Mr Scotty. Diesel is $2.40 per liter ( $9.12 per gallon) in Canada. Gas is much much cheaper. Everyone here changed to gas trucks.

Is it best to buy a diesel locomotive
@@shperaxthat’s true not to mention the cost of repairs on the newer trucks, 6000 without labour for a fuel pump. Back in the old days around 30 years ago where the diesels didn’t break down all the time and fuel was cheap it was actually viable to go diesel but now not so much. Why do you think Cummins of all companies is making gasoline engines now well amongs other types including diesel.

I had two T444E 7.3 diesels in a row in big pickups. Great to tow with. Very expensive to fix when the injector cups corrode through.
You’re not wrong about it being expensive to fix for sure. Unfortunately the majority of failures of the cups are due to improper coolant maintenance.
@@bch5513 thats true. I was fastidious about the dip strips and additive for the coolant. I miss those trucks. Both had ZF 6 stick shifts.
The newer diesels are even more expensive when stuff goes wrong. And it goes wrong a lot more often.
@@bch5513, most of the trucks that had it were 98-03 the 94-97 trucks rarely had it happen cuz the internals were better, but it does happen.
I'VE got an automatic. I wish i had the manual. 03 7.3 never any serious problems.
When I sold cars and trucks my boss once loudly exclaimed, "A 150 is a light-duty pickup!" Light duty? They didn't look so light to me. But, as he often did, my boss proved right. What looked heavy to me, essentially a sports car guy, wasn't what a user of pickups thought of as heavy. When you look at capacities to tow and haul--things that men who use trucks in their jobs do every day--my boss's wisdom is evident. A 150 is for a homeowner who takes stuff to the dump, goes to Home Depot Saturday morning, or trailers a small fishing boat. Men who use a truck for work want real capacity on a daily basis. They want 250s, 350s, maybe larger, and often with a whompin' big diesel engine. And my boss also thundered, "Everybody wants to undertruck! Never let a customer undertruck! You'll just have someone mad at you four months later." He was right about that too.
So you’re saying that your profit margins were better selling bigger trucks
Under truck??
@@Jasiel.95 yeah what does that mean

Our company has a 3/4ton HD Chevy crew cab with a gas engine. When towing the company RV, 14k lbs, it averages 7 mpg in level terrain.
The government emissions regulations have killed all new diesel engines. Their cost to own and maintain has skyrocketed. If you can find on old Ford 7.3l, that's the best.

The only reason I have a 3/4 ton diesel is to pull our 25’ boat/trailer. Does it without issue. I’ve even pulled it over the Cascade Mountains in WA State to Idaho and back. But if we ever sell the boat, the truck goes too.
HERE is a wise truck owner/buyer!
@@pauljnolan1000 it fits the requirements, safely. If the boat goes I don’t need it anymore. I could get by with a Ford Ranger. The Superduty gets only about 14 mpg and drops to 11-12 mpg when towing. A Prius it’s not.🤣
I towed my 25ft boat with a f150. It does somewhat struggle, but it gets going fine.

I got a question for you, Scotty, what do you think of the 2008 6.4 diesel, is it any good? I’m hearing good and bad. Thank you for your time.
Any good you’re hearing is just rare cases where people got lucky, they were rushed through the engineering phase and they are horrible about blowing head gaskets and a lot of them will over fuel the back 2 cylinders and literally melt the pistons and wreck the entire motor. And they’re extremely expensive to fix when something does break. My advice is get a 7.3 powerstroke or a 6.7 if you can afford it
My dad had a ram 2010 2500 with the 5.7 hemi (And yes it was a 4th gen) and although that thing did anything we wanted it to, it would scream like mcdonalds was closing. Unfortunately, the engine blew up, so my dad just bought the same truck but with the Laramie package and the 6.7 L Cummins, and that doesn't even know anythings behind it when towing heavy loads with it 😂😂😂
$6.50 a gallon for diesel in NY state .
You mean "free when siphoned out of a municipal truck"
True with older diesels vs gassers. New diesels are not worth the cost with the def equipment
Proud new owner of an OBS 90 F350 turbo diesel CC longbed dually. Fn love this thing because I can actualy work on it myself. 14mpg unloaded. Haven't towed or hauled with it yet but looking for a cabover camper for it.
I have a gmt400 with the 6.5L, its a lead sled but its good on fuel and does what need it to do and its a simple truck and engine to work on, was lucky that its short comings were already fixed when i bought it🤙
My company I worked for did lease gas jobs rams. Pulled skid steers till the 6.4 blew and warranty replace them every time!
For pre emissions diesels I agree. If you’re buying new I disagree only unless you pull heavy on a very regular basis. The cost to maintain a new emissions controlled diesel is much higher.
I had a 7.3, great motor. But maintenance cost and if you are in the middle of no where can be hard to find parts. I could not find a air filter in kansas after going thru a bug storm. I had to drive all over colorado springs for a oil stick. I loved it though and it made me a better mechanic.
You forget about government fluid, that make those truck only last 600k miles reliably and that is for semi truck
You're totally right Scotty. Love my 6.0 Powerstroke!
Diesel for work little pick up for daily driving
_Diesel for work diesel for daily driving._
Yup. My little pickup daily driver is a diesel chevy luv 1981 5 speed long bed
Pulling the same trailer there was less than 1 mpg difference between my power wagon and a 3500 duramax. Not worth the added cost anymore unless you pull that kind of weight very often.
how heavy was the trailer though if it weighs 3k then sure you don't need a diesel but if you got a 15k+ load you better get a diesel
I got 18mpg average towing my car and hauling all my stuff from New York To Kansas last year on my 2002 Ram 2500. I usually gets around 22 when unloaded.
I know a guy that has a Chevy 1500 with a gasoline engine, he said his truck alone we'll make a round 16 or 17 miles per gal. But when he pulls something it only makes around 9 miles per gallon
What if you don't haul things that often....is it still a better option?
Still driving my 88 F250 Supercab 7.3idi Automatic 4x4. 15 mpg all day everyday no matter empty or loaded. Thats with mud tires and a bad alignment. D60 swapping it soon, will fix alignment, and put street tires on it. I imagine 16+ after that.
I got a 2016 Chevy Colorado 2.8 diesel. Tows 7,500 lbs and gets 30+ mpgs on the highway. I call it a mini beast. I've hauled and towed with it
My parents in their retirement sold their house and bought a truck and camper. My dad is a Ford guy so he was choosing between the diesel and Triton V10. He chose the V10 and regretted the first time he pulled his brand new camper. That V10 got 7 miles to the gallon when it was towing
I just got my 1st Diesel 4x4 and I LOVE it!
The fuel cost 2$ a gallon more and the cost of maintenance and repair is like 4 times as much. So you still save with the gas motor, and it starts when it’s cold
Repair costs maya cost more but they rarely require repairs. And they will last 3 times as many miles.
How do diesel engines get gas mileage?
Technically diesel is 'gas oil' so the term was correct.
@@OM617a That's not what gas mileage means. When the term gas mileage is used it is referring to gasoline. When speaking of diesel it is more appropriate to say fuel milage or fuel economy.
@@franksmythe6969 Any of these phrases can be used to describe either gasoline or diesel consumption, as they are the same thing, just in different states of refinement.

As an european, I've never understood why americans buy V6/V8 pickups for daily city-driving.
They make a nice sound when you step on the pedal. It's an expensive sound, there's no way to argue against that, but it's a nice sound.
@It'sYaBoiMirage - Because many Americans are insecure and try to compensate for their "small" or "low self esteem". Or it's just that some Americans who don't live or work in farms still love the feel of big trucks. I for instance love the feel of a race bike and why I own an R1 & S1000-RR for daily riding in the city even though I'm not a professional racer. It's not the same thing as trucks but you can get an idea of what I'm trying to say.
I drive a truck cause people drive stupid.
If they see a bigger car they’re gonna hesitate cutting you off.
I have a daily Toyota Camry and pricks always cut me off lol.
Versus when I’m driving my V8 truck it’s a smooth ride I’m chilling.
If you lived here you might understand. People use trucks here often and still there’s far less in the cities. The US has a lot more rural areas and is a lot bigger than your average European countries. I’ve met two different couple from Europe that actually thought they could drive from NY to California in a day. I’m not sure Europeans that have never been here know how big the US really is.
American like to waste resources. I mean they send money for wars. The society is careless.
I drove a 2022 blue bird school bus with the Godzilla 7.3, its average was 1.5-2mpg. I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for fuel on my 40 mile round trip daily route
I 100% agree with you, but, if your not planning to haul a lot of weight,it will cost you alot more on diesel fuel
I would agree with you completely but we use a gas burner dually that gets 14mpg for $10,000 less. It has 254k miles on it with the factory drivetrain and usually pulls 15-20k lbs. It's also 10 years old. It just depends on how you treat your vehicle
never knew he was chill like that
The $10,000 extra for diesel will but a lot of gas for the gasoline engine. Not to mention the maintenance costs.
You will get some of that back in resale
@@petermandel2552 yeah but inflation. Money now is better than money later. Diesel if you're towing heavy daily I guess.

I got a 2500hd 6.0 and its not great but not too bad for a heavy gas truck. I get 8-9 towing.
I sold Fords forever. A guy comes in, a referral - which is nice. Long/short he orders an F-250, SuperCab (which is unusual, but whatever) with a 5.4 Triton! I tried to talk him out of it, to get the 7.3 (early 2000's) but no go. Truck comes in, it's nice. About a month later the guy comes in complaining about mileage and lack of power. Omgawd.
What a goofball 😂
We had a ford F-150 sport that started acting up, overheated, started having shifting issues and because I was battling cancer around that time we couldn’t afford to have an unreliable vehicle so we traded it in for a 22 ram 1500 bighorn 4x4 with a 5.7L Hemi Equipped With The Etorque system and the Gas Mileage is amazing around town or even driving for 8 hours with the occasional fuel up which is around 5 hours in but that’s definitely dependent on how much we stop, regardless the etorque has been a god send.

I beg to differ. I have a 1969 Chevy 3/4 4x4. I put a 454 in it that was professionally rebuilt basically stock. It may only get about 10 mpg empty but the mileage is the same pulling our 18' gooseneck stock trailer loaded with livestock. And it pulls just as well as our 2004 GMC Sierra 2500hd 4x4 with a duramax. The diesel gets better mileage both loaded and unloaded but not that much. And until recently it was cheaper to pay for the gas than the diesel. Also, I'm from the central valley of California. We had to take the 69 on vacation to Nevada one year. Once we fueled up with Nevada gas the fuel mileage jumped up unbelievably. Our 1991 S10 did the same thing on vacation in Nevada.

What if I get a dually but use it as a regular truck. I wanted to get a dually cause I might occasionally haul something, but I want it as a daily driver too. Some people will find that weird, but I just wanna know what kinda engine would be best.

I love my second gen. Don’t care what people think about it. I’ve had great mileage when I went across two states and back in full tank round trip and with a loaded trailer with a car on it.
My 454/nv4500 would pull a house if I told it to. But my 24v/47re will get twice if not three times the mileage! And unloaded it still gets 5-10mpg better economy
Very true, I flip cars and when I'm hauling my cars my mpgs averages the same as if I wasn't pulling anything lol

Mu ford f350 7.3 is goving me codes on all injectors ( high to low side open) the truck will start right up, lot of white smoke with a few backfires when up to temp and it won't go above 2500 rpms
With all of the bogus emissions that diesel’s have now my gas truck gets the same mileage as a diesel. I have both. I love the extra torque and power of a diesel but the added cost and maintenance costs just isn’t worth it anymore. Thank you Uncle Sam.
Only reason I bought a diesel 6.7 was because I’m disabled and wheelchair bound and I tow a travel trailer annnndddd live in the mountains with like no real neighbors so if we got stuck it’s really on us to get out of whatever situation we are in.
Reliability and power was the reason for me. Gas engines up here can’t rough it I guess cause no one I know who lives here uses anything but diesel vehicles.
Only reason to buy a diesel is if you actually need the power now. With all the emissions killing the reliability and running costs it's pointless otherwise...
GM 6.6 gas with the 10 speed Allison behind it does pretty good, and you can use it as a daily driver and not worry about clogging up the emission system.
