Domestic Violence - The Stigma of Reporting

  • According to Statistics Canada, Manitoba had the highest provincial rates of police-reported family violence and intimate partner violence in 2022. However, rates of reporting are known to be substantially greater than what has been recorded. Sadly, the challenges of reporting for Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit are far greater. The presentation will outline the challenges of reporting and how can you minimize the stigma.
    Speaker biography: Anna Huard, BA, MDP (she/her/ikwe)
    Anna Huard a two-spirit citizen of Couchiching First Nation, Treaty 3, and is born and raised in Winnipeg. After completing her Masters of Indigenous Development at the University of Winnipeg in 2016, Anna knew that working in advocacy and research was her passion. Anna’s expertise include providing culturally appropriate and trauma-informed support to families and Survivors of MMIWG2S+, raising awareness on intersections of justice issues, racism, manufactured poverty, colonialism while advocating for systemic changes to address root causes.
