and didn’t leave them on long enough. Thank you!

    So, I’m in Central Texas, zone 8b. I recently bought a dwarf Cavendish (had three small pups!) and put it in the ground, besides a couple “unnamed” bananas in the ground for a couple years but have never flowered. I’ll admit, I’ve been a bad banana mom not fertilizing enough other than mulching and compost, banana peels, etc. So all that to say, is there a way once my plants put out a flower to keep it viable until it gets a rack! We may, or may not get some cold in January or February but it’s not bad. Except February before last we had a freak ice and snow storm and lost all my Hardy palms. Locals said it was extremely unusual as there are palms around about 30-40 feet tall. Is it hopeless for me to get fruit?

    I wrote you back in mid July that I got my first banana flower. Well it is now almost the end of November, Happy Thanksgiving!, and the bananas are a nice size, but they're not turning yellow yet and the plant itself looks like it is leaning over and the bark looks like it is getting old and tired. The bananas are not Squarish anymore but they're still quite firm. Do you think they will be turning yellow soon, my concern is that we already had 39 degrees here and so far it is OK. Do I leave them on the plant till one turns yellow and then cut the whole thing off to ripen in the house or do I do it now and would it ripen by itself in the house. It is a dwarf Cavendish and there is one more huge pup (looks larger than the mother already) and there is a medium one attached and a little tiny baby that I think I will cut and pot till spring. I could just leave the bananas on the plant and when I hear a frost is coming g I could wrap the bananas in a blanket so they don't get frozen. I also n ever cut the long thingie on the bottom which was the flower petal at one time. Could you kindly give me some advice on what to do. Thanks much,
    Ellen, Florida Gardener, zone 9a

      If they have lost the ridges... you can harvest and they will ripen inside. If you want to test... just take a few and see how they do. But more than likely... I would pull the whole bunch.
