Gemma Whelan is the standout actor in this series for me. Her expressions and reactions are amazing. When Anne told her she would basically disown her if she married Abbot, I’ve never seen a reaction and acting like it. She looked wounded., crushed and I was right there in the moment with her
I agree. Shes my favourite character and she looks lovely
My sister was complicated
Suranne Jones & Gemma Whelan"s acting in this scene is nothing less than Incredible!
Anne Lister in life was a strong Tory and had all the prejudices about landed property being superior to “trade “. Despite her eccentricities, she was extremely conventional in this way
Yes I liked that they didn’t try to hide her classist and traditional ‘male’ views. That just bc she was a lesbian woman it didn’t make her sympathetic to anyone whom she didn’t see as equal to an educated landowning man.
In this issue, Anne acted like the typical male 19th-century landowner whose sister wants to marry someone of a different social class. It was the 1830s in Britain and people were expected to marry someone of their own social status. Mr Abbot may have been wealthy, but in the eyes of the British landowner class, he was considered to be of inferior status because he was a merchant and not a landowner. Its a shame that Anne was so conventional when it came to this, and chose to follow the conventional rules and traditions she ignored when it came to her own personal life. I felt sorry for Marian.
The funny thing is Marion would have disowned her sister probably if she knew she was a lesbian. She has no idea. Because although plenty of people back then obviously did know these things went on. Plenty did not. Marion is niave.
But Anne is a hypocrite. I don't understand why she can't find Marion a man of more suitable standing. If that's the problem. To greedy with the dowry maybe. Condemning her sister to spinsterhood.
Lou winters the family know. They turn a blind eye
@@trishabayley6669 Marion really doesn't know. Lol.
The aunt does and possibly her father. But Marion has no idea lol
@@louwinters508 I actually think Marion would have been accepting if she had known. Annes aunt is, and I think her father knows and just choose to not aknowledge it and turn a blind eye.
Marian is naive, but since she is such a family loving and loyal person, she would have bee accepting: I think subconsciously, she knows on some level that Anne had a relationship with Mariana and now with Ann Walker, because of the way she speaks of them, but I don't think she is aware of what she must on some level understand deep down.
Anyway, I agree. Anne should have done more to help her sister find a man of her own class, if that's so important, and since she hasn't bothered, she should accept when Marian breaks conventional rules, just like she has done herself.
I think Anne is, simply, a bit selfish. I do think she loves Marian, but in the same condescending way as most 19th-century landlords; and like them, she didn't really bother that much about her sister and just expected her to stay at home sewing, while she was out having fun. Basically: Anne acts like any 19th-century upper class man in many issues, and she treats her sister like most men of her class treated their sisters.
I don't think we have to rule her out as the "typical landowner male". It's rather simple to me, her family is rich and she has worked really hard to be able to be in charge of the family money since she is a woman. A marriage would make her vulnerable because there is the risk her enemies would want her sister's husband to take over. That's the reason why Walker's family didn't push her to marry anyone after her husband died, because her sister was in charge of her states and her sister's husband was content with them owning everything on paper. Anne is thinking with facts she can't take emotions into account when she knows use has enemies and her position is weakened by a marriage. The fact that Abbot first shows interest in her sister and then dumps her and then returns with a marriage proposal is suspicious. Specially during the polls and when they are trying to figure out how to move the coal with boats...and have the competition from the development of rails. That's why she is asking her sister to be clear with Abbot and tell him that nor she or her children will inherit anything. If Anne wanted to get rid of her sister she would just accept the marriage and then would never look back, but she is telling her what will happen to her financially. Yes, she is threatening her as well because she clearly doesn't trust Abbot, I think she won't trust any man with her sister because to her is a threat financially. So someone, anyone who truly wants to marry Marion for love will have to put up with Anne's bad humor, and provide for Marion the same quality of life she has been provided by Anne. That's what Anne is trying to tell her sister when she says she deserves better. I don't think Abbot is completely honest, maybe is the writing but he was away for a good time and now is suddenly back professing love....when did he fall in love if he was absent all this time? And Marion has to keep defending him with her family, he is not giving an explanation, I thought when you love someone you try to clear the air with the family as much as you can and if you can't then well that becomes their problem you can't just expect to be accepted right off the bat of you never even show up....so I see Anne's point...Marion is use to a completely different type of life and she wants children too, they will have more expenses....if Abbot fails, Anne will have to help her sister and her children...as much as she says she won't speak to her we have seen Anne will help as she did the boy who broke his leg.
You know what I really love? When she leaps out of carriages and out of doors. There is so much energy and zest for life.
Everything about this show is impeccably brilliant absolutely 10 out of 10. Sally Wainright please do more seasons 👍
Can’t go in for too long. She died six years after this seasons setting
@@LHC-mx6ruyep, and Captain Sutherland took the house from Ann
I absolutely love all the dinner scenes. The exploding cow...well - the facial expressions around the table.Entertainment at its best.
This scene was wonderful. Painful, but wonderful. Poor Marian
I really loved this series if for nothing else OUTSTANDING COSTUMES AND FANTASIC ACTING..HELL IT WAS ALL GREAT...EVEN HUBBY LOVED IT...OR.SAID HE DID...YA NEVER KNOW...THEY OFTEN DO THINGS TO JUST MAKE SPOUSES HAPPY BUT I BELIEVED HE DID...HE IS SO GREAT.
So nice to see someone post positive things about their partner! Good job!!
Superb series, brilliantly acted by all.
This is heartbreaking! Poor Marion. :(
I've loved this show since the beginning, but what I especially love about season 2 is that we are really getting to see Anne's flaws. It's easy to have her as a hero - for being a woman far, far ahead of her time, for being strong and knowing herself, for not wasting a moment of opportunity in life. But she had layers and flaws, as we all do. Though she's famous for being unconventional, she held tightly to the conventions which favored her. That meant that she wasn't always fair, and she wasn't always right. It meant that sometimes she was horribly selfish. And that makes her human.
Most accurate and succinct wrap on Anne. In season 2 we both appreciate her and distain her.
This was so horrible! I felt so sorry for Marian. I understand Anne may not like Mr Abbott, but if Marian is happy, why does she care so much? Her sister is happy for her and Ms Walker. Also, why does she not want her sister to inherit Shibden after Ms Walker? Why give it to a cousin instead of your own sister? Really don't get it. Otherwise, I am loving the show!! ❤❤
Because she wants Shibden to remain in the Lister's family. Marian's children would not be Lister.
Edit: word.
Status at those times mattered more than love and happiness. Even in Anne's choice of Miss Walker. If Ann Walker was in traide or something that is less status than landownership, Anne wouldn't even looked at her. Same applies to the family. Anne and Marian may not be as friendly but Anne cares about Marian and her place in society, in her own way.
AL was incredibly classist, even for her own time.
Social standing won't keep you warm at night...
Anne doesn’t like Mr Abbot because he doesn’t work in a trade that she seems fit in a higher class way. Anne would want him to be part of the Tory party and be a landowner of many houses but it’s not always for everyone to be a landlord. To be quite honest Mr Abbot is the least dangerous man Marian could marry and at least he works in the wool business where there’s a high demand for because of the production of clothes, bedding and other usages.
He is rich, Richer than the Listers in fact. However, he lacks status and lineage which were both very important back then. Anne thinks he is only chasing after Marian so he can marry into status. He is also already a Tory.
Marian deserves so much better but ooff yes, that was brutal. I love this show 😍
This is a fantastic series love everything about it. But yes Anne was way to harsh with her Sister. I think he is a gold digger, I do hope she can find someone like Anne has Ann.
Gemma Whelan is brilliant in this scene!
My absolute favourite show ❤
Brutal! What a great show and cast!
"If?" 👌
Now it's time Anne got some honesty, Marian has plenty she could say about how Anne affects the Listet name. What a hyprocrit she is.
Would you say that if she were a man?
@@cherific6258 If they were gay at that time patronising their sibling YES
@@cherific6258 what a random thing to say
You are missing the point. What she is really doing is trying to protect Shibden and the Lister line from being taken over by fortune/status hunter.
Exactly!!!!
Masterclass in acting well done ladies.
Everybody gangsta until they show bbc news
Gemma is fabulous. More of her please
OMG, I love this show!

Oh dear. 💔

Best series😊😊😊
Wished the lady who did this would of made more seasons..or has a new project
She just finished doing Season 3 of her Cop Drama, Happy Valley. Very worth a watch. No word on if GJ is renewed for a 3rd season though.
There’s more to her story so hopefully the 3rd and final season will happen
I feel sorry for marian that Anne would disown her for wanting to marry someone beneath her in Anne's eyes. I could feel Marian's heart breaking.
Opssssssss 🤭🙏🤔
😀😀
Anne, Are you serious right now? Why?
God Bless All Amin ❤️
I love this show! I obviously don't for certain whether the real Anne Lister was like this or not, but, as far as the charecter goes, I really don't like her when it comes to her interaction with some of people... Such a hypocrite, to say the least!
"This house may go to another but it won't be you or him
and then it's entailed to the Listers of Swansea."
Anne may not have the right to designate heirs of her own free will.
I need an expert in hereditary law from that time.
Wow. She showed a very ugly corner of her heart. I wouldn't treat my family like that. Reprehensible!
Anne debió ser un poco más solidaria con su hermana que la apoyó en su relación con Ann.

Que horrible vivir en ese siglo con gente separada en castas, sin derechos humanos.
not defending Anne here but Abbot did dump Marion didn't he?? and he didn't explain why. The way I understand it is that Anne wants Marion to tell Abbot they won't inherit anything...if after learning this Abbot backs out then he never loved Marion...if he stays then Anne will have a different opinion, if she doesn't then well, he will have to convince Anne in a way....all this stems from the fact that abbot dumped Marion and then returns with a marriage proposal....thats suspicious imo
Its illegal to be this early
The more these diaries reveal about AL the less I like her.
Well you wouldn't. most of the upper classes are very unlikeable people. Especially back then. Not making excuses but it was how they they were raised and life was hard for them too.
Anne wasn't exactly one of life's do gooders. And was a complete snob.
But I admire her for simply doing what she wanted in a time where that was hard. Narcissistic maybe but you got to admire it a bit
