The XR 1200 performed so well, that Harley, quietly dropped it from their lineup.
Pretty mechanically inclined. Good one.
I just bought one of these (great bike by the way) and it took me about ten seconds to put the filler cap back in. All you got to do is face the forward part forwards.
How has the reliability been?
@@Spartansrule118 Pretty good. Had it 12 years now and only issues have been the breather hoses from the cylinder heads going brittle and leaking. Replaced them twice before putting in some thicker ones from the autoparts store. Apparently it is a common issue
@@plxsfy Wow, that's awesome. I can't believe you owned the bike for 12 years, and that you replied to your comment made 12 years ago and that I got to read it! 😂 What a trip. I live in Japan and just bought a 2011 XR1200X with 6000 miles. Never ridden in the rain! I just downloaded the complete service manual and have been reading through it. I'm pleased to hear you've had only minor issues in all this time. Will be my first Harley after a long line of interesting Japanese bikes.
Ok. I have the xr1200x. The fuel cap is very similar to the engine oil cap on many jet engines. It is not that complicated to use. But then I work on jet engines every day.
Nice review, thanks for posting this.
I like that gauge layout on the XR.
i never really took the xr1200's seriously until last week when me and my mate riding along both on supersports saw one warming up his tyres which was an odd sight then when we hit the back roads he absolutely ripped
You are wrong here, the motorcycle shaft drive needs about same maintenance effort as the belt drive. You have to check it, control the oil level and exchange the oil regularly in about same intervals as you check the belt for wear and tightness. For the second part, you are here the one sadly mistaken, I didnt say OHV is SAME technology as DOHC, I said that its SAME OLD technology!
fighting with a Aircraft gas cap, SMH! That cap is the exact same one you find on personal aircraft.
I was about to go buy one until you mentioned the gas cap lol ... you for real lol
I have the same gas cap on my Dyna and I had the same problem at first until I quickly figured it out. All you have to do is line up the tabs before you put it back on.
Hi can you please give the spec's of this handlebar height and width? The original handlebar dimensions. And where can I buy the original one? Thanks
I don´t undersatand how you guys made this mess with de fuel cap...it´s really simple! Nice video at all! =D
So as far as complaints go I'm hearing, needs more power to front brakes, and a complicated gas cap issue. Is there anything else?
Thats sweet, my friends dad just bought a solid black model of one of these. It reminds me of the batman motorcycle in the Dark Knight...Pretty tight.
hey buddy how tall are u and did u find it comfy
Where did you guys film this video?
Got to get me one of these. ASAP
@mps63 It's based off the XR750 which was made well before Buell was around. I'm sad about Buell too, but you don't help your case when you don't know what you're talking about!
I am having a problem with my 2004 Harley Davidson FLSTCI motorcyle when throttling up in 2nd and 3rd gears the throttle sticks. Has anyone had this problem with theirs nd if so do you know what it is and how to fix it?
So it is better to buy the Griso?

It has a sequential port injection....twin cam....
both of you guys are kind of right the belt is made out of kevlar and nylon and will last a long time but still needs maintenance while a drive shaft has virtually no maintenance it weighs more and on the comment of a push rod Harley being the same technology as a DOHC In-line four you are sadly mistaken
The gas cap system is pretty much the standard for any power plant in airplanes, boats, truck worldwide. Insanely complicated…
WHAT ABOUT THE GRISO?????
@cccjjjttt You should check out the night rod special, then. Maybe more up your alley. Give it a look!
Why does everyone always fight over Harley vs. sport bikes? It's all about preference and performance. I personally don't mind cruising for hours on my little Ninja 250. And I also got to try the slightly larger Sportster 1250 a day ago. The handling was different, the posture, hell the overall feel. But does that make it any better? No. The type of bike you ride is sorta about personality, I feel. I still don't get why Harley-only riders often don't return a wave when I'm on the Ninja.
like full leather from Kawasaki, nice neon green color full of sponsor patches...., is it that what you mean?
You are Better off getting a Buell Ulysses XB12X, last one were made by Harley Davidson 2009. Awesome Bike !!
That's what I have.
i like harley xr1200 fullspeed
@robietrav Yeah loud doesn't =fast
well another pyle of myths. HD belt drive usually helds around 100k miles, Chain set around 12.5k. The costs of a new belt is around 200USD the cost of average chain kit is around 180USD, now its a simple math you fail in. Abut energy, around 20-30% energy produced by engine is absorbed by engine moving parts, another around 20-35% by gearbox and final drive with wheel. Im working in automotive for over 20 years to know that shaft drive is rubbing more power. Weight is not width.
the engine loudness doesnt have anything to do with exhaust sound. Stock Harley is much quieter then stock in-line four due to DB killers in pipe. Free flowing pipe on in-line four doing 12-14000 rpm must have much much higher db rate then free flowing Harley doing 5000rpm. In-line four DOHC is same old technology as the Harley OHV pushrod engine. Anything else HD is "high tech" in cruiser market, in fact HD is the tech leader in this segment. OHV is more fuel efficient design then OHC.
These guys should be embarrassed to have included the "insanely complex gas cap" footage. Not much different from most other caps on similar bikes. Just bought a 2009 (in late 2020) and it is a fantastic bike!
I ride that XR since July 2008, fine bike.
Those 2 peewees that fiddle with the gascap are clumsy, I wonder how they earn their living.
wow, what an intelligent answer. Out of arguments? You can always call someone a fool....
The XR1200 is very heavy, around 250kg dry. Compare that to a GSXR600 which has more power and about 80kg less weight.
Griso please, kkthnx.
well you better stay in same class bike, that would be the Honda CB1100 with 89HP on crank and 248kg DRY!. The Gixxer would have hard time to pass XR1200 in curvy mountain roads like deals gap. it lacks of torque makes Gixxer much slower out of the curve.
@MunkyBuis
first of all, on the street 600cc 4 cylinders are as fast as 1200cc buells. please check out the frames, heads, cams, tires, ect........... the buell is a far better design than a sportster. i was going to get my son an 883 sporty for his first bike. it is an excellent starter bike. but, i guess i am pissed harley half ass did something that they really needed!!!
@SuperBeatnuts
I ride a cbr600 and find your comment to be ignorant.
Sounds like he was describing a Buell :)
HEHEHE You should not have put the segment about the gas cap! A child can put it in in 5 seconds! LOL Good comedy moment, though! Cheers!
I own this bike, and I think it's amazing, but all other specs aside the gas cap...I don't think you deserve a job...anywhere. It's not complicated at all...seriously I saw this review before I bought the bike and tried the gas cap, first go I got it...it's really simple......
@EpiDemic117 "doesn't matter if you buy this one or not, Harley killed it's only good division which was buell. They should of taken all their racing knowledge from the past and start making modern race bikes. But they are STUCK IN THE PAST! they refuse to move forward!"
very true but they still sell like hotcakes because everyone still has a soft spot for rugged old school style and muscle sounds. Technology wise yes harleys are way out of date. But they are still awesome bikes.
the cap was upside down, dingle-berry
is he afghan?
Your pronunciation isn't very good, Guzzi is pronounced Gutsi, a motorcycle manufacturer is a Marque, not a Marquee, that is a type of tent.
There's no point in arguing with fools....
for about double the price of this sportster.... must be kidding right?
@bigmuddybronco, you do realize the Destroyer is a $32,000 special built drag bike that is not street legal? While any BONE STOCK Hayabusa or ZX14 will bounce it's ass off a drag strip, especially if you strap a 6' wheelie bar to the back of it.
you showed your poor Harley knowledge with that Goldwing staement. FLHTCU with TC103 is on pair with GL1800 in performance, slightly better in cornering (almost hard to notice), much better in riding comfort, has better audio and the best its about 3-5000 cheaper then GL1800 (depends on country). The GL1800 will still have higher maintenance costs about 15-25% higher and has lower mileage then FLHTCU. You are another anti HD troll, period!
It still is a heavy, old tech motorcycle; If that's what you want to spend your money on-fine... If you want a bike that is a total BLAST to ride, whether aggressive canyon carving, sport touring,or blasting possers in leather chaps and german helmets (lol!) get a BMW 1200GS!
@roydied15 If you need a motorcycle just to get your girl off then that's pretty bad man lmao
15 minutes.......read the owners manual, fool
If you're struggling to put the gas cap on an XR1200 then for the love of God...don't ever do any mechanical work on a bike. Jeesh.
wtf is that
Even the brits think Harley is better xD
Harley sucks ass and a waste of money. INDIAN FTR 1200.
