    I used to work here with the late Chef Eng Su, founder of The Coconut Club. The amount of R&D, effort, and thought that he put into this dish cannot be put into words. I'm glad that the recipe is in safe hands and its flavour is still upheld by the new restaurant group that bought over.

      Maybe I got an off plate but when I went a month ago it tasted so bad. The chicken was super oily and salty, marination was kind of mediocre, rice wasn’t very lemak, ikan bills wasn’t freshly cooked. Beef rendang was SOOOOOTOUGH.

    took the words out of my mouth! after learning abt the amount of study and work behind the dish and more importantly how it feels in the mouth, its reasonable enough to recommend to fans of nasi lemak despite the price it asks for. will return once in a while for a treat. gotta get their sambal platter too!

    iirc, Coconut club uses GG French Poulet which is aka Anxin Chicken from Toh Thye San farm. The chickens are fed with corn diet, which by itself already have a slight yellow on the bone even without any seasoning or marination done on it.

  • @stan_ong
    @stan_ong Před 3 měsíci +4

    Hmm, what I think you missed in this series was the true essence of Nasi lemak without all the frills - a simple, cheap packet of coconut rice, with sambal, egg, ikan bilis and maybe some peanuts and cucumber…and always in banana leaf.
    Also, while all roads may lead to village park…look closer and you’ll find a secret narrow path, off the beaten track, to a makcik’s small stall in a kampung where nasi lemak heaven hides.
    Find that path.

    Great review!
    Very in line with my own views about Coconut Club.
    Great basic nasi lemak set.
    Rice is solid with great sambal.
    I actually think buying any of their side dishes spoils the experience for me. Not that the sides are terrible or what.
    But the sides are for the bringing-your-european-client-out-for-posh-local-food occasions.
    If ure just there alone or on a date. I feel its perfect just to have the basic set. Extra rice if u need to top up. And the kuehs. (Cakes there always look awesome too).

    "The coconut fragrance is so full. There are two aspects to adding coconut milk to rice. One is the "lemakness and two is the fragrance, and this rice scores so high in both aspects.
    We had plenty of very fragrant coconut rice in the series, but some of them have had the "lemakness lacking. this doesn't. This has the extra layer of people putting in the time to blend difference variants of coconuts in order to achieve a lemak-fragrance balance that they like."
