The Other Side of Megaton Rainfall | A Lonely Space Trip [Retrospective]

  • Megaton Rainfall is essentially a Superman-sim turned Space-Explorathon, albeit one that sends chills down my spines at certain points. Whether or not it's worth playing on PC depends on whether or not Solar Systems arouse you, even if it's just on a flat-screen.
    If you're interested in playing it in VR, just go for it. I'd probably get a heart attack but that's not stopping me from going on a space trip all by my lonesome.

    I also get that feeling when playing any game that allows you to explore space and planets far out of our solar system.
    I think the two main things that makes the whole experience scary in a way is the loneliness and the fear of the unknown.
    I definitely get the most scared when I see a blackhole close up in a game. Just a huge *pitch black* hole in the universe that defies the laws of physics, seeing light being distorted around it more and more as you get closer. And if you go in, you will never get out.

It was such an odd happy feeling to be able to go out in the stars, I had fear from a dream I had that I would get lost out in space and not be able to find my way back, my heart dropped when I got above earth, I played on psvr first time playing this game and the thought of the massive emptyness that was behind me as I looked down on Earth it humbled me I think. It would make sense, but time dilation doesn't only happen at or past the event horizon. It happens in any gravitational field, the stronger the gravity, the more pronounced the effect. Thus, when he gets close to the hole, a lot of time has already passed on Earth (decades at least, depending on how close we're talking) and it should have the same consequences without needing to enter it.

  • @jeffreyjohnsonakashadowolf5562

    Alright let’s just try to get this straight ok? Because the whole game kinda creeps me out in a way… I don’t know how to explain it but anyways I got two questions for this game because I’m having a hard time on whether or not I should play this game. I mean I would love to play it simply because I’d like to fight aliens and fly freely in space. But my questions are...
    1. Does the game actually tell you that immortality doesn’t really exist in reality because of the fact that this "immoral superhero" is not black hole proof (because I believe in immortality)?
    2. Do the 15 "signs" actually tell you what the meaning of life is (not that I wanna know because well obviously we don’t know)?
    I mean we all may not know what the meaning of life is but still I mean this game really makes you think including me. So… what is this game really?

    • @RawAustin
      @RawAustin  Před 5 lety +16

      1. With current advancements in science, we still don't fully _get_ how black holes work. Put simply, the easiest solution for this in-game was to just kill the player on approach instead. There is no other way to really off yourself, so within the bounds of conventional physics, you are indeed immortal.
      2. The signs build up to an explanation of what reality is and the meaning of life based on the developers own paradigms. Within the context of this game's self-contained universe, it does explain it, and it does make sense as a fictional work.

      @Hallelujah3r Před 5 lety +6

      Think of black holes in this way...
      They're data deleters. They erase matter/data completely. So yes an immortal wouldn't stand next to a black hole.
      Or would they? Because you would think an immortal as a spirit entity, not as physical flesh. But a different type of matter.
      But they are still matter....

    I think that odd loneliness and even fear is why I play Elite: Dangerous exclusively in VR. Sure, playing it on the Monitor is fun, and in Open it's surprisingly busy, but the moment your brain forgets it's not sitting in your room in front of a computer and the sound of your home's AC blends with the sound of the Atmo-System in your ship, you feel really alone. Even as your screaming across a star system at a fraction/multiple of the speed of light, you get a small ping of fear because you're light years from home. Everywhere you look there is just emptiness. Sure there are planets to land on, missions to run, but for me the best part is between all that. Sometimes it's best to just turn the motors off and exist.

      I've only ever tried Elite: Dangerous VR at a tech demo and the few minutes I spent with it tapped into both the existential dread and calmness that Megaton Rainfall did.
      Your description perfectly encapsulates the experience I had with it.

    • @RawAustin
      @RawAustin  Před 5 lety +1

      Far from it. Plenty of criticisms could be levied at it. The point of the video was to simply talk about a very distinct, niche experience that only this game can provide. That's the whole point of niche games; they're focused experiences that target a subset of people who'll love the shit out of them. It's why games like Arma III aren't mainstream and have a moderately-sized, but very loyal and engaged fanbase.

      @@RawAustin okay so I’m playing it now, and I’m pretty used to VR games, I’ve had my psvr for almost 2 years and have an oculus, it’s a great game, although it’s not as eerie as you led it on to be, that could just be my experience with VR, I don’t know. I’m a little upset that you can’t visit other planets in other galaxies. Just the ones in our solar system and galaxy. While that is nice and all, I’d really enjoy to be able to travel the universe and see other things.

      What's your opinion on the current NMS,is it any good?has it delivered on it's promises?

    • @RawAustin
      @RawAustin  Před 5 lety +8

      Honestly, I think it has. Every aspect of the game has been improved, multiplayer actually exists, the level of detail has significantly been upped since the 'NEXT' update, and the entire experience has been somewhat streamlined to make it more palatable.
      However an important point would be the console experience, in terms of performance and bugs. I've only played the game on PC, and I've been running into several performance hiccups. A number of bugs have introduced themselves after the aforementioned 'NEXT' update, like terrain you've manipulated "regenerating" making underground bases a pipe dream.
      Most of the bugs stem from the introduction of multiplayer, so it'll take a bit more time before I'd call it stable. And the grind is still quite strong, I'd say it'd take anywhere from 27 to 80 hours to complete the first galaxy. And as someone who gets easily hooked on collection and base building I'd say I have a problem.
