That 42⁰f is probably your opening temperature. At 42⁰f there wouldn't be anything to defrost. Lol.

To test the actual physical switching of the thermostat, you can dip it in a cup of ice water (going to be 32 degrees Fahrenheit, as long as mixed and ice still present). Observe it switching (closing, for the normally open model shown); then remove from ice water to see it switch again as it warms.

As long as the DF is above the trip temp it will be open, but if you measure it and it’s colder than it’s trip point it better be closed. And to be clear, when this switch is closed it only enables the defrost process, it won’t actually cause the unit to defrost when it closes.

My 26 year old Kenmore dehumidifier started frosting up the coills (covering in white ice). It has worked perfectly every summer until now.
It reads a closed circuit at room temperature on a work bench.
Now to find were I can buy a new thermostat.

For the new guys out there - Not entirely correct - if the Ambient temperature is below 42 degrees Your switch will be closed. Just make sure to check switch in a room where the temperature of that room is above the temperature value on the defrost temperature sensor.

I been in HVAC for 30 years went on a no heat call this weekend seen a unit I've never seen before Lennox isn't that popular in my area a few people have them but not many this was a Pulse 21 90 percent gas furnace never seen a set up like this but anyway everything is concealed it has a air flapper valve below the combustion fan and it was raising hell what exactly does this part do I have no idea found nothing on Google to help so I called an old friend of mine that's retired but he has been a service tech for many many years and he told me that furnace requires special tools made by Lennox and very doubtful you can find them anymore if you could same thing with parts it would probably cost more to fix it than a new furnace would cost he said 25 years ago when the pulse was new it was probably the best furnace made just wondering if anyone has experience with this furnace I know someone knows about them but I sure don't
