Thanks to Indian armed forces huge contribution during our freedom struggle 1971. No we have not forgotten. Yes my beloved Dhaka, the city of my birth is named after the Temple of Maa Dhakeshwari (Durga). Coming from a Muslim family; I am proud of this history and the beautiful name of the temple and the city. There is no point of following any religion if it cannot teach you humanity, tolerance, peace and harmony. Apart from few incidents here and there; we the Bangalis from Bangladesh irrespective of our religious background love to live together in peace. I guess for us the Bangalis at times, we love our food and culture are more important than our religions. Amar shonar bangla ami tomai onek beshi valobashi. Joy Bangla Jai hind.

We Bangladeshies always have a very very soft corner not only because India was with us in independence but also because we share same culture and always will be. Books written before 1971 by the writers from Bangladesh always used to have characters from Tamil Nadu or Bihar or Delhi. Whereas Kolkata and Punjab was like we're one in a bunch of trees. Meghalaya and assams are still like our home. Politics differed us but we're and will always be united. Happy Victory day. ✌

It's a shame in Bangladesh we don't learn about these great Indian heroes of 1971. A recent effort was made by colonel Sajid Zahir of Bangladesh to award the families of the martyred Indian soldiers in Bangladesh. Although, recent attitude of some Indian politicians have sullied diplomatic ties I would like to thank all soldiers, volunteers who worked in the refugee camps in West Bengal and those who supported them financially. It was an act of kindness and chivalry that will never be forgotten. I hope the current hostile attitudes of people from both sides of the border ends soon.

@@RonnieBanerjee007 The proposition that Bengali culture should have priority over religion is something that is subjective. You are entitled to your opinion. My religion does not require me to choose one over the other. I can be a good Muslim and a Bengali at the same time. People who want to create division will always find something, religion or any - isms. Conversely speaking there are also extremist Hindutva groups and cow vigilantes in India that does threaten the sovereignity of Bangladesh. But that's not everyone. @@rahulr9799 Islamic fundamentalism is another populist propaganda term that means something completely different to different people. If by an Islamic fundamentalist you mean any person who goes about killing innocents in the name of religion, then you need to prove to me that is an Islamic fundamental which you can't unless you have spent years studying Shariah law, fiqh and jurisprudence . These terms radical Islam, jihadist are all propaganda tools to create division and invoke hatred by painting it as nationalism. It is something that I advise discretion upon. If you think Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a practicing Muslim and Pakistan was an Islamic nation then you are ill informed. Jinnah's favourite breakfast was that of an English breakfast with lots of pork sausages. All other dictators after weren't even close to practicing Muslims as there are numerous reports of them fornicating and drinking alcohol. There are also reported testimonies from Pakistani soldiers who witnessed their top brass drinking and celebrating the loss of Bangladesh as they were "bhukkhe nangey bangali" who were a burden to West Pakistan. If this is what you call Islamic fundamentalism then you are severaly ill-informed and mislead. Read up on Umar Ibn Khattab's rule and you will find that Muslims allowed Christians and Jews to have their own courts and were not subject to the Shariah. That is a what Islam supports. Not secularism, which means no one cannot have values but pluralism which means everyone is allowed to have their own morals and can live together as long as they abide by a contract to have peace. Nothing is more important to a Muslim to honour their word/promise. Especially if it is with another non Muslim. This is Islamic fundamentalism and not the new arbitrary proganda definition created by George Bush after 9/11.

@@makkialqaosain8872 let me tell you my friend, if religion had priority over bengali culture, Bangladesh would never be born. When Pakistani generals said "mai Banglio ki nasal badal dunga" he was talking about changing your culture and make it more Islamic. When they imposed urdu on your predecessors they were against your bengali language which they considered unislamic, you were always muslim, but your predecessors fought for your bangali identity and gave birth to your nation, that's why Bangladesh is probably the only Islamic nation that has a non religious national anthem written by a non Muslim. All those values are being forgotten sadly, Pakistan isi funded brainwashing groups have got a grip of your country, spreading deep fundamentalist ideals that goes against Bangladesh's whole foundation.
Edit: I think the uniqueness of Bangladesh is it's culture, don't lose it, some country wants you to lose your culture and join them voluntarily, don't let it happen. Consider me a well wisher from the other Bengal.

His anecdotes used to be a lot like this. A general had written a long time ago of the ethos of the Indian army, where in the absence of the regiment pandit, the regiment maulvi calmly took over and conducted the Krishna sermon. Also, another anecdote, Muslim NCO's from the Madras regiment who were held captive in Pakistan had a lot of trouble from the Pakistanis who never believed that a Muslim cannot speak Urdu/Arabic, and the Sikh officer would be the go-between and do Tamil/Punjabi translation.

Just to add to this, there is a moving story from Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw who led the Indian forces in the 1971 war - a man who was known for his treatment of prisoners of war. He was called to Lahore by the Governor after the end of the war and as he was shaking the hands of the staff, one of the men took his turban off and laid it at the Field Marshall's feet. He thanked him for his generosity towards his 4 sons who were POWs in an Indian camp. In their letters to their father back in Lahore, they wrote about all prisoners having received Qurans, prisoners sleeping in barracks while Indian troops slept outside and so on.

@@edokan the way you portray biharies as innocent, i really wonder do you know them well enough or not! When operation searchlight began in march 25th, many of the biharies took up arms along side Pak soldiers. First of the atrocities carried out at Dhaka University (Jagannath Hall), Rajarbagh Police lines. There's some colonies around the Rajarbagh Police lines where I've been living for 20 years. It's a well known history among us (mainly to those who are the residents here in the colony) that then biharies residing in these colonies took up arms & attacked Rajarbagh Police lines with weapons supplied by the Pak forces. Yes, I agree Biharies faced a serious retribution. But you have to know India took 90,000 PAK POWS. If India left them here, maybe the atrocities would've been commited towards 90,000 soldiers not to the so called innocent biharies. I must also add here that we even punished some of our own bengali people for supporting Pakistan back then. It's a shame for pakistanis that their Bihari brothers suffered for their atrocities yet in 50 years they never even tried to take them back. So much for supporting Pakistan i guess 😅
and you ask why would the Biharies support "a bunch of militias" who stood for Bengalee nationalism?
Firstly, we're the native people here with lineage going back thousands of years and a small group of people who came 20 years ago didn't matter much.
and lastly, "a bunch of militias" gave birth to an independent nation defeating a state's military. I hope Pak army never forget the monsoon in Bangladesh.

downing of Sabre jets by IAF pilots, listening to short wave radio BBC news and a camp outskirts of my city where Bangladeshi refugees lived in Tents (like Palestinians) and the 5 paisa Refugee Stamp we had to affix to each envelope. Amazing 70+ years later East Pakistan is now Shonar Bongla. Interestingly, Bangladesh allocates just 1.1% of its National GDP towards Defense Spending leaving enough budget for other human development. Thats a blessing in disguise for Bangladesh which is now ahead of Pakistan economically.
