  • Most people don’t think about live organ donation until it hits close to home. That’s exactly what happened to CBC’s Ioanna Roumeliotis when her brother suddenly needed a kidney transplant. She tells her family’s story of what it’s like to give and receive a life-saving organ.

My brave brother Steve donated his kidney to me 16yrs ago, still going strong. Never enough words of thanks for him. Polycystic kidneys in our family too. 50/50 chance of getting it. I did, and he gave one of his. I love you Steve ❤

I donated a kidney to my brother in 2019, and we're both doing great! Honestly, if you have access to an experienced and thoughtful donor program and an established team of healthcare professionals, for most people it's much like getting any other major surgery. Honestly, I imagine giving birth is probably more complicated and stressfull.
I got Shingles a few years ago and that was FAR more painful, stressful, and debilitating than recovering from the kidney donation. I was back at work within four weeks and up and back to my regular life in six.
It's such a wondeful thing you can do, especially for someone close to you. And if you can find a good healthcare center and donation team, it's practically routine for them. Very few complications these days!

My kidney shut down two years ago and my younger sister volunteered to test and was a match. Hopefully the transplant happens in the next year. Being on dialysis is very tough and I wish it on nobody.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and helping to raise awareness about living donation. I am almost at the end of the testing process here in Nova Scotia to donate to my brother-in-law who also has PKD. You’re right, it is a very intense process, and there are so many emotions and things to consider. Thinking of your whole family, especially your sister, and wishing you all the very best.

What a nice story - I am glad it worked out for them. Last week my eGFR took a sudden downturn from 28, and is now at 17. My sister and one of my brothers immediately offered one of their kidneys, as did my closest friend. The brother to whom I am closest did not. I am not sure why - maybe he has a health condition that I am unaware of. I am ever so thankful to my 2 siblings and friend that offered a kidney, but I don't know how I can ever repay them - I don't like to be indebted to people. In my heart, I know I would be the first to offer a kidney if the situation was reversed. I mourn the loss of my own kidney function - and am still trying to deal with it. I knew the day was coming, as I have had diabetes since I was 12, way back in 1972 - but I guess you are never really ready. I will probably go on dialysis for a while, as it takes months for the donor and recipient to get medical approval for the transplant. A month ago I was supposed to have 2-3 years before I would require a transplant, so now it has become much more urgent. I do, however, consider myself very fortunate - my dialysis time will hopefully be minimal.

Organ donation should be opt-out only, there are too few donors that are able to donate organs due to the very specific circumstances required to be a "dead" organ transplant.
