To be fair, they've always been a safe place for the mentally challenged, it's a great opportunity to prove that handicap is not always a barrier to a career : a real chance to shine for individuals struck with low iq, lower morals and no ability to understand complex concepts like laws to still be able to thrive and prosper, all on public funds, with no financial accountability whatsoever, how wholesome.

Where do you draw the line? What if they want to suppress your speech? What if some cops show up at your door without a warrant and want to search your house because of an anonymous tip that was obviously wrong? For this reason, never give up your rights. Protecting your ID is understandable if you think someone is going to do something malicious with it, but handing it over to a cop, which is a routine thing to do at a traffic stop, doesn't strike me as unreasonable, especially if you've done nothing wrong. They'll do their checks and you'll be on your way, rights unviolated.

Here in Brazil, the police do not need any reason to ask for your identity, carry out a personal search of you or your car or motorcycle, they still ask where you live, if you have been arrested, where you were, where you are going, if you work, your profession.... The worst of all is that they approach you already pointing a gun at your head. The law says you are innocent until proven guilty but the police treat you like a criminal until you prove yourself innocent. These are just facts and not criticisms, I respect their work, we have a lot of violence here and police officers have an absolutely ridiculous salary for putting their lives in danger. It's strange for us to see people debating with the police in America, here if you do that, at the very least you'll get beaten up.

So the cop in the blue shirt is correct: he needs suspicion of a crime that you are committing, have committed or are about to commit to ask for identification. He also doesn’t need to articulate it to you. He needs to articulate it to a JUDGE. People don’t seem to grasp that part.

I walk to and from work almost everyday. For about two months, the city was doing construction on an overpass near my work. I lawfully used the detour route every time I walked through there and was still stopped by police on a few of the nights. Every time, I wished they would attempt to ID me but it never got to that.
