  • A simple technique from George Silver's manual Brief Instructions on my Paradoxes of Defence.
    Matt attacks from Open Ward to my upper left, I ward the blow guardant counter cut to the arm, and fly out.

    After watching this video, I think I FINALLY understand the difference between "distance" and "place". Took me long enough...

      Matt and I have been mates for something like 15 years. He's certainly pretty handy with a sword!

    Please separate your videos into more play lists. Eg backswrod being one, pugilism being one, and discussions as one. Just starting to watch your channel as of yesterday, and finding it enjoyable. Good job.

    Really excited to see some more videos posted on this channel. Looking at getting myself something to function as a practice backsword soon.
    I've been reading your Silver transcriptions, and also studying a bit of the book "Lessons on the English Longsword." I don't necessarily agree with everything the authors posit,(though some things I certainly do) but their transcriptions of the Middle English manuscripts are at the very least a really fascinating look at what was most likely some small bit of the tradition from which Silver was working when he developed his system.
    One thing I immediately notice is that Silver's backsword is much more cautious than most systems, or perhaps any other system I've read or studied so far, really. When he talks about how he is teaching defense rather than offense, and I look at his opinions, particularly on place and distance, I feel like I really am looking at a completely different idea of the purpose of the sword. It's also very eye-opening to see such a negative attitude towards duels expressed in a combat manual of the period.
    But there I go talking too much again. Looking forward to more videos!

    Thanks for the great instructions. I do not yet own a backsword but I do have a sidesword. It would be very interesting to me if you could do a video about the similarities and differences between the two and if backsword techniques can be applied to the sidesword. For example; does the full, back edge of the sidesword create a hazard to the user in certain backsword guard positions? Does either blade pair well with a buckler or dagger? Thank you again for the cool videos!

    I'm curious. What are your thoughts on Roland Warzecha's interpretation of fighting in "true times"? (He's made a video on that)

    I am glad to see the collaboration!
    In the video, it looks as if Matt’s attack is pointless as your sword is already in the way of it. I suppose that just due to the angle of the shot?

  • @ryanhojun

    Any idea where to get a backsword that has the same quality as Albion swords?

  • @levifontaine8186
    @levifontaine8186 Před 6 lety

    Very interesting, but I have one question. It seems that if you are already guarding your head, why would he attack it? Are you meant to change to that guard to protect your unguarded head, or is he trying to power through the guard, as I've heard Sliver mentioned.

    so what is the weight of these swords? How does this weight comparesd to real swords, I have impression that these practice swords have some 600 grames or less..

  • @Strategiusz
    @Strategiusz Před 9 lety

    So an attacker usually attacks in a false time and a defender in a true time?
    Is that means the defender has an advantage?

    • @remaint3282
      @remaint3282 Před 9 lety +2

      Rather, the defender forces the attacker to attack in a false time. The defender does this by remaining out of distance, forcing the attacker to take a step to be in reach.

    • @EnglishMartialArts
      @EnglishMartialArts  Před 9 lety

      Enoch Tuong Absolutely. Fighting as the patient is the simplest way to utilise True Times, but it is perfectly possible to attack using them, it just needs a bit of a rethink from the standard methods used in single hand swordplay.

    •  Před 9 lety

      EnglishMartialArts As my instructor says: you can't decide to attack first, but you can decide to attack last.

  • @EnglishMartialArts
    @EnglishMartialArts  Před 9 lety +1

    Bastian, I've got a hug amoutn fo respect for Roland as a swordsman, but to the best of my knowledge he tends to stick to the interpretation of true times that says it is eseentially the same as other contemporary systems.
    I disagree with this premise, and not only does Silver tell us that what he is describing is different from other contemporary systems, but also what he describes throughout his manuals is demonstrably different. There is one section that when taken in isolation can be said to sound as it if is the same, but there are big problems with taking small sections of a source and extrapolating to the entire system.
    This is a nice article that looks at the different opinions.

      My comments don't seem to pass moderation so I'm trying again replying to a comment:
      Thanks for showing this technique.
      The technique isn't strictly Silver, though, is it?
      I mean that Silver says that if you're in True Guardant to:
      "let your gathering be always in your fight to ward his right side so
      shall you with your sword choke up any blow that he can make at you,
      from the which ward you may strike him on the right or left side of the
      head, or thrust him in the body."
      The technique that you show is obvious and effective but seems to be
      against Silver's directions for facing Guardant or Open fights from
      Guardant. You're gathering to your opponent's left, warding guardant
      and cutting the arm.- Good martial skill and sound. I can't see Silver
      saying it though.
      Can you expand on this please?
      Thanks

    Your body movements are condescending. Do exercises that people can do by themselves.
