- Arthur Conan Doyle's 'That Little Square Box' was first published in London Society magazine in December 1881.
It takes place on a British steam ship, not that illustrated (!), and concerns a couple of Englishmen, an Irishman and a German. Why did the Finnegan and Muller nearly miss the boat, what are they concealing and why are they so nervous?
It's a curious early Doyle, and he signed it A.C.D.
It is read by Greg Wagland.

This story is GREAT....you had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Totally enjoyable....fantastic ending! I tried to guess several endings during the reading....NOT....EVEN....CLOSE!!
Haha, I diddnt see that coming! Brilliant plot twist and great suspense ! Classic!
Yet another Conan Doyle story I hadn't heard of.
Beautifully read, as always.
Many thanks.
Brilliant narration!
Thanks again, when I see a new story in my feed from Magpie, it is like a good friend has come to visit me.
I am so happy you are recording these unknown Conan Doyle stories. IMO they are just as entertaining as any of the Sherlock Holmes stories. I hope you do more of them!
I think Sherlock stories are better.
How did you know I'm sitting here wishing for a new story?? :) Cheers, Mr. Wagland!
I love these short stories...always a little twist in the tale.
Didn't expect the twist to be so great. Throughout the entire story I kept thinking he should have gone to the captain straight a way. I can sense the foolishness of the main character.
Enjoying this with my morning coffee ☕ Thanks
A new level of excellent accents. Your Irish accent was beautiful. You transitioned so well from English to German to American and to a fine Irish.
It’s exciting to hear these relatively unknown stories. Thanks Greg. It’s always a pleasure to hear your voice.
I actually only speak English the rest is all them and their tactics I'm from the US never been outside the country
Xmas has come early!!thankyou Greg, Wonderful ! 🥰
Even with hundreds of imitations, there's still no substitutions for the good Sir himself.
Thank you for these!!
Lovely stuff. Thank you Mr Wagland for creating such pictures in the mind, and travels back in time and...wow, so many excellent accents!
finally , a new ONE..
thank you sir
Awww yiss! Now I can stop listening to The valley of fear for the 1340th time!
I'm glad I'm not the only one!!! I listened to A Study in Scarlet every night to fall asleep, for months now. I love the first part only. Hey, cheers from across the Atlantic. 😊😊
Excellent work squire
Thank you! Very well read. For the astute reader this story contains volumes encapsulated in the fewest words; a parable. I'm becoming convinced Doyle was one of the greatest writers who ever lived.
Loved it! As always with your readings, I get totally immersed. This time so much so that I burst out laughing at the end and felt embarrassed for the main character😍thank you!
Please don’t be offended that I love your voice and I use this channel to fall asleep. Much love❤️
I must admit Mr Wagland, i love your Sherlock Holmes stories too much than is healthy😂😂your reading is excellent!!
Excellent narration as always! Thanks for posting

WoW, I just finished the Sharlok holmes series, feeling sad that it ended, how did you know I was wishing a new story,😆cool, Cheers 👍
Thank you
This one really had me fooled. I thought the timid man would be the hero in the end. Very riveting story. I was completly drawn into it.
Brilliantly read. Great characters clearly identified. An exciting story. Thanks Greg. 👏🏻👏🏻💐💐🌟🌟aunty
Glad you enjoyed it, aunty!
I love the sound of Greg’s voice. !!Well done :)
Haha! Great story with a bang of an ending!
Love... Thank you!
Now your just spoiling us Greg, and we love it, thank you! 😉
I never knew making fun of Americans for saying "Yurrup" was a tradition that dated back to 1890
I know. I found that fascinating.
Most excellent! Thank you!
Ha ha ha! That was unexpected! I won't give the ending away but I will say:
"I really flocking enjoyed it!"
Ohh my goodness so unexpected, what a twist. Seems slightly uncharacteristic of some of his other short stories
What a comic twist! Never knew Sir ACD had that much of a funny bone in him.
Mr Wagland always a pleasure
Thank you so much for your talent and your time it is very much appreciated
Thank you!💖
Simply brilliant! Thank you.
Love it! Thank you !
Great voice actor,
Thank you so much for this.
That was amusing. I had thought the whole time it would have been some extraordinary firework or something of that nature. But the ending was truly a very good twist. Thank you for sharing this.
Consistently brilliant.
An excellent yarn!
Thanks Greg!
Thank you, Greg Wagland, for another new title (enjoyed the ‘Silver Hatchet’, by the way) and for providing an escape from the rampant “flue” porn- ... best regards!
Bravo!

Wow it is Amazing story
It a fun tale, Md Afeef Reyez 8a!
Doyle !
What a cracker Superb narration 10/10
Help. LOST STORY TITLE. Not The Lost World I believe. In brief: maybe a Conan Doyle story or parody, man convinced to accompany team up S. American river to a land of dinosaurs, a ravine is traversed by felling a tall tree, tree removed and explorers exposed to monkey men. In the end some explorers return and at a lecture a baby pterodactyl suprises all.
The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle. Available on Spotify called Classic Breakdown.
Thank you. I found what I was looking for. The reason I thought it was a parody must be because it is actually a BBC drama... btw really enjoy your digressions.
Listen to this one, you won't regret it.
No pictures of rocks?!! What’s goin on around here?! It’s a free for all! Geezz Lauise Calamine Lotion!!!!
Hi Greg! Anything in the works to share with your adoring fans? ☺️Hope all is well with you in 2022.
Lmao 😂😂🤣🤣😂
Guessed the ending!
Yes. I think I did when I first read it.
I would have thrown myself off the ship
Brilliant story brilliant read and misperception continues into the 21st century 🤯
Doyle wrote this? "I tried not to shake it." But they were RUNNING to the ship. Other blaring errors too. Blah. Not narrators' problem. Well done narrator.
Cheers Tracy. It's a bit like running with scissors. Only a question of time...
It’s a little hard to believe anyone could be as spineless as the main character. 🙄
There's a lot of spinelessness about. Then and now!
