- Just a quicky (so no apologies for quality!!) video on using a 3/8" extension bar for removing the freehub body from a Giant sealed bearing hub without having to faff about finding an 11mm Hex Key. Just so happens that the 3/8" drive fits perfectly for the job.
Freehub body is Giant 8/9/10 Speed Sealed Bearing Freehub Body, (FH06)
Hub is a "Giant Tracker Performance" - Věda a technologie
I've just successfully removed the freehub on my 2006 Giant Sedona using the 3/8 drive extension used in your video. This is after spending about 4 hours looking in my workshop for anything that might do this, scouting round various local stores for an 11mm hex tool, and ringing a few less than helpful bike stores. And then I saw your video. I had been tearing my hair out - a million thanks.
Glad it helped. Shame you went to all the trouble beforehand 😕👍
This guy is a genius, flies under the radar but should really be working for NASA or in family in Jamaica 👍🏻
Plenty of 11mm hex tools on Amazon...and they are very cheap...
I just found this looking for how to service the freehub, after spending £12 on an 11mm allen key 🤦♂️. Great tip!!
Sorry you didn't find it sooner! 😕
Yeah fuck it, ive been looking for 11mm key all along. Now im gonna try this
It doesn't work for all types because some have less 'flats' than others. Some just have hex key shape. Some have 2 or 3x the number of flats. 👍
@@dcchap9793 good feedback, keep them coming Big Chap
what size
you absolute belta! worked like a charm! thank you so much!!! couldnt work it out! none of my hex keys would fit!
Glad it saved you some hassle 👍
thanks, i love this video, i just went to Canadian Tire and bought a Hex set that did not work
Glad it helped
Dude!!!! That is a fantastic tip! Thank you for sharing it!!!
Glad it helped.. I actually ordered an 11mm at the time but got impatient waiting for it and found an alternative.. Saves a Friday afternoon job waiting for the post on Monday in a pinch 🤣
you can also put a long m7 bolt in it and just pipe wrench it out, depends on what you have in ur drawers.
Finally. Thank you!
Nice on the video ma guy may God bless you and the family bike life for life 💯🙏
Genius! This worked on my FH04K-152B-FH204K-801 freehub.
Thank you very much, that’s what I needed to know
Glad it did the job 👍
Dude, you really made my day! Thanks!
Sweet.. Man! You have just saved me a huge wait and a few dollars! thanks very muchly!
Glad I could help!
thank you
Ingenious idea 💡
Glad you think so!
Brilliant. Thank you.
Thank you , Thank you , Thank you 😊😊
You're welcome 😊
I doing the same too, to my MTB trek from 2012 until now 2024 but is good
I wish I had seen this video yesterday when I had it all torn down.
often the way 😕
You are great 👍😂
best vid
Thank you very much
Glad it helped 👍
In this earth...u need to find out ur own solutions💪
yes it is good idea..i want to try
it worked! 😊
Great!
Now, do a tutorial of how to do all that… One Hand!
😂
Love❤you bro nice treps and trecs
Please help, will this trick work on my retro rear Shimano Deore LX FH-M570 hub?
Thank you
No Shimano use a std 10mm Hex Key
Everyone has one of them , I'm weird so I have an 11 mm hex 🤣😂
I wish i'd seen this yesterday before borrowing a 12mm from neighbour, to find it wasnt the right size, then popping round to 2 shops and none had the 11mm for sale, and the local halfords couldn't remove the freewheel.>
Anyway ordered from amazon a 11mm bit and it arrived today.
Did you replace the Freehub? what model was it?
I have a merida and it seems very similar to that one, but no model number anywhere.. apart from 11S compatible..
Details are in the description. Every chance the merida hub is the same/similar as its quite a generic hub. Sometimes have to swap the old seal or endcaps inside the freehub over as they can differ even if the freehub body is the same
Just like that I can't believe
You know how to take apart the free hub when you get it off to clean?
Thanks,
Great many thanks
Why can’t I find the a video like this for the hun on my Mongoose Walmart bike? So frustrating, I’ve spent a day and a half screwing with this. lol
Did it work on your hub? Be interesting to know which other hubs use the same kit. Freehub bodies are often generic parts with some subtle differences in axle covers and spacers but the bodies are normally the same.
Hey nice Video man you helped me a lot i wanna replace my 7 Speed Body with a 8/9/10 Speed one any tips wich 8/9/10 Speed Bodys are compatible ? Greetings from Germany
I couldn't say I'm afraid. Unless it was a 7spd body with a spacer you may find it wouldn't fit anyway as the 'cog' spacing is the same for 7 & 8spd making the body longer for 8 spd. The axle may need reconfiguring and the nuts and spacers on the axle would then be wrong and no longer fit between your rear dropouts. If you have a box of old bits including hubs you may be able to cobble something together that works. The older giant hubs are a fairly generic hub used by all sorts of manufacturers and labelled up to suit but it would be trial and error unfortunately which would likely end up expensive if you don't get lucky. You MAY (not always) also find you need to 're-dish' your wheel to keep the rim central in your frame.
I just stabbed a 4 inch long 1/2 inch bolt into the backside of the hub and hit it with an electric impact drive. Backed it right out.
Good idea. 👍 If it worked... Why not?!? 👌
But not on this underground... Uhhh
My freehub has 12 points will this method work ?
Hi! I have road bike Giant. Removed freehub body, need new one and looks same like on video. Could you please tell me what name brand is. Thank you in advance!
Go to www.giantbikespares.com/
They are VERY helpful and if you give them your frame number you will get right one if they are the original wheels.
Thank you millions time. I'm found there already hub body that what exactly I'm need. Gone order today. Thank you.
Ok now come over to my garage and remove mine… 🚴
Hi I have giant TCR 2021, it has a 12mm Allen for removing freehub. It's too tight I can't get it off, any tips?
Clamp the short side of the hex key in a vice (so it can't turn) if you have one. Slide hub onto it vertically and use/turn the rim (horizontally). Added leverage should do it. If no vice use a large ring spanner (ring end) 20mm or similar over the short end of the hex key, again for leverage. Put the wheel on the floor and put your chest on it for stability. Probably worth putting rag on floor too in case you slip and smack ur knuckles. 👍
@@dcchap9793 thanks for the quick response. I tried that with 20mm 1/4 inch extension bar and 12mm socket attached to the Allen key. With my chest on top and wall to the side so the wheel was stable. It won't budge. I'm starting to question if it has reverse threads. The bike is only 3 months old. 5,000 km ridden. I just need to service the freehub.
Is it a giant hub or another brand?
@@dcchap9793 it has no particular branding, drivetrain is a tiagra groupset. I recently replaced the cones with Shimano parts so I am assuming the hub design is Shimano. Albeit unbranded.
@@dcchap9793 upon further inspection, it is a giant SR2 wheelset if it helps.
I swear they did this shit on purpose. Why they couldnt use 10mm allen key?
I need a 11mm too. good luck finding one in germany for a good price. :D
Its 100percent on purpose, there is no good reason I can come up with. I've run into weird allen key sizes on every set of stock wheels I've had
@@isaiahfrey9549 exactly - i have 10, so they move to 11. next it will 10.5 just so a 11 doesnt fit. with a extra alignment tooth so to render all tools useless.
any hints on how to replace the bearing in the freehub body?
sorry haven't had it apart. probably just a knock out cartridge bearing. Give it a good clean first though before you start giving it a 'tap' as it may have a circlip hidden away in there.
you need to remove the dust ring and then you need a tool to undo the bearing cup (I have one, where are you?). That allows you to remove the fh body and examine the bearings and pawls.
@@dcchap9793 it's not always possible to open the freehub body even with the freehub tool.
If the freehub rotates nicely with a nice freewheel click then if the bearing cup can't be removed then just use it until the freehub has to be replaced (bearing cup can be very tight, it is reverse threaded btw).
Meanwhile find a replacement freehub so you know where to go when you need one / the freewheel no longer gives a clean clicking sound.
@@DeepakKumar-lv4te Hi Deepak. I have trouble unscrewing the first bearing raceway/cup. I turn it clockwise but it won't bulge. I need to remove it to service the rest of the bearings. Any idea how to remove it? I see that the hub is made from aluminum, while the freehub is made of steel, im afraid i will shear off the locking ridges of the hub while trying to unscrew the bearing raceway/cup.
Bull spit, ive been tryna take that piece apart for months
Hi,
I found this exact type of freehub on a old Giant bike and it has a big wobble / play and I want to replace it but I cannot find this model anymore. Anybody knows the type of this one or even better, an alternative that works?
I would really appreciate the help.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Sorry bit late only just seen this. These guys are great and may be able to help.

How do you take the cap off first before accessing the hub/bearing?
It depends on the hub. Some have a 5mm hex key internal to the cap and it just unscrews. Some just have an oring and just pushed in. Others (not very often) have a grubscrew that holds them on the axle.
@@dcchap9793 I think mine is the type that just pushes in, but I’m having difficulty pulling it out. Any tricks?
@@fastsvo sometimes you can get in and use a traditional 15mm or 17mm cone spanner under the head of the spacer as they are thin enough to angle in past the freehub body. Pop a rag around it to stop it damaging the soft ally and then you can normally CAREFULLY lever it against the freehub body gently and pop it out. Hope that makes sense. I seem to remember I once used a router or grinder spanner in a pinch as they are often also thin usually awful spanners but in this case handy.
Can you make us some more videos old Chap? Make them longer and less jumpy and you would be a big hit on CZcams... show us what you’ve got 👉🏻👌🏻👉🏻👌🏻👉🏻👌🏻
how did you remove the axle? mine wont buldge
sorry for the late reply. From memory it was just a traditional cup and cone lock nut setup so either a 17 & 19mm or 15 & 17mm cone spanners. I cant remember exactly. Because of the number of hubs these freehub bodies are used in sometimes the axle also has a 4 or 5mm internal hex key profile.

What tools it is??
just an extension bar for a ratchet/socket set.
can i use 12 alenkey
No it's definitely 11mm
How can I find that tool 🔧
just the end of a socket extension arm for any socket set. thats the point. we all have it in our tool boxes and yet they try to sell us a £15 11mm allen key
😂
Are 11mm hex really that hard to find? My local hardware store has several in stock- to say nothing about Amazon.
No. I've never said they were hard to find. They are simply obscure in that they are not normally in a metric 'set' 2,2.5,3,4,5,6,8,10,12 mm, and to someone that starts the job with a view to doing it at that time, its just a solution that saves you GOING to the hardware store or ORDERING something off amazon. Using the term 'hardware store' I'm guessing you are over the pond somewhere? USA? well over in Europe and several other parts of the globe metric is the norm so having imperial Hex Keys is not always a toolbox go-to. Yes even a 7/16 inch = 11.1125 mm in all likelihood may work but its a quick fix for those that need it and more likely to have a 3/8 drive knocking about than an 11mm or 7/16" Hex key.
@@dcchap9793 Dude, you are wound tight. Chill. But beside that, rule one of shop is: never START a job if you don’t have the proper tools to FINISH the job.
Lol yeright. Wow. Did little Mr 'live in a perfect world' get his knickers in a twist over an imperfect solution to a simple problem folk might not know they have until they start the job...... Yawn
@@dcchap9793 Cool story, bro.
Awwwww bless.
3/8 extension?
Yup. It was originally in the info but youtube changed it to a 'short'?!?.... And its vanished.
Scratches your rim
It will do if you do it straight onto the ground. Leaving tyre on is always a good idea for doing anything hub related as you always have more to get hold of and more protection for the rim.
@@dcchap9793 i like to go to the bike shop with high end parts because their floors having a rubber floor
@dcchap9793 any idea what freehub model that is? Mine seized up and I can't find any info to order a replacement
It's in the video info and if you are struggling to find one giantbikespares.com are very helpful.

How is 11mm hex obscure lmao
From the Cambridge Dictionary "Meaning of obscure in English- obscure - adjective (NOT KNOWN) - not known to many people" Does that answer your question?
Oh.....you forgot the question mark by the way, rhetorical or not. Like others your tool collection is obviously next level, unlike your.............
I don''t have the tool you use in the video either lol... btw putting a squared tool into a hex socket could damage the nut, why don't you just go on Amazon and buy a 11mm allen key, it's 8 quid ffs.
Thanks for your opinion 👍 but from someone that doesn't own a 3/8 drive I'll take your tool advice as errrr 🤔 'pending'. I assume you are the proud owner of an adjustable spanner though? Thanks again 👍🤣

My freehub has 12 points will this method work ?
I'm not sure to be honest? I can't remember how many mine had but don't see why not?
