The fact the crowd foes dead silent in this scene shows how strong this really was and still is, you can even hear some of the crowd actually sobbing and choking up a bit, literally holding back tears. This scene hits hard as hell!
That was Karen Parsons in the background off set. It got to her so much, she started crying.
@@mrseddiediaz I believe it, it hits me everytime I watch it
agreed. i really appreciated that detail. there's no speech from Uncle Phil either like you'd expect from full house. just a simple, immediate embrace that expressed more than any prepared cliche speech could.
@@EclipseHedgehog it feels a lot more real that way too. If I were in Uncle Phil's shoes and I saw my nephew break down sobbing because his father just abandoned him *again*, I'm not sure I would know what else to do, to be honest. Sometimes a loving embrace is the only thing you can do when there's no good answer or happy ending.
The look on James Avery’s face right before Will says “how come he don’t want me man” line. Dude, that looked straight genuine. I think it hit him as well emotionally
I met my dad when I was 14. Turns out he lived 2 miles from me and never made any attempts to be in my life. He died later and I never cared. Peace
Damn and That’s a Shock About U!
I'm sorry so sad.
"No love for my daddy, cause the coward wasn't there. He passed away and I didn't cry, cause my anger wouldn't let me feel for a stranger." -Tupac
I'm sorry😢
It really sucks that kids have to go through that constant struggle to need dad in there life. There nothing I can say that will justify what you've been through but I AM sincerely sorry for you, I have seen it first-hand with my step-kid's dad. He only visited them when it benefited him. He'd also take the other kids he had with the bitch he cheated on my wife years before meeting me to kings island etc. and my step-kids would see the pictures on Facebook and cry because they knew there dad don't care for them. He also passed a month ago, but the kids wasn't to sad about given he didn't want to see them barely.
“You too... Lou”
Wow, that’s the exact moment Will disowns him. You just can’t come back from that.
Bruh that reminded me so much of a conversation with my own father it made me cry like a baby
Ruaumoko Yeah, that's my favorite part of this scene. Lou calls Will "son" even though he has never been a father and Will responds by calling him "Lou".
Fucking OOF.
If that didn’t hurt that man, even just a little, it sure as hell should have.
I could never imagine how heartbroken I would feel to know I had let my own child down so badly they couldn’t even acknowledge me as their parent.
It will never make sense to me how anyone can actually be fine with not being part of their own kid’s life.
That shit hurt me and I dont even have kids.
"Will is not a coat in the closet that hangs around until your ready to wear it"

Bangtan Jams for me it was other way around as I was watching I saw the line in these comments.
"Will's not a coat that hang in the closet and pick up when you're ready to wear it, his life goes on." True words right there. This is to every parent that has a child or more and doesn't see them. Children aren't there for you, you're supposed to be there for them. You don't just come around when you feel like you're ready to.
That's it right there! One thing about me, is that I'm always there for my 2 kids, cause I love them to death & they are EXTREMELY happy, that they have an awesome father in their lives!
That's how I feel about my gf's ex with her son.

Good parents who care for their children usually end up having children who in turn care about them. My parents may not be perfect, but I know they did the absolute best they could raising me, and I care deeply for them. The “To hell with him!” and “How come he don’t want me man?” Makes me cry every time growing up without a father isn’t easy

Damn well put
Oh dude.
That was insightful
Wow, great :o
Of course he can still give to his father, you know the one that was there for him when he needed it.
Ben Vereen’s delivery of “It was great seeing you son.” To me it carries so much. It’s a sincere goodbye from somebody who loves his son but just doesn’t know how to be a dad. I always got the sense he probably ran away from everything in his life when things to real. Ben Vereen did a hell of a job here.
Lou is a perfect example of deadbeat father. My dad is similar to him, mine was abusive and had a crazy temper though. I got lucky though since my grandfather was similar to Uncle Phil. Taught me wisdom and patience. My grandfather has had a tough life and despite all that he went through he’s still the nicest and best man I know.
Superbly acted. One of the best acted scenes of all time by those 3.
The response Will gives immediately after is excellent as well. "You too. Lou." There's just the briefest pause where you can see him hesitate, and then you watch him decide that "dad" isn't worth saying anymore. And he notices it, visibly, but still turns and walks away.
@@kizikucalegon8673 Like THAT is the moment he could have stopped and thought. THAT is the moment he could have salvaged their relationship. He WAS given ONE last chance RIGHT THEN, RIGHT THERE and he DROPPED IT.
He just wanted his dad to be there for him, man. Was that too much to ask for?
They all deserved Emmys
As great as Will’s performance is in this scene, for some reason it’s always when James Avery (uncle Phil) confronts Lou that makes my hair stand on edge. Avery speaks to Lou as if he’s looking right through him, and talking to every absent father that didn’t have the courage to stick by his family like a real man. In that moment, he wasn’t acting. He was preaching. RIP Mr. Avery.

*Will, it's alright to be angry*. One of my favorite parts, because many times we are told anger is bad and/or never to get angry, when it's exactly in times like this that sadness and/or anger (handled correctly of course) are the healthiest response. Will was furious at Lou (he doesn't deserve to be called a father), and Uncle Phil told him it was alright. 🥲 RIP James Avery ❤
Exactly. Sometimes anger is the only response you can give and that's alright. It's an emotion everyone has gotta feel every once in a while
I love that it's silent for that hug. We all need an Uncle Phil
We all need an uncle Phil.

I agree. No audience going "awww". You don't need a prompt to tell you how to feel. It undercuts the emotion of a scene.

I swear, casting James Avery as Uncle Phil was brilliant.
Rip
A brilliant actor. May he rest in peace.
The story goes when Avery came in to audition for the part Will was sitting slouched and with his feet up (basically how he is in the early seasons of the show) and Avery told him to sit up straight and put his feet down. Will and the producers of the show immediately knew Avery was the man for the part and he didn't disappoint.
Most of the younger actors on the show have said in interviews that Avery was like a second father to them and really helped them to better in life and as actors
That's very true, he was the best for the role, no-one else would have been right for it

Agreed and This Scene is So Powerful!
It’s not only Will’s delivery, it’s also the way Uncle Phil listens to his pain and the physical response he has to it. He’s hurting because Will is hurting. The delivery was so raw!

I heard Ben Vereen the one who played Will’s dad. This was a very hard role for him to take because in real life he’s a real dedicated father. He couldn’t imagine doing this to his own kids.
I heard the same, he was balling off-set during the rest of this scene :(
I've read that during the first taping of the scene, Will was stumbling over words, so the director called 'cut' so the last line wouldn't get spoiled. James Avery then pulled Will to give him a pep talk about how to act in this scene, advising to look into his eyes as he's talking to Phil. Then, when Phil and Will are hugging, Avery whispered into Will's ear "That's fucking acting, right there." God bless James Avery for being a great mentor.
You've listened to the audiobook as well 😂
I just commented this on Facebook!
Wills father never left... he's right there, putting his arms around him
A dad isn't defined as the man who makes the child, but rather the man who extends his hands and time to help with the child's raising and his heart to love the child through anything! BLOOD doesn't always make a man a dad, being a DAD comes from the heart
That’s right!
Ngl That made me cry
@@johnycruz4249 well said, excellent explanation. 👏👏👏👍👍👍
“He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy.”
The millisecond will said "Lou" Is when all respect went out the window
When he called him Lou I knew he knew he lost his father for good.
When he said that,it shows that he really lost his father to the point where he don't even wants to call him "Dad" anymore
I could see the change in Will's face the moment Lou said that some business came up. Any shred of Will's respect for Lou, gone.
That's right. He never lost his father. He simply learned who his true one was.

This scene hits HARD. My father chose his mistress and her child over his family. He has spent every day since making it clear that my brother and I are not worth anywhere near as much as his new family. He didn't take care of us when we visited him (including not letting us eat or drink properly); all he and his new family did was make us feel like a nuisance ruining their perfect life, only useful as a tool to hurt my mother.
This is the man who bought my stepsister a damn house last year and gave me a book on making money. I wish I was making it up. Even as adults, nothing we could ever do is good enough for him.
The neglect, psychological, emotional and at times physical abuse is something I'm still working through. One thing is sure though, I will never EVER let my children, should I have any, feel unwanted or a burden.
Stop trying to live up to his expectation and stop calling him "my father". He's not your father; he is just a sperm donor. You and your brother are your mom's sons and that's all it matters. You are here because you are destined to be here. You are here to make a positive difference to this world. You are here to make your mom and yourselves proud. That's all you need to remember.
Ab, your father doesn’t deserve you in the least. Stop trying to make him proud when it’s YOU that you need to make proud. Don’t strive for his acceptance: he’s never going to give it to you, and you don’t need it. You’re good enough as you are, your mom raised you right, and I’d even go as far as to say that if you ever need to put your father on blast whenever you see him, don’t be afraid to do so: you don’t need permission to do that, you’re an adult and he’s a piece of crap who never grew up knowing what it means to love or to be human!
You were awesome then and you still are today, and don’t you ever forget that. We’re here for you, and we always will be. When a person is bad, that person has to be taught a lesson, that’s my motto.

When a son calls you by your first name.
You're done. You can no longer make up for anything that you have done in your life. That's what a lot of people don't know. Everyone broke character that day.
Or you don't even name him by his name either. Living that life. Just old man
I cant even begin how to pronounce your name guy above me, but I'm sure your father was a great man. From many of our experiences naming your dad by his first name isn't a good sign so that's how we come to that conclusion. Personally I'd find it so weird calling my dad by his first name, however that is my own experhence and only aplicable to me and others of the same experience
I call my dad by his first name all the time and he’s a great dad lmao
Daniel Hill same I call he by his first name as a joke lol
I gotta agree with you man... My mom had my older brother before she met my dad and he didnt really like my brother so he told him to call him by his name rather than "dad" but it caught on to us too when he had us... Ive tried calling him dad bc its just normal like that... But it isnt for me and my siblings
This is seriously one of the best moments in television history. I still cry years later watching this
I'm in tears watching this. No real man, no decent man, abandons or ignores their children, their flesh and blood. Only worthless scumbags walk out on their kids. My dad did this, and it just makes me even more determined to be there for my daughter, to be the kind of dad I didn't have; kind, loving, present.
Fun fact: Ben Vereen who played Will’s father, cried bitterly after he walked off screen because he’s a father and he couldn’t imagine walking on his kids. He took it to heart. This scene is one of the greatest in television history. ❤
Hearing that really hurts the heart. But I agree. I'm sitting here tearing up over this scene after all these years. People ask who is the best TV dad like it's even a question. It's always been Uncle Phil. He was a role model to me. And I'm sure he's a role model to many others. He made me realize that the greatest thing you can do in this life is be a father if you're a man.

Everyone in this scene had amazing performances, obviously Will and Phil, but Lou’s look of shame and the way he can’t even say goodbye is amazing.
Even Viv’s jaded attitude is done perfectly, she’s already done even trying to talk to him because she’s known Lou since Will was born
I suspect Lou's obvious shame was in large part the actor's very real emotions coming through. Ben Vereen was a father in real life and cried once he got off the set because he couldn't imagine walking out on his own kids. It's another example of just how powerful the scene really is.

Uncle Phil told Will that it's alright to be angry and he's 100% correct. When Phil grabbed Will to hug and console him, that was such a tender and loving moment. Phil's action was like, you're father is not here for you but I always will be. I later became a father to five kids and I never left them. I was there for each one of them. I vowed to never be like my father because I know the pain it causes when you have a father that is absent in your life.

@@ggethvh3414 idk how r u and idk if you’ll see this but I understand. PLEASE know you are not useless. You ARE loved and loveable, stay strong. I have no clue what to say really, my dad left before I was old enough to remember his face, I’ve spent my life without him and it still hurts to know that he left me and he’ll never look me in the eyes and tell me why.
But this scene brings a good point, you made it this far without a father and you didn’t need him to teach you anything you’ve got this (with or without them), just because that man isn’t around doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough, it just means that THEY weren’t good enough for YOU.
My father wasent in my life for 10 years 😭 he walked out of my life for a relationship 😭 this gave me a huge flashback😭 but thank God he came back to my life and asked for my forgiveness 😭 I didn't want to forgive him but I had to...bc he still my father😭

I always hated it whenever sitcoms use cheap dramatic music during emotional scenes. Fresh Prince allows the emotion to speak for itself.
Me Too and This Scene is So Powerful!

Sweet This Show Lots of Drama For a Sitcom!
i think you are thinking of dramas..
This was a tear jerking scene
Shout out to the real fathers out here!!!!
Last time I saw my dad was 21 years ago. Reconnected and he ghosted me last April. Looked this up because I needed a good cry I guess.
No one should ever have to ask why their father don't want them.
Some of us aren’t that lucky to not have to :(
Word man, I was that kid myself. Not every parent deserves their kid. 💯
After 40 years I am starting to realize that I needed a father and I still need
I'm lucky to have a dad but my brother don't I hate that bastard with every inch of my gut but its let me kinda be a father for my baby brother I taught him everything he knows

"Ain't a damn thing he could ever teach me about how to love my kids."
Dude, this is some outstanding writing. Like seriously, this is a TV SITCOM.
He improvised, he got emotional because his dad left him too when he was young. What you're seeing is real.

The hardest part for me, having dealt with a parent who didn't care, is when that paper thin charade of anger turns to sadness.
3:38 That look on Uncle Phil's face. That's the look of someone who hates seeing someone he loves in pain. Not physical pain, emotional pain. And he doesn't know what to do or say. But then, Will says it...
"How come he don't want me, man?"
Uncle Phil then knew what he needed to do. He pulled in Will for a hug, reassuring Will there was someone who did want him and cared for him. And Uncle Phil was never gonna leave him.
When he screamed out, "The hell with him!" his acting reached a new level
Leo Gatz absolutely spot on
this whole scene was improv
improv: the actor makes up his on line
i swear i didnt know this was all improv, i really thought this was the script, my goodness
U guys do know that this wasn’t improv...he literally didn’t have his father in real life, he was caught in the moment and it triggered his real life
Actually this was a script, he got caught up in the moment of talking about fathers and he remembered how his real dad wasn't there. Also, Corey quit commenting shit that isn't true man.
Watching this in 2024 and I’m Balling my eyes out 😢

“You too... Lou”.
The moment when Will’s father was officially dead to him. The disappointment within his voice can explain it all.
Phil on his worst day is a better father than Lou on his best day.
Eeyup.
The actor for Lou said he had to leave the set when Will said that to him, cuz he imagined his kids saying that to him and it made him cry.
It's hard to have a "best day" when you weren't there. Lol
@Leonardo Cesana A common misconception. No Will Smith's father never left him, and was always supportive of his son's career choices. Will Smith was however crying for real due to becoming overwhelmed by the subject matter and his performance and James Avery, not uncle Phil the character, James Avery actually was hugging him in comfort.
@@zenith8417 wait Fr ? wow
I love how Uncle Phil was just standing there and letting Will vent his anger and grabbed him when he started crying. 4:08
Sadly the reality for so many black young men. Uncle Phil is who a lot of the youth need in their life sadly most don’t have one.

My father made my mother and i go through depression, my mind is still messed up to this day. My mom and i left him bc he wasnt a good husband or father. Its been nine years and he hasnt come by to see me, he has never came over to say happy birthday to me. But i finally gotten a dad which was my stepfather but he died a few years ago. I lost my real father, the one that is dead IS my REAL father. He restored my mother and i. I never gotten to say goodbye to him or say thank you for all that he has done for me. But he made me into who i am to this day and i love him sooooo much for it. Thank you. Have a good day everyone
When they are embracing, James Avery whispered "now that's fucking acting" in Will's ear
Uncle phil truly did love Will
I love how realistic Will’s dad is portrayed. He’s not an idiot or evil guy. He’s just a bad father. The conversation between Uncle Phil and Will’s father is so realistic.
well, he could still be considered evil. just not with a strong intent for it. he's a flake, a narcissist. and i agree, it's very real.
@@camelat7228 that’s not really evil. That’s just a flawed a human being. I’m a father and I’ve noticed how easy it is to be a bad dad. There are so many times where so was selfish and avoided my responsibilities but my family, friends, and partner made sure that I was fulfilling my duties as a Dad. If I didn’t have that support system, I could have easily just ran away. It’s important to remember that anyone can be a bad parent. You just have to try.
