  • Nez Perce historians Allen V. Pinkham and Steven Ross Evans have examined the journals of Lewis and Clark with painstaking care to tease out new insights from what the explorers wrote about their Nez Perce hosts. Pinkham and Evans evaluate both what Lewis and Clark understood and what they misunderstood in the Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) lifeway and political structure. More particularly they have re-examined the journals for clues about how the Nez Perce reacted to the bearded strangers. They have also gathered together and put into print for the first time the strands of a surprisingly rich Nez Perce oral tradition. Presence of the Past Program Series, May 12, 2016

Another good book about the Nez Perce is called Dreamers, by Martin Stadius. The title was taken from the name of the Dreamer religion that the Wanapum chief Smoholla started, and spread to many of the plateau tribes, characterized by the distinct hairstyle of its adherents. Anyway, he documents a road trip he took that virtually follows the trail of the Nez Perce retreat, from Wallowa to Bear Paw. He outlines what happened in each battle that was fought along the way, along with his personal feelings given at each stop. Very good read.

My dad Bill Swan was born in Grangevill in 1917 and he ran away and lived on the Nez peace reservation at age 12 he grew up and made statues like Paul Bunyan,Ford Mustang horse and several other iconic fiberglass he also drew pictures and made wood carvings that were mostly cowboys and Indians he had a lot of respect for the Indians. His wood carvings were once in Asotin county museum but my mom took them out to make sure they would be divided between kids but she passed and carvings disappeared so we have been looking for them every since .
There is a short ebook about dad and his life that lead up to statues called "The man behind the mufflerman " for 14.99

I live smack dab in the middle of umatilla tribal council lands. Nez perce bought back lands in Joseph Oregon from a church. Last I heard was bringing Chief Joseph home. A lot of us, with the " nee poo " helped. I honestly don't think they should have had to buy 180 acres back from a church. But that same church helped raise money. But still 😔. We need to learn native history, we need to learn, it's their land, learn their ways. Love and nourish mother nature. Don't take but give back💕

Interesting about Wm Clark having a son, what About all the other men of the corp of discovery? Any evidence that wasn’t that prominent about the regulars, having offsprings.

I have a book by Bill Gulick entitled "Chief Joseph Country" which has a picture of Capt. William Clark's son. His Indian name was either Daylight Smoke or Always Smoking. He kind of looks like Geronimo in the photo. He would have been about 71 years old when the Nez Perce war was going on, and he survived it, but died in Oklahoma soon after the tribe was exiled there, so his remains are in Oklahoma, unless they have been moved to the Northwest.

I’am 75 and lived in Lewiston in the 50s and 60s and racism directed toward the niimpuu/ Nez Perce was pervasive. I can recall the hatred clearly to this day and my sadness is profound.

I'm sorry to hear of your sadness. I hope and pray that one day we will live in a world where racism is an ancient relic of the past. Thankfully this awful attitude is becoming less prevalent with the younger generations. May you be at peace.

CZcams: "Tout du le Long Voyage", by Genticorum. I think mutual love of music was huge in the early relationship between the Tribe and early visitors.. a happy chapter..
