  • Today I go outdoors with my Hasselblad 501cm film camera and a roll of Portra 160 film. I start the day feeling uneasy and anxious, but things soon turn around and my mental health improves once I start engaging with the landscape. I encounter a heavy snow storm as I enjoy some landscape photography. I am forever being drawn to the smaller, more intimate scenes and images. This video demonstrates that not everything needs to be a big, epic view.

I sympathise. Last summer I went out walking a lot, but the recent bad weather has kept me indoors and even though the weather was fine today, I made excuses and didn't go out for a walk. I think I'm going to have to reintroduce myself to the outdoors very gently, like returning a creature to the wild after it's been in captivity for too long.

Appreciate your emotional honesty. Being in lockdown makes me feel like I’m not accomplishing anything (Ontario, Canada). Take care.

For me, that sense of agitation is common in the early part of an outing and I know that it will eventually be relieved when nature reveals the shot to me. Having the freedom to be out in nature is fundamental to my well-being and being able to do that even if it's just a hobby is something that many around the world can't right now. You actually are in a better place than you think when you're feeling that agitation, just by the fact that you caught yourself feeling it. Most just get caught up and taken for the ride. Take a deep breath, appreciate the moment around you, don't run from the feeling, accept it, and know that like all things "this too shall pass." And it does.

Loved the sheep photo. I totally agree about photography and getting outdoors helps your mental health. I don’t what I would do without it. These videos are a great escape during lockdown, thanks so much! 👍

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us Thomas. I agree that photography, especially film, really keeps you present and participating in the moment. It's personally helped me a lot with mental health and overcoming nasty dark depressing thoughts. Just appreciating the simple things [you are not alone with the grass in snow- I call them freshly shaved ;) ] is absolutely a practice and is valuable in times of despair. If you can love something so simple then it becomes easier to see all the good than the bad over time. Live simply, love simply I guess!

That shot with the sheep is stunning simply stunning.

Thomas, thanks for getting out in the snow and doing these videos. You have inspired me to do more landscapes with longer lenses and to look for square crops. I am finding so much fun with the new focus on composition.

I took a photo of grass coming through the snow the other day on 6x6 portrayals film as well. I thought it a trite when I took it, but I like the shot. So Im glad not the only one that thinks these things are worth capturing. The last sheep photo is amazing. The shape of the trees, the line of sheep, and negative space really work well together.

Couldn‘t agree more with your statements about the outdoors and how nature affects our mood and mind! Love your on-location videos, especially with analog film - the pictures reflect the honesty and calm of your videos very well - not everything has to be super epic-HDR-gigapixel like. A simple beautiful well composed image outways all „modern“ superlatives! Keep it going and good light!

Right back at your best - can see the difference that something unexpected made to your eye and mood. Nothing wrong with getting excited at grass in snow - I first did 49 years ago and still do now, even by proxy! Cheers 👍👍👍

Thank you for talking about your inner feelings openly, Thomas, and I think I know how you were feeling. Even as an introvert the lockdowns are getting to me at last, and I have a lot of days now when I just feel like whatever I do, I should be doing something else. It's a strange restlessness that's really hard to pin down.
Loved your film shots from this day! The sheep image was a beautifully clean composition. Also there was some great texture on that pond ice.

Thank you Thomas for another great video and for sharing your experiences with lockdown and how you feel being outdoors. Hopes it motivates me to go out more too. The image of the wiggly sticks is my favorite.

Seriously Thomas, to me this is one of your best video's I've seen. Love the slower pace, the thoughts and honesty. Well done. Oh, and the sheep was the best shot.

Thank you for the video, and I fully empathize. There are moments when I'm shooting that doubt and uncertainty enter the picture, I mentally tell myself why I'm at that location, what I'm attempting to accomplish, and force any negative thoughts from my mind. Love your videos!
