    This is a good level of demonstrations to get an orientation to these cameras. I chose the AX700 version because I already have money in audio recorders like the Tascam DR-70D, DR-40 and Zoom H1 ($20 used). They can be patched into the AX700 to get a clean sync recorded by the camera. I had expected to operate from a tripod for important work so I rig all the accessories on to that.
    One thing I did last year (third year of ownership) was to put tiny circular dots of hook and loop material on certain buttons to tell them apart from the rest by feel:
    Power - because of the number of times I accidentally hit that one and kill the camera.
    #2 Status Check is assigned to Menu - so I am not stretching a finger out past the display to the actual Menu button.
    AF/MF on the side of the lens, something I frequently change back and forth; and
    #6 that I have turning on/off Focus Peaking.
    I also got a dummy battery and fabricated a $10 NP-F battery plate plus a few feet of cable to a 5.5 mm barrel connector matched to the dummy battery and a $2 "batter tester" soldered in with 5 levels of LEDs. A spring steel belt clip on the back to hang it on the tripod or clothing and I'm good using NP-F550s and F750s. The original battery actually gives me good recording time on its own.
    My one gripe about the camera's build is the hinge for the display seems very weak. The closure is not firm enough to the body at all so I'm afraid it will get caught one of these times and get levered enough to break. I store it every time with an elastic band pulling the display panel in to the body. It's that loose.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  Před 2 lety

      I did have to look up one or two things before I got started.
      I don't use a helmet or anything for recording welding arc shots. I do have a clear filter on the front to protect the lens from errant sparks/spatter. I have the camera in manual and set to manual focus. I will set the camera up and manually focus right on the middle of the spot where I'm going to weld. Then I manually set the Iris to 8.0 to 10.0, the gain as low as it will go ( -3 dB ) and the shutter to 1/576 to 1/1200 of a second. Then I turn the built-in ND filter to the highest setting and start recording. This is generally a good starting point. From there I may adjust up or down slightly, depending on what I'm welding and how much amperage.

    This was the best deep dive I've seen! Thank you! I used this on a camp promo project a few years back and fell in love with it. I've been using a Z6 for filming car to car shots on a custom hitch+ stabilizer mount and I'm happy to say I ordered the Ax700 and it's on its way. The thing that really irked me about using the Nikon was that it'd only output HDMI signal in the standard frame rates. • @bigtb1717

    @PurpleMoosePlays Před 3 měsíci

    This was amazing, just upgraded from the AX43 to this one and was a bit concerned with all the additional flexibility in this one, but this answered all of the big questions I had. One small question (assuming you’re still following this), in the AX43 if I turn on auto exposure and then switch to manual, the manual setting starts from whatever the auto had set things too, and I can adjust things from there. Do you know if this one has the ability to do that as well? Or will it switch into some other default manual setting when I switch off auto Fstop/ISO/shutter speed?

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  Před 3 měsíci

      Honestly, I never use full auto with this camera, so I can't recall. But I think manual mode goes back to however it was when you last used it. However, within manual mode, you can set ISO, shutter speed, and aperture/f-stop all to automatic and exposure will then be adjusted automatically. From there you can switch any one of those things into manual and start adjusting from wherever it had it.

    • @PurpleMoosePlays
      @PurpleMoosePlays Před 3 měsíci

      @@bigtb1717 Thanks, that last sentence is exactly what I was asking. I don't want to go full auto, but mostly because I don't like the camera adjusting things on the fly while I'm recording, because then you occasionally get weird fluctuations in light levels as the environment changes. That said, going from a single exposure setting in the AX43 to a mix of three exposure settings that I need to learn more about is a bit daunting, so I was hoping I could basically turn each of those individually to auto (in the manual mode) and then switch them back to manual to effectively lock in that setting for the entirety of the video, making slight changes as needed.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  Před 3 měsíci

      You can do exactly that. I think I talked briefly about it in the video, but there are dedicated buttons for each of those settings. If you press one of those buttons you can highlight that setting and make changes as desired. Or you can simply press the button again and put that setting back into auto. Each setting can individually be put in auto or manually changed at any time. All this can be done while the main "Manual/Auto" switch on the back is in the manual mode. It's one of the things I like so much about this camera.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @PurpleMoosePlays As for learning those exposure settings, I have some older videos where I talk about each setting. It is labeled as "DSLR" settings, but the principals are the same for any camera. They may help.

      czcams.com/video/eRfkcgGsdEQ/video.html

      There are videos for shutter speed, aperture (f-stop), and ISO. I'm sure there are a million and 1 other videos about these things online too that may help. So you don't have to watch mine, lol. I'm sure you can get the hang of it. Cheers!

    I recently purchased this camera at Sony Chile (where I'm based) for my dad's watch repairments and assembly work. Thank you for clearing things out and going through the entire menu/settings. The versatility of this camcorder is insane. I didn't know that many of the greyed-out settings were due to being only enabled for 1080p res. I haven't owned a Sony in over a decade and was very unfamiliar with the labels. It is not a perfect camera though (no cam is really), and if Sony decides to update it, I wish they include 4K@60 10bit 4:2:2 color (HDR). Sony will probably add 8K and charge more. I'm still trying to figure out how to upload HDR (HLG pic profile 10) to CZcams because directly from the .mp4 file does NOT work. Does it need to be rendered forcibly at 10bit through non-linear editing software to work on TY? Keep the excellent content!

    • @bigtb1717

    Thanks for this video. I shoot on all of Sony's latest mirrorless cameras in full manual, so having to operate this camera for a part time job has felt a little goofy. At this job, they want the camera's SCENE SELECTION SET to NIGHT SCENE. I'm wondering what is going on under the hood and if it is at all related to NIGHT SHOT. My best observation so far is that NIGHT SCENE drops the shutter speed/angle as low as the frame rate will allow, but the colors still look weird too. Not sure if that's just because of the auto WB... Any input? Thanks again.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  Před rokem +1

      As you say, I believe night scene drops the shutter speed and allows the gain (ISO) to go a bit higher (allows it to max out at 33 instead of 27, or somewhere around there). I can't say for sure what else it does, but if there is color weirdness, I would guess it is upping the saturation a bit to counter the slightly more subdued colors you get in low light in general and especially at higher gains. I can't say that for sure though. It's also possible it's just the auto white balance struggling a bit in low light, as you say.
      Night shot is something totally separate. Night shot will remove the IR filter and switch to a green night vision look. It would be unmistakable if that was turned on.

      Sort of. In the "S&Q" mode (which stands for Slow and Quick), you can choose high framerates for slow motion and low framerates for a sped up look. It will almost be like a time lapse, but it's closer to the "hyperlapse" feature that some action cameras have. The framerate can be set as low as 1 frame per second. So it would be a fairly quick time lapse, but there's no way to take a single frame every 30 seconds or once a minute or even five minutes or something like that for a longer time lapse.

      The sensors aren't the same. The AX700 has a 14 megapixel sensor, the ZV-1 is 20 megapixel. The ZV-1 is also three years newer, has more autofocus points and surely has different processing and software. It's also a different lens.
      I haven't used the ZV-1, so I can't say how comparable the autofocus is. But I wouldn't be surprised if the ZV-1 had autofocus improvements vs. the AX700. Can't say for sure or how much different it is though.

      I currently use Davinci Resolve. Before that, I used Power Director. Before that I used Vegas. All have their pros and cons, but it has been so long since I've used Vegas and a number of years since I've used Power Director, so it's tough for me to recommend for or against them these days, because I'm sure stuff has changed. At the time when I switched to Davinci Resolve from Power Director, I would say PD was easier to use. Certain things were just more intuitive. But I switched to Davinci because I wanted the color grading options for some formats that PD didn't support. Since then, Davinci has gone through several version upgrades and almost all of what made PD more intuitive to use is now just as easy on Davinci. There were also little audio clicks between cuts in PD that are not present in Davinci. But again, it has been a long time since I used PD, so it surely has gone through some revisions since then as well.
      Back when I used Vegas (back when it was still Sony Vegas), I really liked it. I don't remember exactly why I switched, but that was MANY years ago, so I have no idea what Vegas is like these days.

      Unfortunately, this camera cannot do 60 FPS in 4K, only 24, 25, or 30 FPS. It's still capable of excellent quality, but the actual framerate is limited to 30FPS in 4K. The higher framerate really only helps with a certain, perceived motion smoothness (when viewed at 60FPS on a display that is running at least 60Hz). It can also help the video look smoother when slowed down.
      60 vs. 100 Mbps refers to the data rate of the video. 100 Mbps will be higher quality and the files will be larger.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  Před rokem +1

      Sorry, I know this isn't more clear in the video, but I'll give a very quick overview here.
      Optical zoom: This zoom is accomplished entirely in the lens. There is theoretically no loss of image quality or resolution with optical zoom. This will depend on lens quality, but the lens in this camera is very good. This is the best type of zoom.
      Clear Image zoom: This is accomplished by cropping in on the sensor, while technically not dropping resolution. The sensor has more pixels than are strictly required for the resolution the camera is recording at. Clear image zoom crops into the sensor, but only as far as it can without losing resolution. So once you are at the maximum "clear image" zoom, you are only using the actual number of sensor pixels that are required for the resolution you are recording at. There may be a slight loss in image quality because the camera can no longer "oversample" from a larger number of pixels. But the drop in quality should be relatively small since there isn't technically a drop in resolution.
      Digital zoom: This is similar to just cropping in on the video in a video editor after the fact. The camera may apply some type of processing to minimize the quality loss, but there will be a drop in resolution and a drop in image quality.
      Hopefully this helps.

      No problem. I think the main thing will be to maintain a relatively low shutter speed (twice the frame rate, so a frame rate of 30 fps would use a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second). This allows for a natural looking motion blur. Many cameras (especially when pointing at a bright sky) will crank the shutter speed really high to maintain proper exposure. This can result in the props look like they aren't spinning, or are spinning slowly. This camera has built-in ND filters, which allow you to darken the exposure, allowing the use of a motion-blur friendly shutter speed.

      If you want to delete individual videos, press the thumbnail button to get into the view mode. Use the directional stick to highlight the video you want to delete and press menu. The first option will be to protect or delete the video.
      You can also go into the menu and format either card, which would delete everything on the card at once.

    How many hours does a battery shoot video?

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  Před rokem

      I'm not sure if there are larger batteries available, but I just have the standard battery. The battery is probably four or more years old at this point. I don't remember if it was significantly better when new, but I'd say probably around two hours. I don't normally record long, continuous videos with it though, so it's tough for me to say for sure. I do often have it out in the garage with me all day, using it off and on throughout the day and battery life is never an issue at all. But again, even if I end up with a couple dozen clips at the end of the day, they probably average a couple minutes each.

      It doesn't turn on when you extend it? Does it turn the camera on when you extend it? Is the camera new or used?

      @@bigtb1717 hey if I extend the viewfinder with the lcd closed. It powers up the unit but the viewfinder is dark. It’s used. Power up also when I open the lcd screen.

      @icecorebaby Mine automatically turns on the viewfinder when I pull it out. Obviously it detects that the viewfinder is extended, because it turns on. Sounds like something isn't working properly.

    Is this camera worth it in 2024?

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  Před 5 měsíci

      I can't speak for everyone's needs and use case, but I still use mine regularly. However, I will say that recently I noticed that it's not available from the "usual suspect" retailers. Places like B&H and others no longer list it, or only list the gray market version. I suspect it may be discontinued by Sony. My hope is that it will be replaced, but it seems like a lot of the camera brands are moving away from "camcorders." I hope it's not just an abandoned product and is actually slated to be replaced with a new, improved model.
      So be careful if you go looking for one. I find that it's very common when a product is initially discontinued that places that still have stock tend to jack up the price because there are suddenly no other listings to compare to and realize they are over-charging. I certainly don't think it's worth overpaying for in 2024, lol.
      Even at the "regular" price, it would really depend on your use case on whether or not it was worth it to you. I have gotten a TON of use out of mine and see no reason why I would stop using it. But there are cheaper options out there, depending on your needs.

      I'm sure it isn't going to be right for everyone. Personally, I have no problem operating the joystick while holding the camera. My thumb rests pretty much right on it. But it may be a consideration for some. Thanks for the input.

    I hate the fact about the majority of the camcorders from Sony it is the battery be external. It gives an unsafe feeling and that pisses me off 😤😤 (sorry for the language🤭)

      I think the idea is that Sony or third parties can make larger capacity batteries and they just extend a bit further. For what it's worth, I'm not super hard on my cameras, but I've been using this one a LOT for years and I've never had an issue.
