Yes! Yes! Yes! Dang it Mike. I'm getting tired of calling you a genius. :) :) :)
Lol, thanks Troy! I'm just a dude.
Hi Mike..I can’t tell you how much you’ve helped me with hydroponic growing. After watching your mason jar self watering system I started roaming our garage and found some unused bottle caps.I hot glúed them to my wide mouth mason and it works!!
Thanks again for all your help.
That's awesome! You rock, love the ingenuity.
What you're doing is awesome Mike! All this biodegradable 3D printed stuff is great!!! 👍 Those classes sound like a good time too. 🤔
Looks great Mike! Thanks for a demo on cleaning the clay pebbles. Way easier than i expected. I will have to do a little experiment with those.
Maybe I’m a home canning nerd, but wow that is a pretty mason jar at about the 740 mark! I really love this all glass approach that you’re taking toward growing. My arthritis can’t take this plastic approach.
Great work Mike😊
Self watering is the way to go. It was a chore for me to babysit some broccoli sprouts day and night for 10 days.
Same here, I lost a bunch in the past too.
I am amazed at his knowledge. Thank you!
I live in MN and we are having fake spring and it’s killing me cause late April frost is a real thing. This may help me save my newbie gardening sanity!
Update: just ordered 3 Mason Jar adapters! My kids are so excited to do this on our bay window! ❤ your channel!
I agree with @TroyTime02 because I was thinking the same thing as I was watching this video. You are a genius! I clicked on the link below the video to your Etsy store, but all I see are the soda pop bottle adapters. I never drink pop and don't know anybody who does. HOW DO I BUY THE MASON JAR ADAPTORS? I've tried gardening over the years and have failed. But your channel has given me tremendous hope and am very excited to get started with microgreens and growing a garden. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your very clever inventions. BRILLIANT!
Thanks, just trying to help people out. The mason jar lids sold out quick. As soon as I get the orders processed, I will restock my store. Probably in a few days, check back or watch for another video announcing it. Thanks again, I am glad it helps.
@KeepOnGrowin did you get your store restocked?? (Are they plastic-free adapters??)
@@cookiegriffith7556 Some are in there. They are PLA, bioplastic.
Thank you so much @@KeepOnGrowin
Woohoo can't wait to try this. I have sprouted in a mason jar but love this! Thanks Mike! Love your channel!
Awesome! Thank you!
This is awesome!! Can’t wait to try!
Hey Mike, thanks.
Amazing
Genius!! Thank you!
I love you & your videos!
Amazing!!! I love your channel!
My Hero, I was literally staying in front of all my greens this weekend and wondering, how can I automated this watering. Cause now its getting warmer here in MN and I'm getting hang up with my chickens as well, sometimes I forget to check on the greens, well, I wonder and you delivered, again 🥰💜
Thank you, glad I could help. Working on even more.
My chickens love the roots.
Thank you so much. You are an inspiration 😊
Hey Mike. Just a thought. A very small top layer of bb sized clay pebbles as a top layer might help prevent losing seeds and even out the starting height of the rmicrogreens. I'm not sure. it might make clean up harder IDK. Maybe something worth a try???
Yep, very good. One guy I talked to is using perlite. As you said, a little more involved with the cleaning. I was about to try it with amaranth, that grew a whole lot better on the perlite. Might check out the smaller hydroton too. Let me know if you try.
@@KeepOnGrowin I've just added seeds to perlite and hoping for promising results.
Mike, i love this idea perfectly, done at solving a problem! I would really like to see an extension put onto this project!! So you can grow lettuce in some clay pebbles or other veggies a little longer… I’m terrible at remembering to water, this would help so much!!! Hope to see this extension idea next! 🙂
That's the next step we are working on through the Spring. It's really exciting.
@@KeepOnGrowin wahoo!!!!
Thank you For this!!❤
Genius!!
Love what you do. Have been meaning to do this and you just gave me the motivation to start thankyou. Try Shiso otherwise called Japanese Basil. very nutritious and tons of flavor. Might take some getting use to :) If you grow the plant dry the leaves and collect the seeds which are very nutritious.
I got some more buckets and bucket lids with four 4 inch net cups built in. Mine are under the edge of my camper roof out of the rain but get plenty of sun. I`m gonna try some cabbage, celebrity tomatoes and beit alpha self pollinating cucumbers and root cuttings of the cucumber plants to conserve seeds this year and transplant them in my soil garden. I also want to try yellow cape gooseberries in the buckets if I can get seeds to germinate.
Nice! Let me know how the gooseberries go!
Another great and informative video! Thanks Mike! You brought my husband excited to start growing microgreens! I’ve been hoping he’s want to get involved.
Awesome!!
That's really easy 🌱🌱🌱👍🏼
So, this is a fantastic idea and I plan to print up a few of the stands. Just somethings to keep in mind for anyone who wants to 3d print these though.
The 3d printed PLA is technically biodegradable but only at special facilities. So don't just throw it out or put it in your compost. A google search should help you find out where it can go if you break it or something. It is still a great idea on how to reduce plastic waste though, since these will be reusable and this set up uses a lot less plastic than the standard methods with trays. PLUS you are recycling glass containers.
Also, 3d printed objects are printed in hundreds or thousands of thin layers that get melted together during the print. This means that there are tiny spaces, air bubbles, and gaps where bacteria can grow when using them in conjunction with plants, water, etc. Its a good idea to give them a good clean and scrub with soap and then bleach to keep everything safe between growing. This shouldn't add any significant time to the process.
Mike, I wonder if there is anyway these could be made from metal eventually. You have a fantastic idea for an invention here! I work with a non-profit that has a greenhouse and cafe; and we even have a 3d printer in one of our after school programs. I can't wait to try these out to grow some micro greens for the cafe.
I wonder if you could take a mason jar lid, punch a few small holes, and achieve a similar effect?
Thanks. If you punch holes in mason jar lids prop it up from the bottom a little and it should work.
@@KeepOnGrowinMy thoughts exactly. Maybe glue two lids together with a non toxic glue and drill holes in the sides of the bottom ring to mimic what you have there.
The metal lids will rust (not sure how quickly). How about using the plastic replacement lids for the jars? They would have to be raised (or something) to let the water out…
Oh, maybe attached 2 lids together (1 upside down) using stainless bolts?
@@yourekittenme. I was thinking about those plastic lids as well. Honestly I don't mind using plastic to plant. But I DO love the idea of minimizing the amount of plastic and not using things that are single use or easy to break.
I think the metal rings would last quite a while. I was thinking of sealing two together with aquarium sealant.
With the right tools, you could drill holes right into the glass. Then just seal the top with a mason jar lid.
Thank you very much~😂
Spray paint the bottle black so uv light can't get in
You can, I am not worried about it. Oooo, I can have my wife paint some art!
@@KeepOnGrowinYou could probably sell those art pieces.
Great new concept- made me wonder if the same concept (coke bottle size) could be used with those plastic mesh microgreen trays instead of clay marbles, with a hole drilled through the mesh for the holder? Looking forward to try the Thingiverse print file.
Here is another idea that works great; cut a cotton ball into ~3 flat sections, flatten each out to fit nicely into the bottom of a 2" netcup as a seed holder/starter- can even pull a small protrusion to reach though the net cup to wick water. Cheaper than rockwool for a hydroponic rain gutter system.
Awesome! Thanks for the tip! I love cheap and easy solutions!
Could not find quart jar adapter in your etsy shop.
I'm sorry, they sold out quick. I will make some more after I get the first batch shipped out. Check back in a few days.
Yes 👍
I wonder if you could put a snail in the mason jar, to eat algae and provide nutrients?
Great! I plan to do some sprouts this way. Got clay pebbles. Love the self-watering idea from hummingbird feeders etc. What is best source of seed? I have sources for veggies, fruit and flowers seeds but not bulk for sprouting.
I use True Leaf Market, some I just get on Amazon
Buttercrunch lettuce and arugula are my favorites right now. Growing on the clay pebbles in glass containers from the 2nd hand store.
Awesome!!
Mike, you've been showing us all how you grow all of this....do you havr a few recipes you use with all these microgreens and vegetables you eat?
As it warms up we will start some, already planning some! Thank you!
He made a video using them for spring rolls a while back. I just made pasta carbonara with pea shoots instead of peas. I also make “ wasabi pea “ salad with radish and pea shoots. I’m having a broccoli micro greens and cheese omelette for breakfast today and blt pasta using amaranth and kohlrabi as the “t” , for dinner. They really are beautiful in a spring roll or a spring roll “ bowl “ if you don’t have rice wraps 😀
Looking forward to you Thingiverse file!!
Hey Mike! Thanks for a awesome and profecional channel. I will have to do a little experiment with those Microgeens system too. My son have a 3d printer and I would like if you can send me sone plans for fabrication of the cola bottles supports. I am living in the north of Denmark and looking forward to follow your channel.
Here you go, files will be here. www.thingiverse.com/keep_on_growin/designs
Love this! Now I can say the old used 3D printer my son got was worth it 😂 Hey have you tried making monofilament from recycled bottles? How did it work? Any tips?
Thanks man you’re the bomb!!!
Cool! Have fun!. No, it would not be worth my time. Also I believe it in PETG and I am working with PLA, plant based.
Could you use the biodegradable bag to cover the seeds until they sprout?
I wonder how many times you can get out of it.
I love the kit idea.
Also, I've found two microgreen mixes at Dollar Tree. It may be a good way to try several different types of new greens.
That's a great idea. I used the foil because it was easy to hold in place. Maybe use some clips or a rubber band. I will play with it.
This is wonderful!! Can you micro-green rosemary?
Thank you. I don't believe so, it is more like a shrub. I have never tried though.
Is there a place where we can purchase the print file for these? Thanks for all you do Mike!
No problem. Here you go: www.thingiverse.com/keep_on_growin/designs
I will be uploading the mason jar lid this weekend.
Just wondering could you grow a blueberry bush? In a bin what about northern winters
Not really suited for bushes.
Question
I have some small pebbles like your using here. Do you think it would work with them, or do they need the larger one's for stability?
This is great. I am interested so I can print with my 3D printer. Where do I sign up?
I will post to Thingiverse in a few days. It will be here: www.thingiverse.com/keep_on_growin/designs
@@KeepOnGrowin Hey Mike. I don't see the 3D print files on your page. have you uploaded yet? I'd like to print off some of these to grow some veggies!
@@sebtomacproductions1215 Not yet, trying to catch up on my orders first. I will post when I do.
Hi Mike, I have been following you for quite a while now. I don't drink soda but I like the profile of the tall slim water container and was wondering if you would consider making an adapter to fit glass kombucha bottles. Costco sells a 12 pack of Kirkland Organic Kombucha and I hate putting all those bottles in the recycle bin. Synergy uses the same size bottle (and cap) as well as numerous other Kombucha makers. Also I have bought those lids on Amazon _ i got the 38mm f217 - to make my own Kombucha. I have Mason jars but that just looks too big and clunky for my taste.
When I get caught up, I will give it a try. I have some Synergy but I think it's the big bottle, I will check or go drink more kombucha, lol.
It looks like the lid fits both bottles, I will give it a try.
@@KeepOnGrowin Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Can't wait till the kombucha pattern download is ready. Gotta go to the library to see if they have a 3d printer.
Can you use the mason jar adapter like ollas to water plants (cherry tomatoes)?
Hello~every time watched new video very interesting..where i can get the adapter??bcz i have jars ...please..
mikevanduzee.etsy.com
Is this same as hydroponics
Thanks for the great videos! What's your thingiverse page name?
keep_on_growin, michael vanduzee
Fantastic! Do we have to run it through a slicer program to print it, or is that already in the file? Still learning. Thanks!
It's the stl, already sliced. I can give out the gcode if anyone needs to modify it.
@@KeepOnGrowin great! That makes things easy. Thank you!
Do I set them outside or do they grow in the dark?
How to store microgreens after harvest?? I am new to this :-)
Are micro greens just miniature crops, like bonsai veggies? Or are they herbs and just naturally minimal space needed items?
Right, just tiny plants. I grow them out bigger to get more for my money
Is there a link to download a file to print the mason jar
and bottle caps?
Mason jar lid not on there yet but will be soon. www.thingiverse.com/keep_on_growin/designs
What are the self watering adapters made of?

I'm wondering if it makes a difference between plastic and glass and the rate of algae growth?
Could be. I am growing a lot more now, we will watch.
are your self watering adapters patterns available on thingiverse? I want the pattern to print my own if possible. thank you

There is a link in the description. I am sold out of the mason jar adapters. I will make more by the end of the week.
????? help please, i can’t find the beginner kit link in the description. please help me get to it. thanks
I am no longer offering that. Just the adapter. The clay pebbles are readily available on Amazon.
Are microgreens the same thing we used to call sprouts?
yes with the exception that sprouts are in jars. If you sell them here, they are more regulated because of the higher possibility of bacteria.
If there is any bacteria, when you wash sprouts, it goes all over the plants. Microgreens grow above and you just harvest the top.
@@KeepOnGrowinWe never grew sprouts in jars, we grew them on a mat and we harvested the tops. Seems like a marketing term made up to catch more people.
