MIke Mangini Untethered Angel Replay

  • This is a replay of the song from my studio. It does not seem like it would be in a top 10 "difficult" songs to play, except when anyone, me included, tries to play every note in the exact right place in time- no stopping. This isn't perfect. It's close. Most people understand this and like me, just try to get better looking forward, not behind. I'm enjoying my classes because I'm finally able to share with people what's going on to backbone the band. The body movements from left to right are brutal. It is difficult to hit hard and in time while the trunk of the body switches sides so much. The feet are switching sides per key signature and other musical changes. The cymbal choices change with the music notes and register changes. The toms follow the riff's ascending or descending direction.

    As someone who watched pretty much every MM video in existence, I am still impressed with how easy he makes this song look. You can never know how difficult anything he plays is until you try to play it and you realize your body has to be perfectly in tune with itself to make it sound decent. Mangini's playing is pure quality.

      @danlc95 Před 2 lety +3

      I joined a new band where I get to play some adventurous parts.
      One of which has me following the lead guitar at the conclusion of the solo. I do a sextuplet run starting from the 12" tom, to the snare, to the 14" floor tom, to the 10" rack tom. It exposed the lack of conditioning to my abdominal core. I had to build up the strength to execute that part effectively. It also has me questioning further use of my Roc N Soc Nitro Throne, because it easily swivels from side to side, requiring even more muscular assistance from the core.
      Later in thay song is another sextuplet fill where I'm hitting my ride cymbal bell on the second set. Getting my arm to go back and forth between my second rack tom and the ride bell took some getting used to as well.
      Mike obviously has all this down to a T! But I've honestly been coasting the past few years.

      This is literally pretty simple and straightforward

    • @Proghead88
      @Proghead88 Před 10 měsíci

      @scylla4342 the point is that it is harder to make it sound good no matter how simple you think it is because every note must be played with very precise touch, technique and consistency, on top of ensuring every part of your body is aware and in tune with every movement to ensure that sound and also avoid long term injury. This is just a small example. Look at Mangini's entire drumming career and you'll know it's not that simple.

    Mike Mangini, still phenomenal!! I'll never forget back in the days of the Music Complex, I'm just this broke ass drummer with a pieced together kit and my 14" tom kept falling on my kick because the mount was trash.
    One afternoon, I'm just chilling in room 414 when I hear a loud crash in the hall. I come out and see a cart loaded pretty much to the ceiling with drum cases and all, some of which are on the floor now. I'm like " You good, man?" When Mike pops his head out from behind the cart with a huge smile.
    "I think I could use a hand." HA
    I didn't even know who you were at the time, I ended up helping you out with an instructional video you had to shoot at the studio a few days later and you hooked me up with the part for my tom to stop denting my kick!! I'm pretty sure my jaw was on the floor the entire time at the studio!!

    Man I don't understand how you can play this drum kit comfortably. Always reaching so far just to play the HiHats.... wild.
    Awesome playing as usual though and love the double bass parts!

    • @nixneato
      @nixneato Před 3 lety +4

      In dotted 16th notes, filled up by 2 kicks in 32nd notes. That one is a bitch to follow against the 4/4 click. Which the bass plays btw, but of course 5 groups of 3s (otherwise it's no fun). And incidentally, that explains why they all end on the last beat of bar 4 (the 16th beat, thus) and why Mike starts his 2-bar roll on the next beat, which cues the solo section. Awesome stuff...

    • @nixneato
      @nixneato Před 3 lety

      @@Proghead88 Oh bro I could have gone on and on, like MM and JM lining up every 3 beats, which would equal a full "paradiddle" by Mike, i.e. 4 dotted 16ths... Or how it plays against the JP and JR unison.
      So many ways to look at it, and each one contributes to your grasping the concept, and ability to play it against a click or another musician.
      I actually practice that thing with one hand, the other one playing the quarter notes on two cymbals (two because beat 1 is one cymbal, beats 2, 3 and 4 are the other one, like a click really. The way god intended :P)

    • @Proghead88
      @Proghead88 Před 3 lety +2

      @@nixneato yeah using cymbals is a great way to hear the quarter notes precisely. Also very fun to get into one-handed Mangini mode lol. Doing it the original way takes some good focus to land on that 4th beat of the last bar and feel it properly.

      @@Proghead88 Haha yes this one isn't too busy hand-wise so you can catch a break for once :D
      Totally agree with you: it is two very different things to actually play the time reference, or to not play it and only "count in your head".
      I'm trying to do both, and actually started playing the cymbals to help my stupid brain :)

      in the description he says "The feet are switching sides per key signature and other musical changes." I wonder it is done to add more layering to the sound as left and right are bound to hit slightly differently
