There’s a reason every professional film set uses some sort of filter in front of the camera. As you stated towards the end of the video, filters make a huge difference in the quality of what you are shooting.

Great review. I actually use nisi variable ND's and love them. I'm toying with the idea of, as you say, investing in a Matt box so will probably go for nisi as a brand because the quality is on point. Thanks for the review. 👍🏼

Of course you guys have a video on this. I'm in the market for ND filters for my Pocket 4K and 6K rigs. Switching up from the Polar Pro Basecamp system. It's good, but limited and I need NDs to use with CPs without the whole VND and IR stuff. Plus I want to use diopters and special FX filters and, again, the Basecamp is limited. Really helpful advice! I think a lot of people especially upcoming cinematographers tend to ignore or at best cut corners when it comes to great filters but your thoughtful video just highlighted the importance of investing in the right kit. I finally ordered a 0.9 and the Tilta mini MB. I'm looking forward to tested it out as I've only been using circular Vari ND. I'll buy other grades base on the test with the 0.9.

@@OfTwoLands Received both ND and Tilta mattebox. Unfortunately it's very difficult to fit the NISI filter into the Tilta mattebox. it seems the open hight of the mattebox is not large enough (just 4 inch, not more), so there is too much friction when inserting the filter. And as the mattebox plastic is soft, it's not helping.
How it works for you?
I'll have to return the mattebox and look for another option, likely a more relialable as the Misfit Atom.
Otherwize the NISI filter is very nice.

Beautiful imagery, as always. I'm currently using a Tiffen variable ND and black pro mist 1/8 on my GH5. It makes such a massive difference in making a dslr/mirrorless camera look like it's shooting film. Whenever it comes time to upgrade my camera I'll be picking up a set of these NISIs. Thank you for a very good and informative video. I ordered a mini matte box tilta and revoring variable nd + cpl filter from B&H. I got my matte box three weeks ago but I have not received the revoring filter. I am starting to think that it could maybe be a better idé to cancel the revoring and instead buying a NISI IRND 0,9? Do you think it is a better idé?

Do you know how these compare to the Hoya Solas IRND’s?
I bought some voigtlander primes and then I can use the really inexpensive 52mm thread NiSi IRND circular filters. Same works with Nikkors.
We've hesitated buying into 4x5.65 IRNDs since it is a rather large investment to acquire a range of filters. Specifically for the Tilta Mini Mattebox, I was also concerned with flaring and reflection due to the long distance between the front lens element and the 4x5.65 filter tray but your tests seem to show surprisingly good results(!) Thanks for showcasing the Nisi filters - been researching but could not make up my mind between top-tier brands of filters. Might give these a shot. Quick question: Noticed you mainly use two strengths of ND. How do you manage shutter-angle? Do you crank when you can? Keep up the good content.

I actually rarely change my shutter angle, always on 180 unless I absolutely have to like in order to achieve a special look for example.

Hi. Thanks for this review. I have a set of Zeiss classics, and am starting to look into matte boxes and filters. Do you run into any issues with the Zeiss lenses and focusing since the lenses extrude forward while focusing? Thanks.
Thanks for watching !! I haven't encountered any issues. I used only the Tilta mini MB since it is so small and not the Smallrig MB with the Contax though. I cannot use it with the 18mm as it rotates but the other ones are fine.

Is maintaining 180 degree shutter a main priority of yours when exposing?
Thanks !! I always shoot 180 shutter angle, but not a priority, I just leave it at that unless I absolutely need to change for flicker or extreme slow mo :)
So cool, what you used was the NISI IRND 0.9 light stop 03... for shooting outdoors in daylight do you think the Stop 05 might work for me...?

Hi, thank you for the review. I am wondering if the IR filters stack well? Have you tested stacked Nisi IRND filters for color shift?
This way we can stack a combination of 3, 6, 1.2 and 2.1 to get alle ranges.
Also, BH have priced these filters for $245, which is over $100 less than Nisi own site. Weird.

Hey i have the 18-35 what number stops do u use for when u havethe aperture wide open at 1.4. I wasnt sure if 6 stops is enough or if i shld go with the 7 stop

Hey! Tell me why you are using nisi mist black 1/8 and not 1/4. I think 1/4 has a more pronounced effect for light sources. (for example, for a sunset). Or do you use it to smooth out irregularities on the skin and is it better for this?
Hi, with your current experience using the 1/8 mist filter since you had it, are you finding it is sufficient for general use, or would you have gone stronger like a 1/4? I am trying to decide on one mist filter only in my kit and was considering the 1/4 for both day and night shots? Are you finding 1/8 flexible and useful for both night and day shots? Also, do you notice any color cast/shift with the mist filter? Thank you.
Hey, I do find it sufficient to soften up things. 1/4 is too strong generally for me. It just depends if you want a look or just softness I guess. I’d start with the 1/8. And no colour shift :). Cheers

For 400 euros you can buy a IR replacemen for the interior UV filter of the poket 4k, i saw a test in youtube and works fine!

Sometimes yes, not really possible with the Tilta Mini unless you use a circular one and a 4x5.65 maybe ?

Almost planned to buy screw on filters because I couldn't find a good mattebox set-up that isn't breaking the bank. This is amazing. Do you still use a screw on pola since the matte box only has one stage?
I'm curious about the Nisi C5 Matte box and the C5 Matte Box Cinema Kit. Have they asked you to review this or even to look at it? I didn't even know it existed until recently and I can't find it reviewed or talked about anywhere (1 vid on YT). It looks like a great system for young filmmakers (although a little limited) , especially looking at the alternatives out there (SmallRig, Tilta, Polar Pro). It gives you incredible value, VND (with no colour shift), PL, Mist and a 4 stop ND to double up the VND. I keep looking for a flaw and the only issue I find is that it's designed with a 95mm mount instead if 114mm - which only means you're limited in the lenses you can mount it on must be smaller than 95mm. It's odd to me. Is there something wrong with it that I'm missing? Would love your thoughts on it.

Thanks so much !! I am used to shoot handheld and I am usually quite steady. Keep your elbows close to your body, control your breathing, shoot wider, and move your legs for panning :).

Would you compare the nisi allure with the tiffen black pro mist?
I could but I own the circular Tiffen and the cinema Nisi so can’t really compare the two since they’re not really aimed at the same kind of shooting if that makes sense.
Would you highly recommend these rather than the bmpcc6k pro’s built in ND’s?
Yes, they are definitely better. Obviously not as a convenient as internals. I would use the internal for travel and personal and use the NISI for proper projects :).
Hi Flo, I can see you didn't use the Core Powerbase Battery pack here. I'm just wondering what battery solution you have in this case? Is it enough to last? Im trying to find the most portable and compact solution possible. Thanks in advance. Will
Hi, I always use the normal Canon batteries when doing short shoots or when travelling. Last long enough and can do a whole day with 3-4. Depends on what you shoot. For work get the Core, for personal shoots LP6 are more than ok. Cheers

Of Two Lands Hi Flo again, do you find that the LP6 batteries will run out and cut out suddenly in the BMPCC6K? The onscreen indicators don’t seem to be accurate and I’m worried that each time it cuts out it is doing the camera some damage. That’s why I’m thinking are more reliable solution.
Hello. In the description you have two filters 0.9 and 1.8. Will there be enough of them for all shooting tasks? Filters are not cheap; I would not want to take extra ones that are not needed. Recommend which filters should be required. You may have answered these questions in the video, but I don’t really understand English by ear.
Hi, yes, I’d say 0.9 and 1.8 allow you to shoot pretty much anything outside. Start with the 0.9 and see how you go 😊👍

Hi Tal. You can stack filters with the mini mattebox by for example screwing on a circular black pro mist filter on the lens before then attaching the tilta adapter ring into that filter. This way you can technically stack three filters - 2 circular (one on each side of the adapter ring) and one 4x5.65
Did you consider the polar pro base camp ?
Yes I did.
Base camp is great, from what I've seen, but it's not 4x5.65, and it's a closed system that can't mix and match with other matte boxes or filters.
Just got a matte box, and I'd love to get some of square filters. These IRND really interest me. I have a 6-9 stop polar pro VND, but it's often too dark. I'm also trying to only buy one filter to see how the convenience is while traveling.. would the .9 be good for the majority of shooting or should I aim for a straight non ND IR filter? Another helpful video !

Awesome video man! I wanted to get a set of filters like this for my bmpcc 4K but they are a bit out of my price range for now. I noticed that Nisi also sells a circular filter set for less money. I think it’s like 70$ per filter for 77mm size. Have you use them? I’m very tempted to try them since they also prevent the IR pollution.

@@TolaTheKurd I never bought them because I ended up selling my Bmpcc 4K for a Fuji X-T3. However, Matteo has a few videos where he uses those NISI IR circular filters and they work really well.

Hi, Florent. I want to buy these IR ND filters but I have a question, do they substitute the polarized filters? for example, for filming the water of the ocean it will work well?
Hey mate, they do not act as polarisers. NISI does sell some for that purpose but these ones are high end ND cinema filters, which I love :)

Internal Canon ones for personal, travel and small projects. Core SWX powerbase for bigger ones :).
Did you you use the Black Promist and the ND filter separately? Given that the Tilta only keys you use one at a time.

Thanks !! The 1.8 is great for super bright conditions like the beach or snow. Or when I need to shoot wide open during the day.

I have only use the VND and really like it. The Cinema ones are better quality though.

@@mandopacheco7097 you can get the Small rig matte box, it allows you to use two filters at once, if you want to use the Tilta, you can use a circular Filter and then attache the Matte box on top of it, If I'm not wrong.

Its name is "Nisi / Naisi" and it has the same pronunciation as "Nice".

Seems too expensive when you can just use a circular filter and screw it in, especially if it is only 3 stops in which case you can get a cheap circular filter for 50 bucks and it won't have much IR pollution at that ND. Plus it is a much more compact setup.
You can get them with 6 or 9 stops if you want. I do agree that having circular ones is more compact and affordable and I do use them too. The thing is these cinema filters are high quality glass, very different use for them. The same reason you can use a matte box or a $10 hood, or buy a $100 lens or a $1000 of the same focal length. We're talking difference in quality :).
@@OfTwoLands I know but you can get the same filters in the circular variant for much less. Any perceived difference isn't worth the significant costs outlay, impact to set-up time and bigger and less compact setup. Just IMO.
