Storming onto the music scene over 40 years ago, #VanHalen broke new ground in the world of popular music with their signature brand of hard-partying rock 'n' roll. Arguably, the driving force behind it all was the explosive fury coming from the hands of one Edward Van Halen. While the riffs were great, the guitarist's complex and speedy soloing firmly placed the band head and shoulders above the rest of their peers. From the molten licks of "Eruption" to the incendiary lead on "Hot for Teacher," the solos heard on Van Halen's early albums established a new standard in rock.
Join us as we take a closer look at the sound and gear behind Van Halen's five most epic early-era solos in this edition of zZounds' #LegendsOfTone!

Making this video for zZounds earlier this year was a labor of love for me, but now it stands as a wonderful ode to one of my favorite guitarist ever, and one of the reasons I picked up the instrument all those years ago. You will be missed Eddie. RIP
"It's always about the music, never about anything else." - Eddie Van Halen
Fantastic playing
My thoughts exactly...🙏🙏RIP EVH 😭😭🤟🙏🙏
The best Ice Cream Man solo on CZcams. Killer playing all around. Really unbelievable stuff
Brilliant. Just played Fair Warning and 1984 today and this popped up. Love the Panama and Hot For Teacher solos!
1955-2020 RIP Eddie, true guitar legend !
Came to this page for the face melting when I heard the news. Lost a legend
I dont usually get emotional with celebrities passing away -- but, this one is getting to me. So many great memories listening to Van Halen -- RIP
@@JohneRandom me too . We lost a big one today . RIP Ed
2020 was the worst
The only true master of the guitar
It’s just a shame that most people don’t realize he was probably the greatest rhythm guitarist ever, because they only think he was a great solo player!!!!
Many of the worlds guitar greats have said Eddies rhythm playing is beyond comprehension , so ridiculously tight and precise . He has that swing that nobody else has.
Funny thing is, I don’t consider him a great soloist at all. His solos just generally don’t do much, musically. More like random notes with limited true musicality. (With the exception of Eruption and Beat It. Those are all-time masterpieces.)
I definitely consider Eddie a master rhythm guitarist and some of his riff ideas are spectacular.
Baffles me that people think he was a great soloist. Outside of a handful, most of solos just weren’t that impressive.
@@johnhill762 just out of curiosity, what are you basing this on? Are you thinking in terms of harmony? Things he didn’t display rhythmically? Who are you comparing him to?
@@johnhill762 you definitely don’t listen to much Van Halen if you don’t think he was a great solosist 😂
@@coachtim6188
EVH also took classical piano lessons as a kid. If you consider yourself to be a musician on any level, nobody should have to explain anything about VH. You either get it or you don’t. You either like it, or you don’t. 😊
The solo is iconic, but not many people know that it was Steve Lukather that played rhythm guitar on ‘Beat It’ @ 1:47
Michael Jackson asked Eddie to guest appear and play Beat it with him at a show about ten years after they tracked the song. It had been so long that Eddie had to ask Michael’s guitarist to teach him the solo ha !
Eddy created that solo without asking royalty and keep it secret from his bandmate, right?
@@firdauszainudin7118 yeah because at that time when he was in the band they weren’t allowed to do anything outside the band so he told Quincy Jones that there has to be a lot of beer in the studio and to not tell anybody that was the condition and what’s funny went thriller album came out I got number one and Van Halen got number two
Push Comes to Shove. Why does no one know the incredible genius of that solo and the dual rhythm guitars?!
Seriously! So underrated yet at the same time so many of us out there know it’s possibly eddies best solo
That one is amazing bc you can really hear the Allan Holdsworth influence in it!
My favorite song from fair warning 🤘🏻
Thank you !!
Absolutely agree. Fair warning was EVH at his peak in my opinion, not just for lead playing but also rhythm.
Everyone always forgets the best solo.. Spanish Fly.
Arguably one of his most impressive. There's no faking that one.
Michael Jackson = King of Pop
Eddie.Vh = King of Guitare😊
Yngwie ?
@@cww2086 neoclasical god 🤘
That would be Hendrix, king of tapping is more like it
@@ethanmichael7940 No. Hendrix was one of the first and very skilled, but EVH is gamechanging
John Petrucci?
Eddie was the first guitarist I heard that made me want to play and he’s one of my biggest heroes, my EVH Striped Series Frankenstein is definitely one of my favourite guitars that I have
Holly god this guy can rock.... I am so glad and happy that some young people are interested in preserving this awesome music.
Amen! Obviously great Chris’ think alike.😎
Exactly. Not the easiest stuff to emulate!
Awesome job on a video that took some guts to make. Edward is a phenomenon that maybe happens generationally. You rocked the world Ed. R.I.P. my friend. 🙏
The master would be proud my friend!!! what an awesome tribute to the most untouchable guitarist EVH!!!!!! Thank you!
My top 5 van halen solos:
- 5150 (5150)
- Drop Dead Legs (1984)
- Panama (1984)
- Right Now (For unlawful carnal knowledge)
- Jump (1984)
This world is so sad , it all comes to a end at some point. We love you Eddie and all the loved ones we have lost, god bless and enjoy every second of this beautiful life of ours❤️
I love so much this videos. Keep like that!
Absolutely crushed and clean. Great job.
Good job, thanks for sharing!
Dude. You frickin nailed Eruption. Oh my god.
The leads sound AMAZING but I had issues with:
1. cutting away from the direct view of the fretboard to other angles and
2. showing the equipment instead of playing the lead.
Otherwise great video
Showing the equipment was good for beginners amp settings and stuff
100% agree. CZcams is saturated with guitarists who cut camera angles regularly to hide the fact that they cant record a solo in 1 take. However thats the standard these days! Leads and accuracy of the solos were on point!!
@@sonofaspine never even thought of that. My man your right!
@@joshmuz9018 Appreciate it bro. Hopefully I haven't spoiled youtube covers for you now haha
Loved the tone when you put the phaser on!
One of the all time greats. Rest in peace , Eddie. You are a legend !!!
Great list and performances!
Beautiful playing and so articulate, great video 👍
Pensar que este video fue hecho cuando Eddie aun estaba vivo y pudo haberlo visto... es increíble, se le extrañará maestro !! RIP EVH
Black and blue has some amazing solo too :)
you did very well... thanks for the video
Perfectly played, especially Eruption. A great tribute to the King: Eddie Van Halen!
KILLER JOB,THANKS BRO FOR THE POST
R.I.P. KING EDWARD
Bro, you pretty much nailed it.
Happy to hear a young guy playing like this. You are awesome
The #1 for me is Beat it!
For me too. Dope!
me too! i really love it
For me surprisingly it’s Panama, the solo is exquisite but it’s positioning in the song is unprecedented, followed by the greatest breakdown in rock, incredible
I'll be the different opinion but Cathedral is all guitar and by far the most AMAZING thing I've ever seen done on an electric guitar. My all time #1 no other guitar piece in history can touch EDS brilliance in it. Period
NO ERUPTION
One of the best beat it solo covers I've probably ever seen
Rip Ed!! Met the legend back in 79 and became friends on the spot! 😏
Great job!
Nice work, man!
Fantastic playing and sound !
Thanks brother. All of my faves from the man!
Good for you dude🤘🏻that was awesome😬
Great job
Thank you!
One so,o that was excellent, and never gets the love it deserves is from VH 3 actually. A Year To the Day…it drips with feel, live and on the album.
Eddie was the greatest of all time! No doubts for me! ❤❤❤❤ R.I.P Eddie Van Halen!
Gotta say thats the closest I’ve every heard the beat it solo played to the original recording well done man
Check out Orianthi, doing Beat it at a radio show. She was set to tour with MJ before his death.
Lol it’s a bit off, actually. But not bad.
Excellent 👍😊
Amazing. I remember practicing 8 hours a day. I have a master's degree if you could condense what I know. But it is useless out there. I tell my students to learn enough to not put your guitar in the closet once you stop taking lessons. It will be your friend for life. I played your shook me solo 30 times last night. My daughter said why? I said cause I want to get it right.
Oh wow!!!! I subbed soooo awesome🎸🎸🥰🥰
I now wish you selected top 10 ...the top 5 were sweeeeet!
Awesome!!
nice bro!!!
What a great video

The greatest guitar player ever RIP EDDIE 💔
I bought the same evh strip series guitar, few weeks ago.getting in set-up for Shredder Heaven Action! Lol Great playing.
Excellent playing!!
I was about to dislike when I saw you play Eruption's tapping part with the middle finger... Just kidding! Amazing work bro ! I love the little stories on the bottom left.
Amazing!
Eddie’s tone had more high end and sustain. You can’t fake a cranked tube amp
No, it sounds less brighter because his guitar is on Eb
Nor can you fake feel which I think this has none of it. Just routine playing.
@@larsbonnet17 I think it sounds great
It's cranked though masters on ten
@@larsbonnet17 you are certainly an inspiration to us all, Lars. If you want to give someone constructive tips that's one thing but you are just being a prick. The kid played every solo note for note and he doesn't have a 100 Watt Vintage Super Lead Plexi cranked jumped (only about 20k), not to mention EVHs was tricked out with a special speaker combo 2 celestion vintage 30s and 2 JBLs, a fat cap, a variac set for 110 volts, a vintage echo plex tape delay unit (a real one-unbelievably expensive), a studio quality vintage plate reverb unit with hard pan opposite the dry Marahall with the effects run through the front including the echo plex an old MRX phase 90 (the easiest tone to pull off with a reissue). Can you really distinguish the feel that much? Eddie playing in the studio is amazing but he hasn't played at his best live since the early 80s as he was always wasted and tweaked out of his mind. He's easily my favorite rock player but like my other top 5 guys like Hendrix and Page, you can only play so well when you are the most fucked up guy in the venue. Do us a favor and show us how it's done with proper feel!
Amazing tone !!!
Great job!! I'll gladly accept that guitar, thnx😀
Excellent
His riffs are super cool .
got me a guitar like that. Great instrument!
Amazing
Amazing!!!!!!
Great Video and Rip Eddie. I personally think The Dream is Over solo is very underrated. But great list.
it's so good
#4 sounds so so good
Increíble amigo sensacional
It was Eddie that took guitar playing to the next level, after Jimi bought his guitar wizard playing style to the masses.#RIP#
Spectacular
Muito bom!!!! Digo excelente!
Tocou muito bem. Ed.VanHalen é impar e acabou com Ed. a era do guitarman... Nunca mais aparecerá outro igual...
Hermosos solos
Interesting how all those solos were recorded in 1984 or earlier.
Great playing. 👍
very fkn nice dude!
Great Perfomances! Another HERO is BORN!
Pretty good, only thing I'd add is a little reverb and vibrato in some chords, to really get his sound
Eddie is the only guitarist that I think has a case for being the "best ever" over Hendrix.
Lol no
@@johnhill762 alright but that's why it said "I think"
Yea definitely not
@@Vxnpl that's fine. I was just expressing my opinion.
Well it's allways hard to say who's the "best" ever, but most influential? He's way beyond hendrix on that front
I love how you add facts about EVH to your videos. You must know, but anyway for other viewers:
Fun Fact #1 The final ‘Frankenstrat’ was the original white & black guitar painted with additional red paint (along with Eddie’s other mods)
Fun Fact #2 The yellow and black ‘Bumblebee’ guitar was buried with Dimebag Darrell.
Great job man. Now I have to buy the striped series. It’s not going to help but I will anyway, dang it
RIP Eddie !!!!
We all love you eddie your life continues through your kick ass music 🤘🤘🤘
good job Justin
1. Push Comes To Shove
2. Ice Cream Man
3. One Foot Out The Door
4. Dancing in the Streets
5. Secrets
my favorite was always the solo to push comes to shove. RIP Eddie...the legend. 🎸
❤️ to Eddie.
Rip🎉
O maior de todos, EVH.
*”Eddie’s Top 5 solo’s (that i can play)” ***
Almost can play
Runnin with the devil ain't talkin bout love
Black and Blue and Poundcake are off the charts
Good
Justin that was absolutely killer. How many effects are you running? Is that with the head you show. I am going to buy a new amp soon and that rig you have sounds killer. Could you give me a few tips of amps, effects etc.
Dont Tell Me What Love Can Do has a killer solo. I think Eddies tone and guitar playing was so much better during the Sammy years.
Agreed!!!
He’s a legend
RIP to the Legend - Eddie Van Halen! 🕺
Classic instrument art back then. Good clarity. Record this for Taylor please.
🙏 Legend.
Ok great playing for sure but Top 5 you have to be a youngster!!! Just gonna throw these out there....Outta Love Again, Romeo’s Delight, Light Up The Sky, Push Comes To Shove, One Foot Out The Door..,Hang em High, list goes on!
RIP Eddie Van Halen. 1955-2020.
Hero’s are remembered but legends never die
Push comes to shove is one of his best imo
Girl Gone Bad is one of my fave solos.
Eddi met toute les boutons à fond
That was awesome sounded solid to me...now where is that credit card
Jeezuz! And how old are you?
This was exceptional!
Sure, heaps of minor mistakes, but that takes nothing away from your amazing abilities!
