      @@sleetygrub8777 The polyurethane itself was advertised as having some sort of added water resistance to it (I didn't add anything to the polyurethane sealer). But as I explained in the video I did a lot more than that to seal the walls/floor from water using the foam, drylok etc. There's timestamps in the description where you can find how I described that process in this long video

    I don’t usually comment but just wanted to congratulate you on a fantastic build. So cool that you have a professional looking display that you can say you made entirely by yourself. There are so few examples of large scale naturalistic vivariums. I will definitely be referencing back to this one when I build my own someday. Well done sir 👍

    I'm currently planning a build for my Veiled Chameleon and I wish there were more videos of builds like this. I've probably watched most if not all of the ones out there at this point and it's pretty disappointing. I will be taking a lot of inspiration from this build. If I had the ability financially I would probably do it like this, but with a Veiled Cham in mind, so less glass, more screen and vents.

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video! So much good info. Two things I'm definitely going to do on my big build, using wheels, and the foam pvc sheets. The pvc seems so much cleaner than just using spray foam, which can be full of holes and oddities.
    Reptiles are some of the coolest animals on the planet, and they deserve a home that is enriching, and looks great. Great works!

    • @SpectrumVivaria
      @SpectrumVivaria  Před 4 lety

      Yeah you can't get the same detail from expanding foam a lone as apposed to XPS insulation sheets. But the expanding foam/xps combo really works well together. Adhering the sheets together with the expanding and being able to fill the small gaps with it works wonders.

These videos were super helpful! I'll be building it as 2 x 1.2m vivarium that join in the middle, so I can split them for easier transportation later when house renovations start :D

    I've been researching and building for the the last five years and keeping reptile for the last 10 years. This is easily top 3 I've seen. It speaking to eye and very functional. Only think I like and dislike are they doors. I like that it's ventilated but I like to drop live insects and would feel like they could escape through the small gaps. But I see that you have those cups so it works for you perfectly. Again man, beautiful enclosure.

    • @SpectrumVivaria
      @SpectrumVivaria  Před 4 lety

      Yeah the door choice has pros and cons, just as other types would have too. I mostly do target feeding with forceps for insects that can escape through the glass gaps or I use the food cups. Other insects such as grasshoppers are fine to just throw in and let the lizards catch them.
      Something I have done however is using some clear tubing I cut a slit down the entire length of it and slip it onto the edge of the glass door. This stops insects being able to get out and is an option if I feel the need to close up some ventilation too!

  • @cutiedudie2002
    @cutiedudie2002 Před 3 lety +1

    This is awesome! I came for advice on the glass door. My orchid terrarium / living wall has a front of 4ftx18in, and I only want a single pane, so no sliding doors for me. The glass guys said I'd need a frame for the glass. I was originally thinking it could be a glass-only door like a shower door, but they thought that'd be too heavy. I am okay without a door on it for now, but if I did get a door I could keep some cool insects in there or something and keep the humidity even higher. I do have a computer fan mounted in for air circulation which of course I'd block off access to with mesh if I did put animals in it.
    I am spraying it down once/twice a day with a pump sprayer which is working for me so far. I used a humidifier in front of it, but made sure to point it away so I don't get the minerals from the water on the plants. I'd be worried about using an auto mister with rain water - I'd probably have to filter it first so it didn't clog the system, and I'm not sure what I would be supposed to use. Even a humidifier with rain water I think could get gross over time. Any tips on that?

    • @SpectrumVivaria
      @SpectrumVivaria  Před 3 lety

      Aesthetically I understand why you want the single glass pane. I think it is possible as long as the terrarium/glass door is secured to the wall correctly to support the weight both when closed and opened fully (so it doesn’t tip forward). I haven’t tried it before so I don’t have specific advice but I like the idea. I think you should try google some images of what you want/think could work and take those to the glass guys.
      And for the misting/humidifier system what you want to do is get a Reverse Osmosis filter. A 3 stage RO system is plenty for this purpose and is what I use for my humidifier and misting equipment. No clogs/problems after years of daily usage. They’re a good investment.

      The wall is still great and undamaged from the lizards. If you are going to make something for a larger iguana species (I'm assuming green?) - Then I would probably use a stronger method like concrete or epoxy.

    Dude I love your tutorial! My daughters and I have started replicating your vivarium. We just finished building the nesting boxes and are getting ready to add the XPS Foam. We want to add a waterfall system but I'm having trouble visualizing it. Any tips or ideas?? Thanks in advance!

      I thought about having a waterfall in my set up as well but decided against it for a number of reasons. I would first consider if you really need/want it as they can be problematic if not done correctly. There's a lot of things to be thinking about if you're making one but as I mentioned sometimes you just need to give things a try and learn for yourself. I'll try give you some quick tips though
      - Make sure your pump is accessible for maintaining/replacing it
      - That the pumps output can be regulated either itself or with a vale in the hose
      -When sculpting the foam you need to be thinking about how the water will flow (the path of least resistance) and you want to control and make sure the water will stay within the intended area. You need a pool at the bottom of it that is deep enough for the pump to be submerged (unless you're using an external pump).
      - If you are replicating my build with the nest boxes hidden in the walls, don't do the waterfall anywhere near these
      Hope that helps, if you like when you're done you can show me on instagram (@spectrumvivaria) I'm curious to see your results!

    Words cannot express how grateful I am for this video. I have a 4' tall, 2' deep, and 4' wide enclosure for my boa and all the information I can find is for smaller vivarium. I have been trying to figure out the lighting for a minute now without having to break my bank and it's cool to see that you have found a setup that sustains your live plants. Is it the HID lights that provide the lighting for the plants? I know there are lights specifically designed for plants like Arcadia Jungle Dawn but most lights like these are made for smaller vivariums again and I always assumed that I would have to break my bank in order to get the appropriate wattage for my plants but I have been looking at getting a Mega Ray anyways so if I can just get away w that as well as some other supplemental heat source if needed? Reptile Jesus or reptile GOD?!

    • @SpectrumVivaria
      @SpectrumVivaria  Před 3 lety

      Lighting taller vivariums does get tricky but something to keep in mind is that the plants in this vivarium don't really need strong light to do well. They are house plants generally so being under HID's is a lot more than what they get in peoples living rooms etc.The HID lights weren't chosen because of their plant growth potential, they are purely for the animals benefit. But as their colour temp is 5000k (white/blue) they are much more beneficial to plants than halogens or incandescent lamps that are 3000k (yellow). HID's are strong UV lamps so generally I have used them only for monitors, dragons and other species that require higher levels. It could be possible to use them in tandem with halogens and other sources of heat/light for a boa. You just need to take care to set them up correctly by not using too high a wattage or having the bulbs too close thereby exposing the animals to dangerous UV levels. Having the lamps go through a mesh screen like a false roof or bulb cage that has mesh will reduce the output of UV and help it be a bit more safer too.

      I don’t know of any alternative products that are the same as Drylok - But there are other methods you could use to seal/create the wall like tile grout, quickset cement, epoxy etc. I’ll be posting more videos in future showing different methods that can be used. But until then there’s a few aussie creators who have videos already that might help e.g. coops reptiles, Beaches scaly beasts.

    I'm currently working on a 75 gal enclosure for my bearded dragon, I have it all carved out but I'm worried about the xps foam getting too hot from the lamps. Is it alright to have the foam in heat as a basking spot or should I use something else? Any tips/advice would be highly appreciated, thanks.

    • @SpectrumVivaria
      @SpectrumVivaria  Před 3 lety +1

      Are you intending to seal the foam with Drylok like I did here? If so than the answer is yes you can create a basking site with this method. You should do many coats of the drylok to really insure that the foam is completely sealed and that it will be durable enough for wear and tear, cleaning etc. I would also suggest if you have areas that you are intending to be a basking spot than go ahead and add extra coats of the drylok to those zones (I did this here too).
      As with any basking site you will need to test what works in terms of the lamp type/number of lamps, distance from lamps to the basking surface etc. to see what is appropriate for the species you are keeping. The drylok surface if done as I described does warm up a lot, but if you have done enough coats than the foam underneath is unaffected.
      Also if you do this be sure to allow the drylok to fully cure/gas off. To do this the drylok needs to be exposed to the warmer temperatures so turn on those basking/heat lamps for some time before adding any animals. This can take up to 2 weeks or so depending on how many layers you did.

    Do you have any tips on moving something like this if you have to move into a new house/apartment?

    • @SpectrumVivaria
      @SpectrumVivaria  Před 2 lety +1

      1. Install wheels on the bottom so it can be moved easily. Or a short stand with wheels that it can sit on. Use castors/wheels that are rated for more weight than you expect the entire enclosure to weigh to be sure they won't fail.
      2. Measure all doorways/entrances to be sure you can move it out when the time comes before you build it. Also measure these for a new place you're thinking of moving into to be sure you can get it in there!
      3. Build something that can be dissassembled/reassembled without destroying it. This might give some limitations/challenges but not impossible!

      Unfortunately I don't think this is a good idea for a number of reasons. When you are doing a big vivarium build like this you really need to put the required time into designing the enclosure to fit your specific needs and the needs of the species to be kept. It is best to draw inspiration, ideas and adapt some of the methods I used for your own special build if you like! The videos so far are not really supposed to be a step by step tutorial - But to inspire and hopefully give some good advice :)

  • @mucusman7511
    @mucusman7511 Před 4 lety

    I mean with some more plants it would truly be a great vivarium, although I absolutely despise the "vines" i would have used actual branches and logs but it's your taste I guess.
    Also would have made it bioactive to eliminate any spot cleaning.

    • @SpectrumVivaria
      @SpectrumVivaria  Před 4 lety +1

      More plants could make this set up look “better” - But then it would not be functional as a vivarium for Tree monitors. They are highly active lizards and plant choice is limited because of this. I was not going to sacrifice climbing space in the form of ledges etc. for planted areas that the lizards would certainly destroy in no time anyway.
      If this was a vivarium for dart frogs, geckos or other small species then this vivarium would be completely different in terms of planting and overall aesthetics. The priority is giving them what they need and what will work in the setup, aesthetics are secondary.
      I discussed my reasoning for the vines and their advantage here in this set up over branches/logs so I won’t explain that again. You’re entitled to your opinion on the aesthetics of them though. It was very experimental and I made a number of them (last ones looking the best, but am using all of them in the vivarium).
      Again this was covered in the video but the setup is bioactive. The problem is when you have a set up that is 6ft tall with ledges/platforms and are keeping active arboreal animals they are naturally going to spend a lot of time in the upper areas. Because of this it means that they poop up there a lot too. There is no way that the clean-up crew is going to scale 4ft+ and take care of it adequately. A combination of cleaning the upper walls manually and having a bioactive substrate for waste that does fall down is what works best here.

    • @mucusman7511

      @@SpectrumVivaria ok thanks for clearing the whole bioactive thing up that makes alot of sense, I keep multiple vivariums of multiple sizes and have great knowledge on the subject so if you do happen to have any questions feel free to ask. Also even though the monitors would tear up small plants I feel a pothos vine coming from one of the top corners would look great and work well I have one in my emerald tree boas vivarium (as you know not a small animal) and it works great very fast grower and quite hardy. And if it gets too big taking up to much space you can always trim it.
