Wouldn't that be presumptuous? Of course Lady Catherine might give permission for Lewis to honor her late husband, or of course Catherine to honor her, but I think de Bourgh would be seen as trying to claim relationship to the family.
I always headcanoned them getting a pair of rowdy twin boys, William and Lucas. (William after the father and maternal grandfather. Lucas for mother’s maiden name. Coincidentally naming both of them after Charlotte’s father.) Figured that would mellow out Mr. Collins. Another idea was Lydia wanting to name a firstborn daughter after her sister Kitty and George quickly jumping on her actually being named Catherine after Lady Catherine de Bourgh and thus buttering up her Ladyship.
I do genealogy, and the usual pattern genealogists expect in England at that time is that the THIRD daughter is named after her mother. The first is named for the maternal grandmother, and the second for the paternal grandmother. So it is very possible Mrs. Bennet's name is MARY!
@@dorothywillis1 The short answer is something you decide is canon in your head. The long answer: “Headcanon is a slang term for someone’s personal interpretation of or belief about the details of a fictional story that aren’t part of the “official” account. In pop culture, the word canon refers to the aspects of a story or fictional “world” or “universe” that are considered to be “official”-meaning they have been confirmed within the story or in some other way (for example, an author or director might confirm something to be canon in an interview or in bonus material). In contrast, headcanon is simply what a fan believes (or wants) to be true about a story. It can involve backstory, what happens after the story ends, or any other aspect. Headcanon often involves shipping, which is the practice of romantically linking two characters who don’t have any romantic interactions in the actual story. Of course, it is possible for someone’s headcanon to become canon if such details later become part of the story or are confirmed as true in some way. Sometimes, the term is used in the context of theories that are intended to be humorous or ridiculous, as opposed to serious interpretations.”
@@sweetsandcharades8383 Thank you so much for the explanation! I had heard of "shipping," but not "headcanon." It makes perfect sense. I don't read fanfic, so I don't pick up these terms. One of my personal headcanons is that actually Miss Bingley was succeeding with Mr. Darcy more than most of us think and he was becoming, without being sensible of it, more like her and might well have married her because he felt comfortable around her and she was handy. My reason for this belief is the remarks she attributes to him, (Quoted from memory.) "She a beauty! I would as soon call her mother a wit!" That is a nasty little remark, and he is darn lucky Elizabeth probably won't hear about it or he would never hear the end of it, marriage being what it is. But it sounds a lot more like Miss B. than Mr. D.
I always imagined Mrs. Bennet's prename to be Mary. Jane was named after the grandmother on the father's, Elizabeth after the grandmother on the mother's side and Mary, at last, after her mother. That was like my family tradition. But also I could imagine Mrs Bennet to be a Lydia, for that's her favorite and most beloved daughter
@@Rabarbara91 Oof. Your suggestion that Mrs Bennet's personal name may be Lydia and that's partially why she has such an affinity for her reminds me of a story my great-aunt was telling me of how she and her sisters came to be named: first, their mother had followed family tradition and named her daughters after her sisters; then, she named her youngest after herself -- her baby and favorite child; unfortunately for her, after 15 years, long after she had thought she was done having children, she had a surprise baby, and this unwanted child needed a name and so, having run out of traditional family names, she gave the girl her own useless middle name which she had dropped upon marriage as was standard culturally at that time. My great-aunt was that surprise baby so that's where the bitterness in the story comes from.

Have you seen The Lizzie Bennet Diaries? Of the three sisters, Jane looks like a mix of Lizzie and Lydia. And their cousin Mary (on their father’s side) looks the most like Lydia. Meaning Lydia gets her looks from their father’s side of the family. Meaning… Lizzie gets her looks from their mother..! 😆😆😆 Just a silly headcanon but it amuses me so much and it fits with Lizzie being the one to dress up like Mrs. Bennet 😄
Can't help but compare to the episode in TNG where Dex in Captain Picards holodeck program based on the Dixon Hill novels is asked for his last name, and the holocharacter thinks about it and realize that he doesn't have any. So the holohodeck version of Mrs. Bennet wouldn't have a first name if someone asked her. (Blending of completely uncorrelated fiction I know.)
Perhaps Reg Barcley or Tom Paris could help you? ;)😉 I wonder what would go wrong with a Jane Austin based program and what story we would get? That would be fun.
@@larssjostrom6565 Red Dwarf did a Jane Austen on the holodeck episode. In one of the seasons with Kristine Kochanski, as the only female crew member, she wanted Jane Austen but the boys invaded with tanks.
They have 5 daughters so one of them has to be named after their mother. The only possible case in which I could see her name being Fanny would be if they did name a daughter after Mrs Bennet but that child died. It was fairly common for families to re-use the names of babies who died but if the child lived longer (especially if she was still alive when Lydia was born) and/or the family were especially grief stricken they might not have re-used the name.
I always just assumed she was Miss Jane Gardiner, as the title of “Miss Gardiner” would have belonged to the future Mrs. Philips before their respective marriages.
My Grandmother's name was Frances and she hated when anyone called her Fanny. I really wanted to honor my Grandmother by naming my daughter after her but I didn't want her to have that nickname so I gave it to her as a middle name.
I have to go with Jane. It just seemed to be Austen's way of doing things as she does it in both Persuasion and Mansfield Park. It might be because her own mother and sister share the same name as well. I also go with George as the elder Mr. Darcy's first name.
I heard Fanny and went, “Mansfield Park?” 😂 Mansfield Park is definitely one of my favorite books of all time. I think I might even enjoy it more than Pride and Prejudice.
WHAT?! They just MADE UP A NAME?! I am shocked. In my mind the 1995 BBC miniseries did everything by the book, and the 2005 took all kinds of liberties. 😮😂
The trouble is that Austen uses so much indirect discourse so the book said something like Mr Gardiner tried to comfort his sister but the adaptation had to give the actor a line to say (from memory it was 'come now, Fanny') and they had to use a first name because siblings did keep using first names into adulthood. I suspect they thought modern audiences would be confused by characters sharing a name so went with another common name.
Just so you know Austen never wrote about Mr. Darcy practicing swordplay to help work through his emotions, nor did she write about him taking off his clothes to go swimming and then meeting Miss Elizabeth soaking wet lol
Adelaide was the wife of the king who succeeded George IV the Prince regent, therefore the popularity of that name came closer to the 1830s, a few years after pride and prejudice. It’s entirely possible for Lizzy’s daughter to be called Adelaide, though! Queen Adelaide was dearly loved by all classes so the name became very common around about the time Lizzy may be having her last children, since she’s only 20 in the novel and many women of that era continued having children into their 40s
It was a pretty brilliant reflection of Jane Austen to omit Mrs. Bennet's first name from the story. At that time and for a long time after, a woman was a non entity when she married. She couldn't open a bank account or own anything in her name. All of her personal assets, including the clothes on her back, dowry, or even an inheritance, became her husband's. So her not having a name can be seen as the fact that it wouldnt matter what it was. She was her husband's wife and mother of her children. Nothing more
