I also really miss having the vertical grip for the Z6 and would probably have held out if there wasn’t a real option for a V grip.

I think for us Nikon enthusiast, and D750 user, this upgrade disappoints somewhat by not having a grip option. We’re losing an important capability.

The last time we met up was at Grays (London) when you brought along the Z7’s during the launch. Since the Z6 was released, I’ve been using my copy pretty much non-stop; I agree the 24-70 f/2.8 is an amazing lens, but I also get a lot of use from my f/4 copy too, particularly as walk around. Today I placed myself on the wait list with Grays for the 70-200mm f/2.8, so looking forward to this lens.
However, coming from a different position, I’m now looking to trade my DSLR’s & lenses and move entirely to the Z mirrorless. Yes I appreciate the lens quality, but its the reduction in weight and form factor that’s key to my event photography futures. Playing the waiting game to fill out the lens line-up is less of a problem with FTZ and access to the F-mount glass until the Z-mount equiv’s are released.
Your smirk when you mentioned the new 70-200 is priceless. Can’t wait to see your review on it.

I bought my Z7 thinking it would be my secondary camera to my beloved D850. Once I started using it with the incredible z lenses the D850 became my secondary camera. I just preordered the 70-200 f2.8s and I don’t see myself going back to DSLRs
I bought the z6 just to try it out while I still on the Nikon D800 and the Nikon D7100. I was going to switch over to Sony and buying A7R3 and sell all my Nikon cameras and lenses. But if I did like the Z6 I was going to use it as a secondary camera to my d800 cuz I just loved the images it produced. The first day I tried it I was sold on how accurate and sharp the images left hand held. Beating my Nikon D800 easily. And I love how the adapted lenses worked on it. A week later they released the firmware update for the eye auto focus and I was a believer. I sold my D7100 and my Nikon D800 is my back up which I’ve barely use except for black and white images only. After six months of burning it I finally decided to invest on some of the Z mount lenses and the 50 & 85mm f1.8S lenses are extremely sharp and the eye AF works even better with the native lenses. I am not sold yet on the new 70-200 S lens due to I use the Tamron 70-200 G2 adapted to the Z6 and it produces some of the most amazing images I have taken. If I’m going to spend that much I am going to save a little more and pick up the Nikon 200 mm F2 and adapt it to the z6. I don’t know if I will switch completely over to mirrorless cuz I just love the d800 still. But I think I will pick up another z6 or maybe a Z7 for work. But you are right the mirrorless cameras are hard to beat.
I just bought a second Z6 and the 85mm f/1.8S. I also have the 50mm f/1.8S and 14-30 f/4.0. I still have some f-mount glass and a D800 (now have 2 FTZ adapters) but I agree -- it's the superb Z-mount lenses that have me sold on Z.
Agree good lenses on Z - although interesting to see how good the D780 & D6 in Live View coupled with some legacy F mount glass - AF-S, AF-P & E lenses. Although think that price of D780 will fall quickly to be on par with Z6 to generate more sales and interest for Nikon.
I have been using mirrorless for years, but I still absolutely LOVE the DSLR experience.
In fact I think I prefer it, and I can’t even put my finger on why.
I was shooting the Nikon Df the other day and for me it’s the most underrated camera of all time.
I love my Fujifilm and Olympus mirrorless cameras, but I’m always drawn back to DSLR.

I agree. Itried to go Z for six months, many bodies, and I came up with the summary that it is disconnected/detached from traditional photography. IF Nikon had followed a bit more of the DSLR button layout it would make a huge difference. The D780 is more usable right out of the box, but no CFE, no flash controller, has a cheap feeling plastic mode dial, no articulating screen (I like to flip them over, and shoot overhead with the LCD at 90 degrees,) and overpriced.

Yeah... great discussion. I am one of those persons that has to decide between D.780 and the Z6. As I have a number of Nikon F mount lenses, it is not an easy decision... What is the weatherproofing like to be the D.780 compared to the Z.6?. Does the sensor on mirrorless likely to attract more dust particles, than a DSLR....?
I'd really appreciate a video about shooting fast moving wildlife with a Z6 or Z7. I must confess, I haven't figured out how. Yeah in a series of shots I can get a few sharp ones, but no where near as many as I can get with my D500, so I keep using the DSLR. Off topic from this video, I know, but you did mention that you use the Z cameras for wildlife.

I believe it is important to clarify that mirrorless systems are not yet able to compete with DSLR system at AF level. I work with both systems and my advice to those who are serious about wildlife photography is to invest in the mirror system. However, the Z6 and Z7 are great cameras for many other styles of photography.
I'm not going to get into a debate between DSLRs and mirrorless. Everyone has their own preferences. I have too. I'm staying with the DSLRs, and the only thing that would make me switch to mirrorless is if my current Nikon DSLRs fail (which is wildly improbable, since they have a total unexpired shutter count in excess of 350,000 and I'm not likely to live long enough to use them all) and I can no longer buy replacements for them.
We've now reached a stage where all this talk of more pixels or "better" lenses no longer translates into anything I can see in the prints from my photos. Of course I am not a pro, so I have no reason to print larger than A3. And I'm sure there are people (like you, for example, Ricci) who need something more. If ever I decided to look for something different, it would more likely be a Hassy, or one of those Foveon censored SIGMA's - to round out my experience of photography.
In the meantime, what I can produce with my D500 or D850 and the range of lenses I already have is little short of incredible, and there's no reason to consider changing.
All of which is irrelevant to the D750 - which I haven't tried, but seems to be a sensational camera - not merely an "upgrade"!
I am more than happy for people to enjoy their current cameras and get to know how to use their cameras better. I encourage it.
No one needs to “upgrade” from a d850 for a long long time!
@@RicciTalks LOL - this was on my desktop, so I had another look at it. I hope nobody got the impression I was throwing cold water on the D780. I think that if I was shooting with the D750 (and that's a very fine camera!) when the D780 was released, then after seeing the first reviews after it came out I would have ordered a D780 body online. and told my camera shop to deliver it!
I use both the D780 and Z6II. I use the DSLR because my favorite lens is the DC 105mm F2.0. I don't think there is a 105mm S-lens. It will be a long time before I feel that I want to use only mirrorless, and mind you, I really love the performance of the Z6ii, except for the way I shoot, it is very slow to come alive out of sleep mode. I often wonder why the youtube pundits make it a one or the other proposition and yet as you did in this video said you use a Z50 and the Z7. I can image people using F-mount lens and Z-mount lens interchangeably. As long as I have D-lens that I like I'll use the D780, but I also love the Z6II.
Continuous af seems to suck in mirror less cameras. D780 solves all this but it’s the price that ruins it
I was using a D5500 for the last few years, as my photography improved I started thinking about moving to full frame, the D780 was going to be my camera of choice, but after watching a few of your videos I was persuaded to go for the Z6, lockdown gave me the chance to save a little faster, I was going to get it for Christmas, but I have had the Z6 for 12 days now, and I am completely in love with it, the EVF is amazing, I having missed a single shot yet because of It, the ability to see in real time how adjustments to shutter speed and aperture affect your images is brilliant for someone very early in their photography journey, and the 4K video is just astonishing.
You guys need to take heed of what Northup observed. Nikon has a massive library of vintage glass out there, a lot of which is yet to be matched in the S line, or never will be, and that a huge number of photographers, both pro and amateur, desire to use them within their native environment or as close to that as possible. I was going to "upgrade" my 750 to a Z7 until I realized that the FTZ would not autofocus my AF-d lenses, all primes. Autofocus isn't mandatory in what I shoot (product, macro, 'scape) so loosing it wouldn't be determinative and the same for EVF, but I went with the 850, the 750 becoming backup. I am looking at the 780 for the simple fact that the live view screen is the same resolution as the 850 and that the "new" sensor/processor probably affords a greater dynamic range. I think Nikon did the research and realized that 50 years of product cohesiveness was not smart to walk away from.
Since something like 90% of nikon users are still DSLR users, Nikon needed a DSLR body that shows dslr users the advantages of mirrorless and the features of the mirrorless system. Most people don't fall in love with the Z series until they use it and experience the features. To me, this body falls in as a transitional body to introduce Nikon's DSLR users to mirrorless
This is exactly what I thought. Loved the EVF on my Z6 with the WYSIWYG and the histogram from the get go. But found myself taking a bunch of family pictures this holiday season using just the rear display...some with eye detect, some without. Just loved the flexibility of shooting easily and quickly from different angles. I can imagine some DSLR users seeing how well this works and understanding how well the mirrorless system can work.
Hello Ricci!You made a very interesting statement. I aggree 100% with your thoughts.I do still shoot my D500. I do mostly Sports (Basketball), Wildlife and Landscape. I love the AF performance of my D500 and the more compact Body of the crop camera.I would love to by a Z6 and move completely into the mirrorless world including lenses as the Z lenses do outperform the F mount competitors.But I'm still not 100% convinced if the AF Performance of the Z6 will give me the same amount of perfect results as my D500.Maybe you can tell a little more about your practical experiences of these two bodies compared against each other.

When the photography industry went from film to digital the fundamental substrate of photography changed for forever, and it changed lightning quick. Mirrorless cameras are not going to fundamentally change the world of photography because they still produce a digital image. This D780 is a very attractive offering by Nikon and as a D750 shooter I would love to have one. This camera will be a long term staple for Nikon just like the D750. These days it’s all about glass! BTW I still shoot with glass that was strapped on my Nikon Film camera from 20 years ago.
Yeah, but for the next twenty more years, you may wish you have started building your muscle memory and experience in shooting with a Mirrorless camera sooner. While it is true for a Nikonian like me for over four decades, you are still too young not to switch now. Just as I did switch from film to digital back in 2000 with a Canon D30 and later the Nikon D3. 😊
if it's all about the glass, then you should educate yourself and try a Z lens. You'll never post this opinion again.
I'm a D750 user and If you are the OVF D750 shooter, then D780 doesn't give you much upgrade over it. The updated processor, exposure meter, dual gain ISO, 1/8000 are nice, but AF pretty much remained the same if you don't use something like full auto AF or 3D tracking. The removal of battery grip let me go "huh"?
If you are a hybrid shooter than Z6 is a cheaper, lighter and more "future proof" option if you don't mind the EVF and one XQD card slot.
D780 is a missed opportunity for Nikon. All they had to do is to keep the battery grip option and we will have pretty much nothing (maybe apart from AF module, no pop-up, no joystick and SD card slot being not XQD/CFast) to complain about. I mean we will always find something to complain about, but that's ok.
Removing features will give you bad press. Simple as that. Nikon mentioned wedding photographers so many times in the press release, yet they removed the battery grip option.....It's one of those life's mystery, I suppose.
Having said all these, I still think I'll buy the D780 after the price has dropped a bit. It will acts as a transitional camera before I got the Z6Mk2. While it doesn't give me much useful update over my D750, but the issue is that it has over 260K clicks on it. God knows when it is going to fail and I still have AF-D lenses I would like to keep using. Well, maybe I just answered my own question
I'm a hybrid Nikon event shooter using a D750. I've tried the Z6 and didn't like it for stills AF so the D780 offers me the best of both worlds. Good video AF good stills AF better battery life bigger body with better ergonomics (person preference). Only disappointments are the price (that will drop significantly IMHO) and the second slot doesn't backup video.
@@markshirley01 Yeah, sure. Basically what you got is the Z6 + D750 combined together. One is from 2014(with bits from 2007) and the other is from 2018-ish. This is why in the way, I don't think it's an appealing upgrade on paper.

Reminiscing in late 2024, the appeal of DSLR has hit its nostalgia for me, I love my z8 but I have great f mount lenses which feel nicer on DSLR.

I was a D850 user (still am) and I bought the Z6 at launch mostly because I wanted to use the 24-70 f4 (which has not disappointed). While I love the D850, the DSLR ergonomics and the OVF, I find myself wanting to trade in my D850 for the Z7 due to how great the Z glass is (I also have the 50mm 1.8S). I never thought I would like using a small body, but much as I love the D850 in the hand, I don't miss it when I'm using the Z6. Nikon's done a great job I think with the ergonomics, and with the quality of the Z lenses so far that I see my future with the Z bodies.
Thanks Ricci, great to hear your thought. I’ve got a D750 and my wife uses a Z6 so for me personally I’ll go mirrorless when I’m ready. I totally get the D780 and can see this appealing to many DSLR shooters and can see wedding photographers absolutely loving it.

I am with you on the mirrorless Z platform. I really love my Z6. I love the IBIS, EVF and WYSIWYG, but mostly I love the results that I can get from the Z6 body with Z S lenses. I really enjoy this camera. The 780 will appeal to the 2 card folks, and F mount folks, but I am locked into the Z platform.
I would be able to use my favorite 105mm F2 DC lens with eye AF on this camera but I like having the camera up to my eye. What would really solve my issue would be a motor equiped FTZ adapter.
My only concern with a screw drive FTZ adapter is the impact it will have on the battery life.
@@Tr4llf4zz Very true, but you could always use the MB-N10 external battery. They built it because of the single battery life when doing video but it would be good to power a motorized FTZ. I'd do it in a heartbeat.
I am getting back into photography now that I have retired. I have been using a d7000 for some time and wanted a full frame camera. I was waiting for the d750 replacement and in the meantime looked into the z6 and thought to myself that this is in fact the replacement for the d750 with some advantages. I can still use some of my older f mount lenses until I can afford z mount. Since I bought it and have looked a lot of reviews on the cameras and especially the lenses, I believe I made the right choice for me. I am primarily into landscape and some of the z series complaints don't apply to me.
Im in the exact same position.... I have a d7000.... I want to upgrade. I bought a 70-200mm Sigma F2.8. Cant decide between D750/D780. Value for money?
@@kwesphotography2359 the D780 has exactly the same sensor as the D750. The difference between the two cameras is largely whistles & bells. They both produce the same resolution digital images. The only other difference is price. A used but 'like new' D750 with a shutter counter
Wont change to a mirrorless anytime soon as im too invested in all my F glass. I bought them all at superb prices considering people are going mirrorless. I dont think the difference in quality will be too drastic and definitely not worth the money right now. In a couple of years once the market gets filled up with more second hand mirrorless bodies and z lenses then ill make the transition. Absolutely happy with the amazing photos im getting so far. :)

You’d not hear an analysis like this back in the film days(yes I’m in that age group). Today we are accustomed to scrutinizing each and every shot taken on our high definition monitors thus, easily dissect the images down to the last pixel. This is not to say that I’m opposed to progress; I have started to build my Z gear, but still holding on to some of my F favourites.

Owner of a d7200 and in a big doubt... 780 or z6, Your open and positive reactions on the mounts makes me realize more about the future of the z series. First CZcamsr I've see who has a D780 in hand. Didn't realize production was already finished.
Given the size of the D750 user base, even in 2020, it seems like the D780 was made for this demographic. Have a hard time seeing many from any other demographic (Nikon DSLR shooters) adding any significant numbers to the unit sales figures, but given that DSLRs still comprise well over 90% of Nikon's (98%?) cameras in current use, it's good to see continued support with the D6 and the D780.

Picked up a Z6 over in HK and didn't fully utilize it until a couple days later in Singapore, I was really impressed with it and the 24-70 F4! I got the D500 in hopes of doing video but, as we all know the video autofocus was horrid, so I gave up un that idea. I've been thinking of trading in the D500 for the Z50 however, I might just get a second Z6 and sell some of my F mount lens to invest in some more Z lens. I figure I would use one body with the FTZ adapter and one solely for Z lens. If I go Z50, I think that would be my travel camera and the one I use with the FTZ adapter. I am so enamored with the Z6, I'm really thinking of getting another however, right now, getting some more lens appeal to me more.

I'm thinking about getting it. Getting a DSLr today (at least on youtube) is the same story as with the DF. Most reviewers poo poo'd that camera, but it's incredible, IMO. And since I don't have to choose between mirrorless and dslr, I don't see why not to have both especially since we really don't know the true longevity of the new electronic plastic they're putting out these days. In other words, I can get a mechanical AF (or MF) lens for 1/10th the price with 5-7 glass elements that for all practical viewing purposes will be indistinguishable from a Z lens and it will last me a life time. Whereas, I can spend 2 grand on a plastic fantastic that has planned obsolescence built in. Obviously, most teenage vloggers will disagree with this reasoning.

I really think Nikon made the right decision to go to the Z mount.
I think the F mount was holding them back in being able to make wide aperture lenses and fast and quiet autofocussing lesnes. The wider barell of the Z mount gives them more room. And there are more contacts.

I am a Z6 user, but I also own a Canon DSLR which I use for wildlife photography. I use the Z6 combined with the 24 - 70 f4 mainly for landscapes and cityscapes and I love the results.

abbb282 - I use a Nikkor 300mm f/4 with a 1.4 teleconverter and FTZ, making it 420 mm f/5.6. It’s a light setup easy to maneuver and will do until more Z lenses are introduced.
Hello and congrats upon your videos! Do you have any experience with the FTZ Adapter and third party lenses? I have the Tamron SP 24-70 f/2,8 VC and I 've been told that is having problems with the Z6. Same question about the D780. Does D780 work with 3rd party lenses F mount lenses (and particular the Tamron 24-70)?

Hi Ricci, honest and on-target. I understand that since the Z series can also adopt to legacy lenses there is actually a wider option for the Z-users. Between the Z6 & Z7, what is your preferred camera, maybe 90% of the time in your professional photo-shoot? Is the Z7 & Z6 auto-focus capability reliable enough for professional shoot? Compared to a D5 & D850, at what aspects would you rank Z7 & Z6 professional reliability? I have been holding on my purchase and waiting for developments like this TO fully weigh professional opinions. Your opinion matters to me Ricci. More power to your work and channel!!!
I am a Z6 user finally after using the D750 since it was first introduced. I loved the the latter camera, but have been blown away the Z6. I also still own a lot of AF-D glass because I still shoot with a F2 and am disappointed that only my large primes work with the Z6. I have pre-ordered the 70-00 2.8 VR S lens and currently have the 24-70 2.8s and all of the primes except the 58mm. I still own a D700 as well.
Hi Ricci! Late to the party and just bought a D780 and 105mm f/1.4 E. I have a Z7 for landscape and a Z6 for events and video. I expect Nikon to ultimately offer a professional grade mirrorless camera with full AF capabilities, but I expect it to be expensive and it may use the Z6/7 form factor (with "integrated grip"), which would be just a bit too small for my taste. I also expect Nikon to build very capable and optically flawless telephoto lenses, but above what I want to spend on the telephoto range. So I'm taking a bet on cheaper used F mount telephoto lenses (e.g. 300mm f/2.8) in the future. So my set #1 would be Z7 + 24-70 f/2.8 S + D780 + F mount primes, set #2 would be Z7 + the Z f/1.8 primes + maybe Z6 as backup and for avoiding changing lenses.

I've been hoovering up F mount primes from all the pros going Z. I have probably £5000 of gear that cost me hundreds. Starting to get startling results. I can't justify spending thousands on what is a hobby 😎
I shoot Canon for years and I do not want to switch to mirrorless. As the D780 is the latest DSLR made during the last years I think about switching to Nikon completely and sell all my Canon lenses. What do you think?

I’m waiting for 70-200 S 2.8 lens for Z. I’m on Z6...still having d850 but using it less and less. Z system gets better and better and the lenses are awesome...plus the video is fantastic. No way back to D780...But in the meantime I’m sure it’s a very good DSLR.
I like the photographs you caught of the Kingfisher in flight with your Z7. Would the Z6 be able to capture the same photo just as well ? Does the Z6 focus as quickly as the Z7 ?

Hey Ricci. How's the live view stills shooting on d780 compared to z6, is there any lag between pressing a shutter-release and actual capture (as on older dslr's), or is it more z6 like experience? Thanks you!
Hi Ricci. I'm going to be moving from apsc d7500 to mirrorless, so anything full frame will be an improvement to what I've already experienced. I like low light and astro, but also like the thought of higher resolution of the z7ii for landscape.
Is the noise of the z7ii perceptably worse than the z6ii, would it be enough to dissuade you from choosing it? Which one do you find you reach out for first, between your z6/7?
Sorry I should also mention I bought the sigma 150-600mm for BIF, so high iso favours the z6ii but interesting to see if you think the gap between the z6ii and z7ii is that noticeable.
I prefer the higher resolution and have no problems shooting the Z7ii at 10,000 iso
If I need to shoot 20,30,40,000 I will shit Z6ii but that’s very rare.
The extra MP detail is what I want the Z6ii can not match that

Are you planning to get one and if so will you use it both stills and video with F mount lenses. Interesting to see how good LV is and how well it works with current AF-S lenses, AF-P and E lenses.

The z mount lenses are crazy good . Good discussion . I recently changed for the d850 to the z6 . Even the 24-70 f/4 kit lens is crazy sharp and bokah .
I have the D780 and i am looking for a landscape lens. What kind of lens would you prefer for f- mount ?

I've a D500, D850 and a Z6 I'm sitting on the fence when it comes to the Z6. The D780 looks and sounds great though why they didn't go with two CF slots is beyond me.
I was disappointed with both the D500 and D850 for only having one XQD slot , I got use to using one slot so when the Z6 came out the one slot didn't bother me.
The D780 is a natural progression from the 600,610 and 750 but why didn't they call it a 760. I've never understood nikons prosumer and consumer numbering
Z lenses are great but look so cheap like Sigma and Tamron did a few years ago, a thousand pounds for a lens that looks and feels like it should cost £350.....
So much stuff out there.. I am looking to upgrade from Nikon D5200 (8 years old) - mainly do real estate photography plus occasional wildlife and sport. Not a flash fan.... Was thinking D 850 750 ? and now 780 :) Any suggestions - ?

Actually I have a Nikon D600 with a few lenses (Tamron 24-70, Sigma 70-200, Sigma 150-600 Sport, Nikon 28-300 and an old Tamron 90 Macro)
I like to shoot Sport and wildlife, but the problem for me passing to a Z camera is that I could use just my 150-600, because all the other lenses are not compatible 😕
That's the reason I was considering the D780
At the moment the Z system is very appealing, but for me, at the moment is a budget problem, changing all the lenses it would cost me a lot.
Quite all the lenses I bought were used, so at the moment the Z lenses are out of budget for me
I don't know if in the future is better if I'll buy a mirrorless as a second camera
WOULD have been a GREAT camera if it: was smaller (size of D5xxx with pro button layout,) had IBIS, had an articulating screen, warm LED flash controller, had the D500's focusing abilities, more AF area coverage, had CFE card support, and 42mp for shooting DX at 20mp. I hope Nikon makes one more prosumer DSLR that checks off ALL of the boxes. As well as a 28f2mm rangefinder pocket camera. As it is it can't replace a D500/D750 combo, and you can get both used for less.
However, for me the D780 proved how much I prefer the less distracting OVF, dimmer AF markers, and 1/3 grid. The D780 needs NO button remapping and was more usable right out of the box. The Z's are great cameras, but I just don't enjoy using them as much as my D500/D750. The II's have a much improved shutter design/sound few people mention. Sony lets you remap just about any button, has 7 user/memory settings. Nikon removed too many buttons and dials. The pro toggle switches around the buttons are so much better ergonomically! I'd also like a custom sound to use with the EFCS, which I can do with an Elf point-and-shoot. The playback/delete buttons needs to be moved to the right like every other manufacturer too. They got the z50 right, and that is my probably favorite among the Z's.
Sony offers decent and more affordable f4 glass. Canon covers the sensor when changing lenses. Nikon also needs offer a pro/better FTZ with two buttons and much lighter materials, but it should also be no more than $200.
I love that they're using mirrorless stuff in DSLRs, that's a hybrid technology I really look forward to, because I believe they will put in the D500/D850 successors as well. Finally Nikon will have decent video AF across their offerings. I do understand that they cut costs when it comes to battery grip, I think a lot of people cry online about it, but very few people actually buy that. So maybe for 90% of cameras in that segment it was a useless added cost. We all want Nikon to thrive for years to come, but the market is declining, and they need to cut costs somewhere, it's basic economics. One thing I don't like about the D780 is its weight: 840g vs the D750's 750g. Any idea why the 12% weight increase?

This is a comment and a question: I agree that the S Lenses a superb but my new 24mm S lens seems to produce a significant barrel distortion on certain compositions such as taking photos (RAW) of building and this seems to be more noticeable that when I was using my former D810 and 14-24mm f2.8 at 24mm. The question is: do I have a bad copy or these photos are expected to show distortion and in need of manual correction with editing software?
You may like to know I bought this lens on your recommendation at an exhibition in London a little while ago. Please advise.
The Z6 is the better camera. Since I sold my D750 I’ve never looked back... the D780 would have been a great upgrade if we were in 2017 BUT in 2019 I see no point on keep investing in a dying mount. The S lenses are far superior in every sense so why bother? Then there’s the price... for 300$ more you can get a D850 OR for the asking retail price you can get a D750 (that IMO can do 95% of what the D780 can do) + a Nikon Z6. Nikon is acting weird to try to recover market share in a declining market instead of going ALL IN with mirrorless. At least we are finally getting the new 70-200 :)

Has Nikon said whether the d780 will also be able to output 12-bit Prores Raw? If it is the same processor/sensor and can output the same video specs I would imagine there is no reason why not...but wouldn't be surprised if Nikon decided to just hold that back to steer people towards the z6 if they wanted that feature.
If budget would not be an issue, I would go Zmount all the way, but it is, Zmount glass is dirty expensive. So D780 is very welcome for me, also to adapt my older fglass. I still shoot D700 and was kinda waiting for this body.
Somebody remembers the Coolpix A! And yes, the Z50 is my replacement for CpA as well, although not as pocketable :/

Just waiting for 2 slots on Z series., In my area, i get asked at least once a weekend for the backup card, so i have no choice, when a customer asks, i have to provide it. I think its possible to move over from the D850, however having invested in 70-200ED FL recently i think i will be hanging on, until 2 slot version capable unit is out. I was even considering A9II but i simply am hanging on to see what Nikon come out with this year(lens investment and second hand return costs taken into account). D850 will need moving to my second body this year as its over 350,000 actuations already, so i am literally just waiting for an equivalent A9II or confirmation ones not coming this year to decide.
Time for a little client education. The XQD and CFExpress is considerably more reliable than 2 SD cards, in fact 2 orders of magnitude longer MTBF rating. That is why Sony even broke down and uses it in their pro-ENG cameras that start at $25,000, none with more than 1 slot. If they still follow internet gossip get the WT-7 wireless adaptor and have a near-real-time backup of raw files on any computer or access point within 660 feet. I use mine to start a slide show on a large monitor as shots are taken. It also will FTP to any computer with internet access, in that case my home network server. The files are not even downloaded from the card. After checking them on the laptop or after arriving home, the files are on the main network server. before I even start packing up the kit. Heck, charge extra for that service for events or wedding receptions.
My colleague just swapped fully from Canon to Sony A9II so i will get to see some of the results and have a long play with it. Having invested in Nikon Glass and loving the ergonomics, the thought of switching to it fills me with dread, i don't need to move my face on the 850 to change shooting settings fast for DX to FX mode, iso, SS, fstop, i get 3 different Focus points 1 lens, 1 back button and one joystick, it just works, i simply hope we get something from nikon thats mirrorless 2 slots very soon. I have go through 1 D850 a year and i would love to not think about Actuations any more and have the lightness and functionally that mirrorless brings to the game. I hope they have something by september at least
I'm finally buying a D750
Just found out the second card won't backup video. This was the main feature why I would consider buying the D780. I really don't see the point now. I've all but given up on Nikon. If the A74 has the A7R4's ergonomics I'm going with that and moving from Nikon. I've been waiting a couple of years now for them to produce a camera that would help with my workflow.

I currently have a D800, 24 -120 f/4 and 70-200F2.8 first generation. If I want to upgrade my body, would you suggest a new D780 or a used D850? My main shooting is travel, landscape/hiking and family photos. I’m happy with the D800 but it is getting old and I’m willing to spend some money for new technology.
If you want the resolution and sharpness ur used to with ur d800 then a d850 make sense
I really hope the planned 200-600 (wildlife) and 70-200 2.8 will be as awesome as the other new Z lenses, then it'll be my time to go to the new Z system, atm still happy to use my D7500 as a hobby photographer. Although a D500 in the Z world would be the next step then!

My DSLR collection rests in silence in back of my equipment closet. My Z7 awaits the 70-200 f/2.8 which we have been promised but is a bit late to arrive.
Hopefully Worth the wait tho with VR + ibis, SR glass and no focus breathing
@@RicciTalks But in my case I got tried of waiting for the 70-200 to be released and I bought the Tamron version about a month ago.Now once the lens is released and made available I have to decide if I want to loose all that money by selling the tamron and the added expence of buying the nikon version.

I just spent (checks notes) $13,800 on a new NIKKOR Z 58mm f0.95 S NOCT to shoot landscapes in the rain on a tripod using my (checks notes again) $5,300 Nikon Z7 II and I just realised I can make 99% the same basic images using a $70 NIKKOR 50mm f1.8D lens with zero distortion hand held on a $1,200 D750… what should I do? P.S. my clients can’t tell the difference.

I'm curious about the WB comparisons. D780 nails wb in appropriate settings while shooting in mixed lighting w tungsten and led. Even without flash it looks precise, w skin tones and whites as irl, perceived. I wonder if z6 is the same way.
Tony and Chelsea Northrop said the auto WB was all over the place on.the Z cameras. They were surprised because they said Nikon were excellent at WB in their DSLRS.
@@markshirley01 Thanks. I rented Z7 for a week recently just to see what's up and it's definitely different from what I get on Nikon DSLRs. It seems that I can't push colors quite as far in terms of saturation, but the overall impression is that the colors are pleasant. Easy to get pure white to look natural. I'm still on the fence though... I think I'll keep my Panasonic for now.. in addition to Nikon d810/DF
might not be the best camera in any one area ----- but its the best all round camera out there .
I am still looking for an upgrade for my D810 (after D800) as a documentary and events photographer.. D780 is already getting me confused over the Z6.. Anyone to help me make that choice?.. I need a workhorse like the D810, I need something that performs better under low light, file sizes smaller and not an additional weight.

D810 would not initially be my choice for that kind of work, but given the options now. I'd have to say Z6. So much going for it with regards to reportage work, for me the lack of lenses is an issue, but I'm sure my, lack of faith is more disturbing. I'm told they are now on way. Some fella in the video just told me ;)

i really like my mirrorless, but i find that my hands aren't steady enough for sensor swab cleaning. so maybe i should accept that it isn't for me. even if the potential results are amazing
Alexander Birch I have had mirrorless for a year and a half now and air can blow works for me with no sensor cleaning. I have had both Sony a7iii and z7 and find Nikon much less prone to dust issues.

Be good if Nikon / 3rd party could build an EVF for D6 / D780 / D900 powered by separate battery EN-EL15b ? with feed fed from HDMI (with pass through) be built and could be very useful with the new D's and Live view mode.

That all depends on the lens used not the body. Af-S lenses make a noise

i am thinking to change from Z6 to D780, in my work think Z6 is so slow to wake up and it's focus speed.
The trick is to set 1 minute display timers on everything, turn energy saving on, leave it on, and half-press when you pickup the camera. By the time it is up to your eye it is ready to go. The D780 still doesn't match a D500/D850's focusing abilities.
I am a long time Nikon user in the USA. I just bought a D850 rather tan move to the Z system. IMO, the Z system as it is now is too much a transitional system and Nikon was far too late to the game in mirrorless. I don't shoot video so don't care about that capability. Still, the Z series needs better features to include longer lasting batteries, a functional grip and 2 card slots.
Seems you are a bit out of touch with latest details e.g. battery life which has never been as bad as initial reports. I can understand about 2-card slot concern, but this has never been an issue for me. The detachable grips I have for my D810 and D850 bodies site quietly in the case and never get used. Too much bulk and added weight for me personally, I do use the vertical grip on my D3, which I use for action photography though. Generally I’m finding the Z bodies so much lighter with smaller form factor, that vertical/portrait shooting is not as much problem as with DSLR. You should try it.
You will be blown away by the Z-mount lenses though.

I am really interested in getting into sports photography and maybe trading in my D7100. I don’t have any fancy lenses so I would have no sense of abandonment if I left behind my kit F-mount and my 35mm lenses for a Z6. It also helps that the Z6 is slightly cheaper than the D780. But then if I were to buy a Z lens 70-200 for sports / general use, it costs sooooo much more money than the F lens counterpart. The mirrorless lens prices are really killer for a Joe Schmoe like me. Wondering which direction I should go. I really wanna take getting into sports photography seriously, and I’ve been thinking about getting off of DX for a long while, but is there any benefit to being on a mirrorless for this line of work or should I save my money and learn on the D780 and ride out the DSLR wave?
EDIT: not to mention that Nikon is offering up to $400 CAD in any trade in towards a D780 on top of the value for the camera. Not sure how much my D7100 is worth but maybe that’s like $900 off. All things that are jumping around in my mind.

I actually did! I ended up getting the Nikon D780. However, I purchased it right before the pandemic (Feb 2020) and so to this day, I haven't really gotten much performance usage out of it (i.e. high speed sports photos). I'm thinking in Dec '22 when my work contract is up, I'll focus on trying to get some sports photos under my belt.
I've brought it on a few camping trips and hikes. Low light performance is fantastic. Honestly, I can't image ever going back to a crop sensor. However, the DSLR is very heavy around your neck during something like a long hike. Z series would probably be A LOT better for most day-to-day stuff cause this thing is heavy. But I love it. I bought a used 50mm and 85mm f-mount lenses for it, got into portraits and I just use it for everything despite the size.
Since the D780 launched 2 years ago, I think they have an improved Zii so that might be worth looking into but I can safely say that the D780 is great for pretty much everything, albeit, pretty heavy. Definitely an amazing pro-sumer level camera.
Dslr with native f mount glass = same weight as Z6 + ftz + f mount lens. So no weight advantage. Z series has more capabilities certainly.
Too late for me. If it came out a year ago I may well have bought it but as my D810 was needing replacing urgently I took a chance on going Mirrorless with theZ Cameras and have not looked back since. As I wait for the next generation Z Cameras I'm investing in Z glass and will definitely be getting the 70-200/2.8S
I am sure many influencers and early adopters will say the D780 AF is much improved over the D750 and better than the Z6. Thats what people will want to hear, but it wont likely be true. The Z lens thus far are incredible, with the exception of maybe the Z 14-30 f4. It looks good, but not incredible. Anyway, the Z lenses are the future, and that is the system you should be looking to get into. I can see the D780 (and to a similar degree the D6) selling some units. There are people out there that will snap 100k plus images a year, and they are not worried about 2, 3, 4, 5 years down the line. There will be another camera in their bag next year and the year after that. Buy it, dog the crap out of it, sell/trade it in, on to the next one. For those that are looking 2, 3, 4, 5 years down the line, it just makes no sense for you to buy a DSLR or any more F mount lenses as of now. Once the right mirrorless camera is available, they will sell their DSLR(s) and F glass and move on. Critical this year that Nikon releases 6-7 Z lenses and 2-3 Z bodies if they want to retain that brand loyalty.
I wish nikon was clearing the shelves of its D780... I wouldn't mind getting one of it was cheap enough
