The bass player is INSANE.
Him and Vinnie. In terms of rhythmic conception, the two Vs are just a level above everyone else.
Insane playing and fantastic transcription.. Virgil really loves quintuplets..
Unbelievable. Love the bass player reacting to Virgil's playing. What a band. Superb transcription.
I don't think you'll ever get enough credit for transcribing such intricate work! You're amazing man, great job!
Thank you!! :)
Dude. Insane transcribing chops.
Great work! Virgil is such a killer player.
Thanks Tim! Love your transcriptions :)
How it possible to transcribe it ??? Big honor to author! And of course one & only mr. Donati
omg, this channel is so useful for drummer.
please keep updating :)
2am in the morning and going crazyyyyy with this!!!!! :)
I know the feeling! 😁
338am and I'm watching it again
Give me 5 minutes, I'm gonna burn my drums down then I come back.
😂 I know that feeling...
Great job very good transcribing and amazing player we can learn so much from his playing WOW
I dated a gal two years ago who's best friend "dates" Virgil. Amazing guy in and out but not marriage material. He practices 10 hours a day and has for years and lets nothing get in the way of his pursuit of drumming perfection. This little clip really shows this dedication.
I can certainly believe that. Virgil is a product of natural talent plus extreme dedication and hard work!
So basically none of us are gonna be able to play it lol
Haha, true... But plenty of awesome ideas to steal :)
@@LeToplache007 piece of cake 😂
Lmaooooo
@@DailyChops I am gonna steal that idea/bar at 01:58 ;-)
@@MatthiasKnorrMusic 😂😂😂
Wow you also transcribed the bass, awesome thanks man!
Just saying, how good does Virgil look for his age? :D Legend. Drumming keeps you young!
Gavin is proof to that
Nice work, and as always Virgil is on another mind space... wow
gave a bass player a raise. whatever he's earning is not enough
Amazing! Greetings from Brazil!🇧🇷
ANOTHER ABSOLUTE OUTSTANDING TRANSCRIPTION JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, "5's (quintuplets) Madness"
Thank you, Todd! :)
I think it's hard to play it with a matched grip, but I can't believe it's a regular one! It's so cool!!!!!
Love that cymbal stroke at 1.56. Impressive.
the transcription is as virtuosic as virgil himself
I'm just relieved that he didn't use his dangerously difficult independence here. Also, you could transcribe it in 5/4 instead of Quintuplets to make things simpler. I think that the band might have felt it in 5 instead of Quintuplets. That would be way more easy to understand.
I want to see him replay it ...🙄😂 legend. Absolute legend
Muito bom!! manter o groove no baixo com o cara quebrando tudo na batera não é fácil. O Braguinha é o metrônomo do Virgil
Uma leve mudança, Virgil é o Metrônomo que a galera tem que tomar cuidado na hora de seguir ;)
Awesome 👏
The Best👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏#VirgilDonati #IlikeMusic
amazing job!

Vinnie Colaiuta has entered the chat.
yeyeye, good luck learning
Wicked!!!!!
It's very cool 😲😲😍😍😍😍😍
Just a magic
HUAOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Please make a video on which legendary drummers i should listen to. I grew up in an environment where I didn't get much exposure to drumming. I need some inspiration at least in basic genres.
PLEASE.
There are so many amazing drummers, past and present… so many people to listen to! I would look at Modern Drummer’s article ‘The 50 Greatest Drummers of All Time’ for inspiration: www.moderndrummer.com/article/march-2014-50-greatest-drummers-time/
Or try the 'top 500 drummers' list on Drummer World: www.drummerworld.com/drummerchoice.html
Virgil!!!!!
Niceeeee
Is the base player counting 5/4 with 16th notes?
I think 1:53 is RKRK switching between mid tom and floor tom, right?
My head hurts
Phenomenal transcription skills! 👏🥁 What software do you use to synchronize the score to the video?
Thank you! Adobe After Effects :)
DailyChops Thanks for you answer! Okay, so you “manually” make the score move? I thought there maybe was a score program/app that synchronized it. Looks amazing!
@@Wildoerfaren Thanks! Yes, I do it manually. I used to use programs that do it automatically, but was never satisfied with the results, so I did it myself. :)
DailyChops I see. Thanks for answering again! Keep up the amazing work!
Why are there 2 lines of drum notes? The bottom one seems to be what he is playing, but i can't figure out what the top line is for.
The top line is the bass riff :)
Thank you!
Not agree at 1’18 = are you sure it is quintuplets ?
Yes, it’s definitely still quintuplets. He’s doing an implied metric modulation to 4/4 by playing groups of 4 through the quintuplets. Such is the awesomeness of Virgil Donati :)
DailyChops yes this guy is incredible . I think to me it is the best technical drummer I know , far from the others
This is a good transcription, but I have a question. Instead of writing quintuplets, why not just write it as some multiple of 5/16? Way easier to see/think about.
That’s a very good question, and certainly something that I considered - you could definitely count or ‘feel’ it in this way. However, the riff is, at least to me, clearly based around a 4/4 groove and so it wouldn’t make sense - musically speaking - to write it in 5/16. This is exemplified in the section at 2:05. Also, imagine how you would write this section out if it were in 5/16!
@@DailyChops I hear ya. And that may very well be how they're thinking it too. At the same time, 20/16 would look almost exactly the same and it divides just as evenly into 4. The only part of the section you linked that would be interesting to write in 20/16 would be the slow part. The straight 8ths could be 2-tuplets and the 16ths would then be 4-tuplets, which is how that sounded to my ears.
And I suppose the guiding point behind my very annoying comment is that if the entire rhythmic basis of a song is an odd time, it makes more sense to me to write it as n/(4/8/16) or whatever rather than constantly notating an n-tuplet. The best example I can think of is 12/8 vs 4/4 + triplets.
@@flanger001 Not an annoying comment at all - it’s a valid argument and makes for an interesting discussion! 😊
Yes, 20/16 could work, though for me this would certainly make things more complicated rather than any less so. I think it all comes down to personal preference and interpretation.
12/8 vs 4/4 is a good argument, and again depends on your preference rather than there being any ‘correct’ answer. For example, a blues drummer might be more used to 12/8, whereas a jazz drummer might be more used to seeing triplets. I would be interested to know how you would write a half-time/Purdie shuffle… as triplets in 4/4 or 12/8? (both of which would show the half-time/two-feel quality; i.e. backbeat on beat 3) or perhaps sextuplets in 4/4 with the backbeat on 2 & 4? (this may better convey the harmonic movement of the music).
However, from listening to clinics and interviews with Virgil, he tends to think in 4/4 a lot, regardless of the crazy subdivisions he plays, so I would argue that his preference would be for quintuplets. See his explanation of ‘Voice of Reason’ for example, here: czcams.com/video/cuC-LXe0HCI/video.html
In any case, the only way to find out for sure would be to ask him 😊
you could call this a 4/20 time signiture
6/8
Can I get bass loop for this track? I'm ur new subscriber.
5??????
Yep. Quintuplets 😅
진짜 개쌉지린다 ㅇㅈ?
If they ever make a full song out of this and they don't call it Quintuplet (or something related to five) I'll be very disappointed
I'm so curious what program to use?
Do you draw sheet music yourself?
Please give me an answer
Yes, I do it all myself :) I write the scores in Sibelius
Hi~ great videos!!! can you tell me what are you using to make the dark background / white notes transcription please?
Thanks! Notated in Sibelius, and animated in after effects.
@@DailyChops thanks for your reply!
Is the goal to play along like in Rock Band?
Yep 😂
Awesome transcription! I'm just wondering, why did you notate it in quintuplets? Because at least part of it is in 'just' 5/4 (=riff in groups of 5 16th notes), you can see the head of the bass player nodding quarter notes (I've been experimenting with this metric stuff in my recent song "Five High", obviously not on the level of these guys, but still.) But apart from that, GREAT stuff!!
Good question. I think this is the most clear way of notating it, for a number of reasons, and reflects what Virgil is thinking (if anyone knows, lol!). I had a long discussion about this with Dave Shaffer, below, so hopefully that explains my thinking :)
@@DailyChops Ah sorry, although I did scroll through the comments before posting, I missed the discussion with Dave. Yeah, basically I'm on the same page, I guess. Overall, I think you're right that this the best visual, most clear way of notating, but at the same therefore it LOOKS even harder than it already is, musically/rhythmically speaking (especially for non-experienced players). Or put in other words, a quintuplet will freak me out, but a grouping of 5 16 notes, no problem at all. But I think you know what I mean. As I did some solo transcriptions myself (I'm a pro drummer) in the past, I know what a ridiculous amount of work it is, so hats off, sir. Thanx! M
@@DrummerMartijn yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I always find it fascinating learning about the preferences of other drummers - it's always strange to hear how another person's perception of music is totally different from one's own. And, similarly, how drummers as a whole have their own unique way of writing/interpreting things. For example, (most) drummers prefer to read music where all the stems are pointing upward (rather than switch at the middle line), assuming there is only one part on the stave, that is :)
So that's what you were doing last year, ok...

Your transcriptions are amazing, the playing is killer but the transcription is mental. How bout the Tokyo concert Virgil starting :17 sec. With the red drums and the sky toms. Or Nate wood live playing here czcams.com/video/z_UCQIVDbrg/video.html anyways just some suggestions. Killer work really amazing!
