Eurorack granular synthesis module comparison

  • I've had Beads for a long time but have never really gelled with it. More recently I've acquired Brinta and Mojave, so it seemed like time to come to grips with granular in general, and these modules in particular.
This is a very basic comparison based on me reading through the manuals and spending time wiggling knobs. Each module gets a first pass using a simple Pianophonic sequence, then some time with a more complex audio source using some acoustic material from my last CD, "The Willow Ladder."
(Available on Bandcamp at schusslermusic.com, I will note. Nudge nudge.)
I'm really just interested in seeing which one gives me more interesting results with less RTFM'ing. I'm not sufficiently impressed by granular synthesis in general to really grind through any opaque interface designs.

i often feel like error instruments modules are so close to getting to something truly wonderful, but then there is always one or two aspects that feel like huge dealbreakers.

I was so close of getting my hands on the BRINTA. Very glad I watch your demo. Those bugs are deep deal breaker for me. Thanx for the great VIDs.

Bugs indeed ..the save delays and transition glitches were really annoying.
I'm sure you can preconfigure some cool settings for use but not being able to change in real time would be very frustrating.

Got myself the MOJAVE instead and really really enjoying it. Even if it's not quite the same path. @@xpump876

Beads is great for percussion. Freeze the buffer with something noisy, set grain size to short and shape to "expodec", then sequence grain position to get a percussion loop.

I never got anything useful out of clouds but love Beads, still hope for a clone so that i can buy a second one. Really a shame that they let one of the best Eurorack modules just disappear after a small initial production run. Btw. i have never done anything "clouds like" with it. I love the "grain size" up to 4 seconds and the 32 seconds buffer.

For me Brinta sounds really good, (also in the video on this module in Cinematic Laboratory's series on granular modules here on YT) and at that price it's very tempting, but that load gap thing or whatever you want to call it, that's a bummer I think. I had Clouds as my first module, never understood it at the time but today I got Beads and find it very useful : )

What Beads clone is this im looking for one?

It's not a clone, just an alternate black panel: reverb.com/brand/dusty-clouds?product_type=keyboards-and-synths&category=synths

morhagene and arbahr are still THE MODULES for doing granular stuff. the new Tempera which isn't eurorack is a granular monster.

The Brinta glitches are a disappointment. It’s such a fun, playable module otherwise. Save and load operations should be smooth so they don’t take you out of the performance flow
Some really interesting sounds with Mojave’s arpeggiator and envelope settings. I think I prefer Brinta for something more immediate though

    • @JohnSchussler
      @JohnSchussler  Před 9 měsíci +1

Brinta's the most immediate, mostly because it has the fewest controls. Although I appreciate flexibility, Beads and Mojave suffer by offering so many controls with multiple states per control. And in the case of Mojave, from using non-standard terminology....

@@JohnSchussler "non--standard terminology" -- exactly, thank you for saying this. Qu-bit does this silly thing time and again, like with Nautilus and the business of "sonar" -- metaphors should explain, not induce an additional layer of opacity ...
