07:04 Add oil to the fuel?
Do TPI bikes foul plugs? Sensor problems? The TPI air screw mod? How does TPI KTM or Husqvarna compare to the carb models? The TPI bikes typically have a softer bottom end power delivery, but similar top end. The main reason is a softer ignition curve, but the location of the injectors also contributed due to a reduced opportunity for fuel/air to mix properly at low revs. So this is a TPI review. Some models have spluttered at low revs. But the carb models can have problems too. Since 2017 the jetting has caused spluttery power and poor fuel economy. We will talk about TPI sensor problems soon. The finicky Mikuni carb is extremely difficult to get running consistently. Both carby and TPI bikes respond very well to basic mods. And once set up correctly both have very similar power delivery. Do TPI bikes need rebuilds more often? We suggest top end rebuilds every 80 to 100 hours maximum for a 250 or 300. The TPIs are especially sensitive to top end wear as blow-by past the rings will begin to alter the crank pressure readings sent to the ECU. How reliable is a TPI bike? Generally they are reliable but there have been issues with some of the 17 ECU maps released by the factory. Some caused problems, others have been much better. We find the TPIs are reliable once a few basic mods are done. The most important mods? Incorrect TPI air screw setting. This is used to adjust the idle speed, but it has effects on midrange revs too. Remove the stock grub screw and fit a longer bolt that can be adjusted by hand while the engine is running. Incorrect settings result in a weak or hanging idle, spluttery power delivery, and poor throttle response. Use the latest extreme mapping from the factory, which uses more oil. And fit an idle bolt, which allows separate tuning of the air and idle settings on the throttle body. Lets look at specific issues. Has a lack of oil caused problems? On some TPI models, yes. Fouling spark plugs. A lack of oil can cause significant wear up the back wall of the cylinder, usually centered over the rear boost port. You can check by removing your exhaust and looking at the back wall of the cylinder for vertical black or grey marks. The 2018 and 2019 models used a reasonable amount of oil, although some used less than others. The oil tank did not have a screen in it so it was important to clean the tank and test the output of the oil pump. 2020 models had a screen fitted to the tank but unfortunately the mapping used less oil, causing a high number of failures on low hour bikes. The factory has now released new extreme maps. These bring the oil level back to roughly the same level as the 2019 bikes, Fouling plugs at startup. This emerged with 2020 and 2021 models. A simple solution was to pull out the cold start knob on the side of the throttle body when starting the bike cold, and let it idle for a few minutes before touching the throttle. A more permanent fix is to update the ECU with more appropriate fuel maps. The ECU reflash that we offer addresses this issue and virtually eliminates plug fouling. If you consistently foul plugs you can use the cheaper NGK BPR7ES or BPR8ES plugs. These still perform very well but at a fraction of the cost. Remember if your bike suddenly starts fouling plugs it might be a worn top end or a faulty crank pressure sensor. Spluttery power at lower revs. Some 2018 and 2019 KTM and Husqvarna TPI models had spluttering and unpredictable power delivery at part throttle and lower revs due to issues with the stock mapping. The only complete solution is to reflash the stock ECU with improved maps. But it pays to check other possible causes first: a faulty crankcase pressure sensor, an incorrect air screw setting, low fuel pressure, or a worn top end. Do I need to replace the oil pump regularly? Generally the oil pumps are very reliable unless they get dirt or grit inside them. As mentioned the 18 and 19 models had no oil screen and were susceptible. Faulty Crankcase Pressure Sensors (CCP).The ECU uses the data from these sensors to determine the fuel, ignition and oil needs of the engine. But it will usually be fine at higher revs. The easiest test is to swap the crankcase pressure sensor with the ambient pressure sensor as they are identical.

My riding buddy had a ‘21 seize in less than 10 minutes of total run time. KTM gave him a replacement which made it to 20 hours before seizing. KTM rebuilt it, but it took several months because there was a shortage of top end parts. They ended up getting spare parts from one of their race teams in US (we are in Canada). That shortage of parts, along with KTM’s hard enduro riders recently spotted riding bikes with a different injection system tells me all I need to know about buying a current TPI.

All the mechanics I know are unofficially saying 200 hours should be fine if you aren't pushing a two stroke carb model hard. I should point out quite a few TPI owners have gone that far (or more) without problems, although chances are these will be 2018 and 2019 models which had mapping that used a reasonable amount of oil.

Decided to swap to 2T. Owned a 350 exc-f and 1 month ago purchased a 2022 Te150i. Amazing great fun bike to ride. Still not used with the 2T smell nor the sound, however I feel I'm becoming a better rider with this one. I can lug it everywhere. Have already 25 hrs on it. I had issues with it in the beginning, had that sputter in low-mid revs that I couldn't figure out. Swapped the sensors, no change. Bought a tacho and noticed that the factory idle was way high - 1800 rpm, while the manual states 1400-1500. I've turned in the air bypass screw to have the idle as manual says and now it runs better. After an 1 hour ride, I even get now a slight oil leak on the exhaust. It still sputters ocasionally, but doesn't bother me as long as the bike performs well. I guess it's a mapping issue. I wouldn't invest another 900 on a remap and a head insert to be honest as long as I have fun with this bike. Also, in the beginning I was very frustrated because I didn't know how to properly warm up the bike. These bikes are very sensitive until they reach the proper operating temp. 150s run extremely cold. I've installed a fan, but it has never started 🙄

    2020 KTM 300 XC-W 6 days.
Bought brand new, and traded in at 100 hours. I had ZERO issues with this bike. Performed basic maintenance as required, ran US 91 octane ethanol free, used Mgf's oil's., changed the stock plug at 50 hours with no reason to other than it is spec'ed maintenance wise. Top end was clean. The front and rear sprocket had plenty of life, and the wheels had no play in the bearings at all.
After 100 hours, minus some dings, scratches, some peeling graphics, the bike ran as good as the day I bought it. The only reason it went out the door was to make room for the 2022 model and a fresher machine. 4th 300 XC'W I have owned since 2009, and never had issues with any of them. Previous to my last 300, I owned and built a Yamaha YZ300x (Athena Top End) with tuned KYB suspension. I noticed no detriment switching back to WP, and felt the 2020 was FAR and above the best WP suspension I have ever owned.

Great to hear you had no problems. Dave mentioned there have been 17 maps for the 2018 to 2021 models so I wonder if part of the problem is they were still tweaking maps in production runs? It could explain why some 2020 and 2021 have had premature wear and even seized from a lack of oil, and others haven't. I'm hoping the 2022 uses their most recent 'extreme' map or another one with more oil across the rev range.

Clean your spark arrestor screen sooner than a carb 2T. A clogged spark arrestor screen will cause severe stuttering/missing at low and high revs. That was the case for my 2021 TE300i before I knew it needed more frequent cleaning. Unforntunately the ambient air pressure sensor on my bike came from the factory with the "nipple" broken off, so it could not do the swap test. We rode a friend's 2018 carb back to back with a 2021 TPI and there was simply no comparison. And this was after the TPI had a custom cylinder head and aftermarket ECU fitted to try and get better grunt. It was such a big difference we are still wondering if the TPI was simply a dud bike.

Rode a new TPI yesterday very briefly. Felt 'weird' in power delivery. But I just assumed it was different than my carb model and not 'bad'. I'm sure I'd get used to it just fine. It feels softer in power but I think that is just inferring smooth power delivery as soft. My carb 300 definitely hits harder up top though.

When the pressure sensor reads high it runs rich and the spluttering starts you also lose power everywhere, when it reads low it runs lean and does the top end bog thing (runs out of map/ empty cells?).
I have 13 CCPS and use them as tuning dongles (electronic jets) I'm about 30+ meters above sea level (14.6 psi) and my senors read 14.1 for the 5 black China sensors and 14.2 14.4 14.5 14.6 14.6 14.6 15.2 15.2 a mix of KTM and China grey sensors.
I mix and match both baro and crank case to get it just right. Start with a middle range baro 14.4-5 then find a crank case one that gets it running pretty good and fine tune it with a baro sensor.
You can't have a large difference between them or the ECU gives an error code.
My bike seized 2x and probability a few minor ones in between, I think it's sticking check valves in the pump. I replaced mine then it was fine after that.

I know 5 other guys with 2020's all with similar hours no problems at all. It obviously depends how you treat it. Don't go flat out till she's nice and warm. Clean your oil screen etc.

Another option is to just ask your dealer for the 'extreme' map, Luke. In some cases dealers try to charge for this but often they'll do it for free because they know there have been issues with premature wear and even seizing. Certainly a lot of guys have had zero issues, other have. KTM has released 17 maps to date so it's possible they vary these even within a specific year... certainly some of the have used very little oil e.g. as little as 150:1 at certain revs.

The TPI bikes are not as reliable as the carb versions. Stock, the bottom end power is much softer. The oil injection fails in cold weather operation at startup as the injected oil coagulates on the reed block. The Crankcase Pressure Sensors fail frequently. The worst part for the consumer is that replacement parts are not only very expensive, but often out of stock. Waiting for months for parts for your $10,000 dirt bike that seized in less than a year old is extremely frustrating. KTM/ Husky has done a poor job of taking care of customers with their 30 day warranty. Hopefully you will have better luck.

Dave's info seems to suggest the 2019 mapping used enough oil to not worry about seizing or premature wear. But if you aren't fouling plugs then it won't be hurting the engine either. My reason for premix is, that I see a possible risk of short failure of the oil pump. If that happens, fuel will wash away the existing oil film like a degreasing agent. This is impossible with little oil content in the fuel.
