  • Today we are going to get started with looping and granular synthesis, using the ADDAC system 112 VC looper and granular processor. An extensive module with lots of hands on and CV control over it’s looper and granular section. The possibility to record and store loops, and using those to build granular textures make it a bit of a workstation for granular processing, with an interesting approach.
    In this video I quickly explain the concept of recording loops and using those to create grains. But mainly we go over most of the functions and features of this brand new module. I’d like to make a video with more patch ideas and sound demos in the future, so let me know if you have specific wishes!

    For the record, your method of delivery and graphic illustration are very much appreciated! There is plenty of room for both academic and creative tutorials on the www, as well as any other approach. I also look forward to your hinted-at forthcoming creative/patch-based review of this module.

      Thank you very much! I think so indeed. In most of my videos I focus more on the concept of a module or technique, and show patch ideas. This video is a bit more dry, but because it's new I thought a lot of people would be curious to know just how it works. And I need some more time to get creative with it myself before doing the next video! All the best :)

      Hello there! Glad you like it, still plan to come back to this module with some more audio focused patches, if only I had some time :) Anyway, I think both modules have different focus points. Arbhar might be more suitable for real time sculpting. I think the ADDAC excels at having and SD card, folders with files etc, it feels more like a work station.

    Hi! I’d like to see how percussive grains of an audio loop can be selected/isolated and processed with CV. Have you found musical ways to morph between presets as you turn the preset knob? I’d like to see your favorite usage of attenuation to create audio dynamics that sound unique to this module. So grateful for your channel🙏🏾

      Great suggestion! That's a bunch of things though :) I planned to get back to this module soon after I made this more basic manual-style video, but I'm really short on time. If I get back to it I might just do a series of favorite patches. There is so much to cover with this one!

    Loving your videos! I bought it on a whim and it has been sitting in the box, unopened for a week. I’m having a little buyers remorse/concerned about the relative lack of videos on this module as compared to other eurorack loopers/granular processors. Most of the videos seem to be from people who were sent this module for review, then sent it back. Also, there seem to be more posts about bugs than praise. I probably should have figured this out before buying… Did you keep this? I realize this is a loaded, personal question but are there similar (ish) modules you like more? How did you navigate the reported bugs or did a firmware update fix them? Thanks for your time and your continued efforts to produce high quality eurorack content. I’ve learned a ton!

      Hello! Thanks for your message and kind words on the channel :) Just a quick note, I love ADDAC and a lot of their line up. Quite some of their modules are among my favorites. They are super friendly, I'm happy to work with them and hope to keep doing so. But I am not associated with any company, and always happy to give my personal thoughts.
      This one is a tricky one for me. The module is super impressive and really feels like a great exploration-station. But the amount of options, details, and updates also have kept me from using it as a go-to granular effect. I think some of the other options are more popular because of their higher plug-and-wow effect. If you are after that, I would say to consider those other options. It's not a bad thing on the ADDAC though. It just isn't a module you can use without studying the manual, and the updated manual, and the updated updated manual. I think that puts a lot of reviewers and users off, simply because it takes a lot of time to do right, shamefully, I have to admit, even myself.
      I love working on this channel, and it's my main focus atm, but it also meant I have hardly any time even for my own music. So I planned to dive deeper into this, but just don't have the time. Anyway, I did keep it, and actually updated the firmware to the latest version a week ago! And I am re-organizing my time to open up more space for fun and experiments with the gear I have. So, I know it's an old promise by now, but still like to get back to this device. But I havn't yet, so can't comment on the latest firmware.
      Anyway, short answer: If you want an easy end-of-chain effect, consider other options. If you like to dive deep with recording, granular and deep modulation, don't leave it in the box. It's a beautiful machine. But don't open it until you have like a long relaxed weekend do dive in. The first hour(s) will probably be confusing, reading things and updating the firmware.
      Cheers!

      Hi there! Don't know if I understand correctly but only one loop/sample at a time, and it's not polyphonic! There can be up to 17 grains at the same time, but that doesn't work like polyphony.

    Obviously some modules are more complex than others. Some are quite deep and require a lot of head scratching. This module is not the most sophisticated, but its range of operation adds to the ability to grok it. While your verbal presentation here was great (as always), the sonic presentation lacked a great deal. In my opinion. Some time could have been spent to design sounds that would be more representative of the module’s functions. Thanks.

      @@MonotrailTechTalk no problem! I’ve been watching your videos - you have a real talent for clear and easy to follow explanations! You’re going to blow up soon when the rest of the modular community finds you. By the way, what are your thoughts on the 112 compared to something like the Lubadh + Arbhar?

    • @MonotrailTechTalk
      @MonotrailTechTalk  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks! And I really hope so, I'm ready for it and have a lot of plans if I can find the time :) Unfortunately I don't have a lot of experience with the instruo modules, but I have a reasonable picture of what they do. So take it with a grain of salt, but I'd say the Lubadh/Arbhar are very powerful for direct audio processing and mangling, more so than the 112. On the other hand the 112 is more of a workstation that makes it easy to make longer recordings, store them in banks and see on the screen what section of a sample you are using for grains and so on. So kind of similar ground, but I'd say they have a really different approach and workflow!

      @@MonotrailTechTalk Yea, i think the Addac is too dry and scientific for me. What i would prefer if the Bitbox would make sth. like a "Morphagene Mode", should be easy its more than halfway there, they would have to combine their slicer and granular modes and ad a few cv able parameters like reversing and pitching individual slices. I very much love the file management via screen and the many preset save slots, thats keeping me away from the Morphagene, navigating blind, reels, slices...
