    Wow they DEVOURED all that food from the last feeding! I adopted your idea of using a fabric pot when I was dealing with a bad gnat infestation and needed to air everything out. To keep the bin cool, I too add frozen food scraps and that seems to keep the worms comfortable.

      That was crazy how well they did with the food scraps, compost & bedding I put in there last time!! I really love the fabric pots as worm bins!! They drain well, breath well, and surprisingly keep pests out as well!! That is so great it has worked for you too!! Good to hear the frozen scraps works for temperature control!! I just put in my first set of frozen watermelon as it was slightly warm in there today! Thanks so much for watching and for letting me know about your fabric pot worm bin!!!🪱🪱🪱

Ice works so well especially if you have a bin that drains…I forgot to mention that the frozen bottles work well if you don’t want to add moisture but you can see I’m working with half a brain based on the number of times I mix up the oats and egg shells 😂🤣😂 Luckily I have Autumn their to keep me straight!! I was really happy with how well the compost worked out for them this week!! They really seem to break it down even further and go through the bedding and food faster!! Worms are so amazing!! Good morning, Patrick, from Windermere Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸
    I freeze rain water in shallow plastic bowl and I take the big cube and lay it on top and it takes about 8 hours to melt under the top lid. The worms can move away if it's too cold. And the water is just enough to keep them happy.
    Your results are great 👍

      You hit on my biggest fear & my biggest surprise!! This bin was started a little over 2 years ago, when I rescued 90 worms from a failed try at an indoor bin with too much matted paper & over feeding. I just chucked the worms in a bucket I had put some weeds in and to my surprise about 4 months later there were hundreds of worms...So I started this bin which now has at least 6000 worms!! I keep it in a mostly shaded area, fold down the top flaps of the grow bag and keep it directly on the ground. I think this combination keeps it stable in the mid to lower 80's during the day and high 70's at night during the summer...well within the red wigglers range of temperatures! I never thought an outdoor worm bin would work in Tampa, FL but I'm on my 3rd summer with them!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!! I really appreciate it!!🪱🪱🪱

    Good Evening from Brisbane, Australia, similar climate to Florida, just started my own 3 tier vertical worm bin, 900mm x 600mm (35 inches x 23 inches) a large one I know, have about 3000 worms, around a week in and all going well, so pleased I found your channel, so much info, almost overwhelming, however loving it, none the less, thank you so much for your video's. One question I have: when you do the time lapse video's, how do you supply the light and not have the worms try and burrow down? Thanks in advance, and take it easy from downunder!!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Před rokem +1

      Hello from Brisbane, Australia!! We definitely want to visit sometime soon!! I'm so glad you are enjoying out videos!! That 3 tier vertical worm bin sounds fantastic and huge!! So the time lapses I do in my VermiHut worm tower, we do by quickly lifting the lid and filming for 1 minute. We usually do this once a day or once every 12 hours depending on how fast the food is disappearing. I then string the series of videos together, speed them up and cut them down to about 2 seconds of fast footage from about the first 20 seconds of each days filming...so the worms don't burrow down too fast in 20 seconds but since it is sped up 10 times and put in series...7 days of footage gets compressed into about 14 seconds and the worms appear to not really burrow down as it goes from day to day. Hopefully that makes sense! When I do the time lapses at the end of my Outdoor Worm Bin videos, I let them burrow down for about 5 minutes and speed up the footage about 20 to 40 times! Thanks so much for all your support and thanks for letting us know about your big worm tower!!🪱🪱🪱

    So glad I came across this video! I literally just had an incident yesterday where my bin temp went up to 90 degrees, and posted that video just minutes before finding this gem. Thanks so much for sharing! 👏

      @Vermicompost  Před 2 lety

      I’ll check that video out! I look forward to seeing how the worms reacted and how you mitigated the heat!! I always run into issues in the summer but the worms figure out how to find the cool areas until I get my act together and cool things down for them😀 Thank so much for watching!! I’m really enjoying your channel!!🪱🪱🪱

  • @NanasWorms
    @NanasWorms Před 2 lety +2

    Patrick, I’ve taken food out of the freezer several times and neglected to feed it to my worms for a few days. It goes moldy in the summer temperatures right away. I noticed the food had heated up yesterday when I was feeding some mouldy food to my systems. Maybe if you take your food out of the freezer and let it go through a hot cycle before you feed it, your worms would not be subject to excess heating??
    BTW, I think it’s time we see the executive producer on camera!
    ~ Sandra

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Před 2 lety +2

      Letting it go through a thermophilic cycle would help to prevent future heat, almost like adding regular compost into the worm bin, but I think I would be afraid of the smells and critters that might be attracted to the food!! But you never know until you try it right?
      The executive producer has a few cameos...here she is with the whole family towards the end of this video: czcams.com/video/TWPsUyLtAzw/video.html she makes a quick one in the middle of this video: czcams.com/video/Mz207WzT5pA/video.html and she makes many (tiny) appearances on my watch face in many of my videos...she also helped me count for a few seconds in this one😀: czcams.com/video/lxFjjGWRn8M/video.html
      She's even more kind than she is beautiful so I really lucked out in life!! Thanks so much for watching and for the suggestion on preventing heat!!🪱🪱🪱

    How long have you been running the outdoor system? How long did it take you until you started harvesting the casting?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Před 2 lety

      Great questions!! This outdoor bin has been going for almost 2 years! I started my first partial harvest at about 4-5 months and then just kept harvesting every couple of weeks. I've never harvested it all at once, I keep it as a continuous flow bin where I keep feeding & adding bedding each week and pull about 3-5 pounds of castings out each 1-2 weeks. I hope that helps!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and ask some great questions!!🪱🪱🪱

I hope my bins can take it with some cooling since I life at the top floor. By the way, pulverized a load of egg shells today, is there anything more smelly than that? :D

      I didn’t realized how crazy Europes temperatures were getting this week until some of my UK commenters mentioned it getting up to 40C!!! It doesn’t even get that how down here in Florida!! The bottles trick works well because it doesn’t change the moisture level of the bin if you already have it perfect. I’m quick to put the pulverized egg shells in the jar so I don’t have to inhale too much🤣😂Not the best smell for sure!! Thanks so much for watching!! What is the best temperature range for the worms?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Před rokem +1

      The best range I've found for my red wigglers where they are most productive and consume the most is between the low 80's℉ to the low 70's℉. Parts of my bins have gotten into the 90's℉ and the worms just moved to the cooler outer edges like in this video: czcams.com/video/_fJNg0-1X6M/video.html I have also had my outdoor worm bin continue to thrive & consume food with temperatures down to the upper 30's & 40's℉. So anywhere from the high 30's to low 90's is livable for my red wigglers but the 70's to low 80's℉ is ideal!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching & for the great question!!🪱🪱🪱
