The album that this song came from, Some Girls, is so diverse. It gave me a much greater appreciation of their group. This is where people really miss out by not playing an album front to back. It’s really a shame. But I’ll run twenty red lights in Mick’s honor! Joking…😂😂😂

From the 1978 album, " Some Girls", it is a true story of a trip to Bakersfield by Mick, on a Sunday morning, heavily influenced by the country and western scene, and the availability of gospel music on the stations on the radio.
This was the B side to " Miss You", with cosmic reflections that high light how the band had the ability to dig deep and create music that was thought provoking and enjoyable.
The harmonies so pretty, the piano and instruments, including Ronnie Wood's use of the pedal steel guitar for the solo and highlights, bringing country to life for The Stones. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Lance. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

They recorded an entire album that was country/western themed. "Dead Flowers," Far away eyes," and more. It was a really good album, with many good songs. It was called "Country Honk." "Dead Flowers": is another really good song both lyrically, and music wise.

The reference to Bakersfield is about "The Bakersfield Sound" which influenced Country Rock starting in the mid 60s. It influenced The Byrds, Beatles, Dylan, Gram Parsons, Neil Young, The Stones, Allman Brothers and Southern Rock in general, and countless other Rock acts since the mid 60s. Buck Owens and Merle Haggard brought the Bakersfield Sound to the masses in the early 60s and Rock stars took notice as the Bakersfield Sound began to sweep the U.S. Country became a part of many Stones songs starting with Sticky Fingers in 1971.

There is a very country version of Honky Tonk Woman actually called Country Honk. You should hear that too.

Thanks Harrison for your expressive reaction to one of my favorite Stones tune. The slide instrument played by Ronnie Wood is a Pedal Steel Guitar, a staple in country rock w Sneaky Pete, Rusty Young and Jerry Garcia being 3 prominent players. Also you hear the influence Gram Parsons had on Keith Richards + the whole band. Another Stones song w same Country vibe is Sweet Virginia, check out the Live version.

They spent time back around 1970 with a guy named Gram Parsons, he first came to attention when he joined the Byrds when they 'went country' (album "Sweetheart of the Rodeo", he then Moved on with another member of the Byrds Chris Hillman to found the 'Flying Burrito Brother's' Emmy Lou Harris was dating Gram at the time. They with Poco and Commander Cody were founders of Country Rock.

Honky Tonk Women ,Dead Flowers , Wild Horses, much of the Exile on Main Street Album is country. The Stones were definitely into country. Many British groups were heavily influenced by American country. From the British invasion The Beatles to some extent were influenced by country and like the Stones the Kinks did a lot of country type songs and even put out a country style album Muswell Hillbillies.

I've never seen this video. I was prepared mentally for it to be mimed, but no! No doubt the sound was well produced to get this final outcome, but the band really delivers in this one. It looked effortless. I also had no idea that Mick was comfortable enough at a piano to accompany the band while he also sang, and I've been a fan for decades. Thanks for your great take on this! Does anyone know if this was from their album Stripped, or at least from that era?

This was actually recorded during the Mick Taylor days. The stones were hanging out with Gram Parsons then . and his country influence could be heard on songs like Dead Flowers and Sweet Virginia. Also songs like Factory Girl and Prodigal Son on the Beggars Banquet album had a country blue grass sound to them.

Indeed, Beggars is really the period where they started exploring country blues, as evident in “Dear Doctor, “No Expectations,” and even parts of the album’s Gospel-tinged coda, “Salt of the Earth.” “Factory Girl” probably has more folk elements, but it's such a unique amalgamation of Appalachian folk and world music with its conga drums and Hindustani tabla. (I love this album.)
