    Nice idea for a video! And I wonder, what’s the oldest book that you have? and how do you find old books? You seem very knowledgeable about books and time periods. For me, it’s really confusing to know if a book is old or it’s a copy of an original or another print. Tips on this could be another video idea too. Once again, great video!

      Thank you for watching! The oldest book I personally own is 1733, with a few other 18th Century books all of which I bought from the same private house clearance.
      As far as finding old books, I guess I’d want to know what YOU personally mean by “old” and what you’re looking for in collecting them: specific titles? Certain bindings? General aesthetic appeal? I may be able to help guide you more specifically, but some tips for finding old books are:
      For specific titles, search through bookfinder.com; it’s a search engine for online bookshops worldwide and has a feature where you can set publication dates. For instance, just the other day, I was looking for an 18th century copy of Gulliver’s Travels, so I typed in the title (originally Travels of Lemuel Gulliver, into Several Remote Nations of the World…) and put an upper publication date limit of 1799.
      If looking more generally, find your local rare/antiquarian bookshops or sometimes simply antique shops and have a browse. Or online, AbeBooks is a great marketplace where you can also filter searches by year. Sometimes ebay is a good bet, too, but it can be harder to do broad searches on that.
      I will jot all of this down as a potential video idea, though!

    Great video! Loved it. - Another idea on why so many Penguin Clothbounds were included: product placement / movie sponsorship. Just an idea, though.

    I'm sure your have better ideas on looking for rare books than just doing google searches..,which I already have done. If I'm looking for certain rare books any ideas besides google searches?

    • @SquirrellyNerdyJess
      @SquirrellyNerdyJess  Před 2 lety

      For specific rare book searches, my go-to is bookfinder.com! It’s a search engine for online bookshops worldwide and you can do advanced searches with specific book details like publisher and date ranges. It picks up all major websites - AbeBooks, Amazon, ebay, etc. - plus some smaller and even independent bookshops, not every single one, but a good deal of them. I also will check Etsy separately as this doesn’t get picked up on bookfinder and many people use it to sell antiquarian books with the “vintage” side of that marketplace. Good luck!

    Do you happen to know how to stretch out a book when a spine bows in towards the eye? It only does it on one side when I try to stretch it out. I think it was sitting on a shelf for too long and the pages saged over time. I dont know what to do or where to look to fix it

      Hmm. Can you send me an email with some photos (jess.trainedsquirrels@gmail.com)? I think I know what you’re talking about but I’d like to make sure before I offer any advice. It may not be something fixable, but I’ll give it a shot.

    A show that has driven me crazy when it comes to books- Buffy and its spin off Angel. I love them both, but I particularly hate a scene where a character gifts another one a "first edition" of the Divine Comedy... Seriously? It definitely doesn't look like incunabula!! They also read a look of books that look like manuscripts (when did these kids get paleography lessons?) and sometimes even mention that they're in sumerian (that's not a clay tablet that you're holding...). It's very nitpicky of me, but also very ridiculous.
