    You're doing god's work for us girls here. I'm still so lost, intuitive eating seems to equal overating to me. I won't stop at one slice of piece, I always want seconds, I still think about food so often. I'm not restricting ANYTHING, but it can't be normal to want to eat a whole pizza at once ALL THE TIME... and yet if I don't I feel like I'm restricting myself? It's so hard.

    Hi friend! This isn't related to this specific video but I just wanted to thank you. Several months ago I transitioned from eating out 1-3 times a day to exclusively eating at home. It was hard for the first few months but at month 4, I feel I have overcome the addiction and it couldn't have been done without your help changing my mindset of how I approached food.
    From June 1st to today, October 17th, I have only eaten out twice. The journey has been hard. There were countless days all I could think about is fast food. I remember several times specifically that I would literally be cooking steak and thinking how much I would rather be eating a McDonald's double cheeseburger. I remember one day I woke up at 4am CRAVING McDonald's fries. I couldn't sleep, I was hungry and I just could not think of anything else. I ended up shallow frying some French fries (at 4am!) to help push past it.
    Now I feel much more stable in my food intake. I have a better grasp on portions that I don't need a large combo with burger fries and drink, I can eat just a simple sandwich with 2 slices of bread and be nourished for lunch. Eating the fries and a quarter pound burger was just too much and my stomach got accustomed to it. Once I was able to resist long enough, the bacteria in my stomach was able to die off / repopulate for the better food and I just overall feel healthier.
    Anyways a bit of a ramble. Just wanted to thank you for your guidance and to share how you've helped me. Next step is stopping soda. It's going to be difficult but maybe tomorrow? 🤣

    I think this might be the missing piece I needed! I went through exactly what you mentioned today, I overate and found myself feeling guilty and hopeless. I now know to have a "let's learn something from this" approach and I'm thinking about journaling these kind of situations.
    In my case I found I overate twice today due to:
    1. Procrastinating work
    2. Dining out with friends and feeling pressured to order a lot of food even though I wasn't hungry. I struggle saying no to food in social situations because I feel like I'd be missing out on some of the fun and feel a bit left out, plus I would annoy others by asking for less food. I also struggle with not forcing myself to finish my plate.
    Thank you for this, you are a gem ❤

    I really felt what you said about using food as an excuse to not do something. Going forward, I am going to allow myself to relax when I want because I think needing an excuse to relax and lie down is what causes me to overeat. I think my overeating has more angles than just this one, but it is at least a start.

    • @saraberkebile1705
      @saraberkebile1705 Před 10 měsíci +2

      I also am starting to understand why making the reason for my overeating about food is unhelpful. The behavior of overeating itself comes from restriction, and it may not only be from food. It may be the restriction of a behavior. It was never about the food, but rather what the food allowed me to do for myself. Maybe if we allow ourselves to behave like we do after we overeat, we wouldn't care about the food because it was just the initiation to a behavior that actually soothed us.

    Hey Rachel, I just found your channel and really love what you have to say. I'm working on improving my relationship with food myself, but in a different way, that I don't hear about often, and I'm hoping maybe you have some thoughts.
    For me, I feel like I don't think about food *enough.* I don't have any food rules, I don't calorie-count, nothing like that. The thing is that I *hate* cooking and eating. I resent the fact that I have to devote so much time, energy, creativity, effort, and money into eating every day. If I could take a magic pill that allowed me to never eat again, I would - not because I want to lose weight, but because I never want to think about food again.
    I've been trying this year to change this mindset. I realize I'm gonna have to eat every day for the rest of my life, so I might as well try to enjoy it, right? And it's been going... Okay. I find my biggest issue, though, is that I need zero-effort food, and generally those foods aren't very balanced. I don't want to just eat chips for every meal, ya know?
    My self-worth and self-esteem is solid, and I want to nourish my body because I love it. I like how healthy food tastes, and I love how it makes me feel. But it's just such a massive pain in the ass to me to cook up something balanced for most meals! I've already figured out certain hacks, like buying canned or frozen food, rotisserie chickens, etc. but I once I get bored with a recipe, I'm back at the drawing board. It's so, so draining. I hate it!!
    Any advice? How can I learn to enjoy cooking enough that it doesn't feel like pulling teeth just to make a salad?

    Wow. Not giving herself permission to relax before chores. So just kept eating. I can totally relate to that. Your other video talking about scarcity mindset. We forget we can just go out later and buy the cake instead of "having" to eat it now, before "it's all gone". My mother restricted our sugar intake so much that whenever I have it around I feel like I "have" to have it "or else..." - b/c as a child you have less control of these issues. Using food as a way to relax, (or an excuse to), for comfort, for strength, or security. So weird all the "meanings" food can have for us

  • @hkaur4487

    This is an important message, that we should not substitute problematic rules-based dietary thinking as we evolve our relationship with food. Also we need to remember that as women, our menstrual cycle and hormonal changes will influence our relationship with food on a daily basis. Thus, intuitive eating involves responding to the hormonal cycles of the body. It is ok to eat more, or certain types of carbohydrate and fat rich food, right before, during and after your period. Your body is restoring nutrients and eating more calories can help you feel less tired due to blood loss.

I’m 66 so I need to have balance but it’s really easy to get restrictive when thinking “healthy” also. Just a little extra sharing if not an example of your day. Obviously my day likely needs a ratcheting up of nutritious food due to age. Than you Kathy

      A question I might ask you with this is what do you get stressed and fearful of happening? See if that helps you to dig a bit deeper and address the root. There are many reasons why someone may become anxious at the idea of stopping eating, all of which make a lot of sense (although it can feel confusing). Including but not limited to scarcity mindset, emotional blocking, guilt, lack of trust in appetite cues, abstinence violation effect, procrastination, food meanings and more. A complex topic, but journalling and asking yourself deeper questions can be so illuminating to bring you that clarity and understanding. This is certainly not something that has to continue forever for you. Yes, somewhat. But somewhat may not lose weight of course. And if it's being used for the purpose of weight loss I doubt someone would be able to get a healthy relationship with food. It is slightly more complex than that. Because there's also emotional uses of food, body image, your physiology and how you think about food to account for. Sometimes it can be as simple as eat what you want when you want, but not amongst those I have worked with. It just seems like - how do I know this is not just another phase where you fool yourself and us ?

    • @RachaelWrigley
      @RachaelWrigley  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I hear you. And what a great and important question. And I hear the question coming from a place of genuinely wanting to get a good relationship with food and wanting to separate the fact from the fiction and not waste your precious time further listening to people who haven't got real experience on this topic. I'll speak personally on this as it seems you're asking about my relationship with food personally. The reason I know I have a healthy relationship with food now is because I had eating disorders for 10 years. I know what it feels like to struggle with and obsess over food, be on diets, be restrictive and then feel so out of control it would terrify me. I now have peace with food, self maintained and have for years now. I also have helped 100s of other women do the same with the same process and studied for 5+ years on this topic to know it in and out and all the warning signs and signs of 'recovery'. I also haven't been successfully following a plan for years, I worked for 4 years to heal my relationship with food, doing things that really scared me in the aim of getting my life back and eating freely without concern. I can say with 100% certainty that my relationship with food is healthy now and I worked very hard to get here and wanted it more than anything. Having a really healthy relationship with food doesn't take willpower to maintain, it just is. Like breathing. That doesn't mean that my eating patterns or weight won't change over time. I expect they will based on different periods of ageing and life. And that's part of the point. A healthy relationship with food is not a particular weight or a specific eating structure. I remember when this 'food freedom' seemed very mystical and abstract and I would have been sceptical too, but obviously people do heal and the fact I lost weight as a by product of not restrict/binge eating any more does not make my recovery any less real than someone else's (though I understand why you ask and I think it's an important question to ask!). For instance, I still had to work exceptionally hard to improve my bad body image which was present wether I was in a smaller or larger body than I am in today. If I still struggled with my eating disorder I would still be trying to manipulate parts of my body and focusing intensely on it/ weighing daily/ wearing only black etc. As it stands, I have no desire to do this. I can't speak for others, that's about me personally as you raised it. I hope this helps ❤️

    Curious, the criteria to book a breakthrough session is to have a BMI of 18-29? I understand that you have specific range of women who you want to work but why use such an outdated standard of measurement that was never intended to determine a person’s value or health? We are talking about changing our relationship with food and here comes the BMI scale….of course I don’t fall into the criteria 😅 I was really actually surprised when I saw the old BMI scale, a cornerstone of diet culture.

    • @RachaelWrigley
      @RachaelWrigley  Před 11 měsíci

      You're absolutely right that it is outdated in many regards. The reason it's there is not because of who I want to work with but because of scope of practice. I am recieving additional training to make sure I can safely work with this demographic and help as much as possible. The vast majority of work I do with clients is of course relevant regardless of BMI, but throughout my training it was made very clear that there some differences that need to be accounted for and I'm not yet fully confident with those. I'm working hard to remove this limitation because I'm keen to help everyone really effectively. I hope this answers your question ❤️ Also I do work with women outside of the range on a case by case basis if we mutually agree I'm the right person to help once I explain the potential differences and nuances. Then it's up to the individual if they wish to proceed with me or someone else. I have the criteria there to be fully transparent about my area of expertise. It is absolutely not out of prejudice, that couldn't be further from my mission with women, but out of scope of practice. If you wish to have a session with myself and meet the rest of the criteria, it would be a pleasure to take you through all of this and help in any way that I can. I am also going to make sure now that all of this is fully explained on my website. Thank you for bringing it to my attention that this criteria needs further explaining on my website!

    Intuitive eating does not work if you take long term steroids or have type 1 diabetes and I have both.

    Okay, I am changing my mind about the clip. I have listened to more of it. I am sorry, Rachel, I did not give you enough of a chance. I am just so sick of all this vague intuitive eating content.

      Thank you 🤗 Yes, I hear you. I have similar frustrations wich is why I do the work that I do. I like clear tangible actional pointers as well. That being said, do bear in mind that I can imagine most individuals whos job it is to help women become intuitive eaters likely keep a lot of the practical application for those in their paying practice. For instance, 90% of the work I do with clients through a clear process is not on this channel! So that may play in to the tips being 'wishy washy ' (possibly!)

    This is so timely. I’ve just come off a two week “out of control” period due to the excuse of stress and anxiety, then celebration overeating period. 🥹

      I'm glad that it helped. It can be hard to make sense of things so the fact you're able to pick out the underlying drivers is really commendable ❤️ That's the important first step.
