I've been growing Cosmos for over 30 yrs in USA zone 4 - upper midwest. As I have a cottage garden, I let the Cosmos reseed itself and it is so prolific that it comes up like weeds! In the thinning process, I found that planting a handful of small Cosmos plants together in a bunch acts like a natural stake as the plants support each other. I plant each bunch about 12-18" apart. With this method, you can create a sturdy Cosmos hedge that is absolutely stunning in July & August. Thanks for the pruning tips, Sarah. I will try them this summer.

Christine Nichols yes you are so right! Worked for me as well. I planted them way to close and the result is that they are very straight without staking.

My mom planted cosmos for years across the front of the house (east exposure) in zone 4. She harvested seeds all summer and reseeded in the spring from the seeds she harvested, never thinning and never staking the plants and they were beautiful all summer every summer.

🌸🌸🌸I once grew cosmos from seed and planted them in an 8ft by 2ft bed in which my Dad used to put the ashes from our coal fire and the cosmos grew to 6ft high! Amazing! I’ve never managed to grow them as tall since then as I don’t have a coal fire now.❤️

Interestingly, I planted one cosmos plantlet in a tub that was on a windy corner (I didn't know any wiser) and it grew so sturdy, it was huge, like a small tree! I put it down to the possibility that it strengthened its stem to deal with the wind. I was amazed at this particular plant, it was a beauty, so healthy and full of flowers, just from one little seed.

    • @snu3877

I had one plant that did something similar. The stem was as thick as my thumb, and it was over 6 feet tall! I have no idea how it grew so tall and sturdy. I was hoping it would seed itself, but alas, no 'babies' the next spring.

Great Video, You can also leave a small patch uncut to go to seed and the birds love the seeds and while they are eating them some drop to the ground and will stay dormant until the wether gets warm the following year. I do not know why but the ones that self seed seem to be stronger plants then the ones I start in Poly Tunnel. The bees go barmy for Cosmos. Great for wildlife gardens.

I just planted 100 seeds indoors in individual seedling pots and 95% have germinated. After one week though, (they are 5 cm tall) I have noticed that they are very straight and spindly and am worried that due to their slender nature they might break under their own weight. Even with a gentle water sprayer, I managed to break one of them.
My question is, are they supposed to be like that at this stage?
Should I re-pot them, deeper perhaps to give them more of a longitudinal support?
    Your thoughts are appreciated.
