ZOOM Q2N and Q2N4K comparison

  • Hey everyone! I received the ZOOM Q2N 4K last night and did some tests compared to the Q2N in 1080. There is a huge improvement in the picture quality but is not as sharp as a 4K from a camera with a $1000 lens or even the OSMO mobile, which I also tested in this kind of lighting. The Q2N was not very good at color whereas the Q2N 4K was more accurate although slightly more saturated than real life. There are more shooting modes, including an option for a flat color profile. In low light testing, I feel the flat profile looked way less saturated but I struggled to color grade without introducing a bunch of noise. I will try to do more in depth analysis for you in an upcoming video. I hope you will find this video somewhat helpful in your decision to purchase this camera.
    The sound quality is the main selling point and video quality is the second selling point. For a spot camera in a shoot, this will do a great job although tethering it to a USB power source is highly recommended because it will eat through your AA's in one hour at 4K mode.
    I should mention there is a subtle difference in the sound of the piano towards the end with the 4K model. It's more present and full. There cameras are also sitting on top of the piano!

    Awesome Comparison, thank you! :) Do you know if the 4K uses more megapixel on 1080 mode, or is it the same? Like, if you shoot with both on 1080 in the first place, is the 4k still sharper like in this example?

    Thanks. Please more tests for different settings. My goal is Zoom Q2N-4K for live recording of drums and percussion. I hope i can use all kind of GoPro hardware to attach it to stands etc.. In the studio i think of using high quality microphones and a mixer and make a ready to go video at once using the line/stereo-input of the Zoom Q2N-4K . Normally i have to do a lot of editing and mixing in a DAW and edit the high quality studio audio in the video of a normal digital camera. Of course carefull mixing gives best sound quality but ...have some mixer presets for quick drumlesson video´s will give probably better audio than just the Zoom Q2N-4K stereo mic (overheads, snare and kick and play along and perhaps even more quality mics)

    Thanks for the video. I was hoping someone would do a comparison between the two. I have the older Q2N and considered going to the 4K version. But they omitted something from the new version I really need. The only scene setting that gives me decent video, in the place I use it most is the "Concert Hall" setting. On the 4K version they did away with that setting. So I doubt the new version would really work for me.

      @westsiderecordingstudio4086  Před 5 lety +3

      The names of the presets are similar yet have very looks side by side since the Q2n4K preserves highlights better. I put it in the back of an auditorium and was able to record in the high contrast situation without blowing out the stage and kept the shadow detail in the audience. It's definitely something different that need more experimentation.

    Oh gosh, everyone here seems so convinced by the 4k yet I'm still wondering if the price difference is worth it... I'm clueless with jargon, so could you please tell me if you used only the camera's own mic for this, or did you plug it into a desk? We record church services weekly to produce dvds, would you recommend any one of these as an upgrade from the Sony SR40?
    Can you record for longer than an hour in any one of these? I'm sorry about all these questions but I could REALLY use the help! Thank you very much!

      I used the camera's built in mic and not plugged into anything else. You should plug it into a desk if you are recording at a distance and want clean sermons. You can plug USB power into it and record for longer than an hour with a 256GB memory card no problem.

    What is the Actual color of the drum kit? TheQ2N give it the appearance of Silver. The 4K shows gold. Which is it. That will say alot about the cameras. Thanks

    • @westsiderecordingstudio4086
      @westsiderecordingstudio4086  Před 5 lety +1

      The actual color is silver, that being said, the color of the lights were not white. Kind of like the warmer tones of light can make a white piece of paper look warm white, the reflectivity of silver tends to be tint. The Q2N is doing a hard white balance, identifying the paper as white and making it look whiter than it does in person where the Q2N4K is making the sheet music on the drummer's music stand look like colored lights are shining on it. Also you can see more detail on the music stand where the Q2N looks more overblown. Thanks for the question!

    • @TanTruong100
      @TanTruong100 Před 5 lety +1

      The 4K model shows colors a little bit more accurately since the lighting was not really blue but a magenta hue. 4K does crush the blacks a little more in the dark for sure.

    • @westsiderecordingstudio4086
      @westsiderecordingstudio4086  Před 5 lety +2

      I share your observation. It's the shadows that appear cleaner but at the expense of dynamic range. The highlights are blown out on the Q2n. Overall, there are ways to clean up the noise in the post. The highlights, and overall resolution are improved but the noise suppression can be improved. I should test it in the other modes to see if they all share the same noise issues in similar lighting situations

    • @Grunfeld
      @Grunfeld Před 5 lety +2

      I also thought that from these comparisons. I saw on another review that the old Q2n stops down to f2 whereas the newer Q2n4k only goes to f2.8 (might have been 2.3).
