- Life is Strange is great and messy and great. Its motto is "you're not allowed to be happy," and it doesn't know how teenagers actually speak. It's also a kind of beautiful experience.

You genuinely brought me to tears. I agree, the beauty of the game is its representation of reality. The mess that it is, is what MAKES it beautiful. Thank you
Heh, I love that your profile picture is the album cover of a song featured in the game. How do I know that? Because I’m a huge nerd who has spent way too much time listening to the soundtrack of this game lmao
Oh, and I totally love and agree with your comment.(:
This is very good! Life is Strange is probably my favorite game, warts and all. It’s such a compelling piece of entertainment that carries a surprising amount of emotional weight. Great work!
It's a spectacular experience. I'm not sure any other game will ever be able to make me feel quite the same way this one did. Thanks for watching!
There is no way this video is this high quality and you've only got 174 subs.
Thank you! It's super encouraging to see comments like this!
@@StoryStreet keep on making more content! I look forward to seeing more from you. :)
wow years later look at how many subs :0
Thank you for changing my mind about the ending, because I was one of those who were annoyed that you can only choose between two endings no matter what. I can see the beauty now.
Your essay on Community brought me here, as I am a huge fan of the show. Great work on both! Also, your rumble about getting to 100 followers was really cute. Glad to see I got here pretty late to be part of the first 1000 :)))
130 000 now imagine
I'm pissed that I never found this video sooner but seriously I CAN'T describe how much I love this video and you for making it. every single time a hear people talk about this incredible game despite its flaws I get a feeling of acknowledgement that I'm not the only person that went through the feelings that this game brought to me.
I'm happy to be of service
The ending DESTROYED me. I couldn't be objective because Max and Chloe's history together-particularly the segment Max walks around the price household remembering their childhood together-was so achingly like mine and my "partner in time". I couldn't help but be emotionally invested and losing Chloe was like losing that person, my biggest fear. I cried actual tears. So I am torn but ultimately grateful for experiencing this story. On the one hand I feel like an ending where Max fought to keep the connection she rebuilt and to give Chloe a chance at life and growth would have been meaningful. But at the same time it wasn't meaningless, her time with chloe still mattered. Her childhood with her still mattered. Her week still mattered. And the realization that it still mattered made me a little less afraid.
Despite how it ends or what it teaches you, this game grabs onto your mind for days or even weeks , makes you wanna reconsider your own real life choices and behaviour.
This game left me broken......but that's okay
grabbed for 9 years now..
I cried, I actually cried at this video. It’s very refreshing to see smth both praising yet criticizing life is strange compared to the lot of videos popping up mostly criticizing it (which dw I think is well done either way). You perfectly explained and captured why I felt so connected to this game despite its shortcomings when I couldn’t even begin to fathom why. Thank u for this amazing video
Finally someone that relates to Max and Chloe the same way i do.
Max is adorable. She's shy, dorky, geeky, gentle and protective. Chloe is problematic, but i learned to like her because Max does it.
How the Hack do you manage to have such few views with such good videos? I love this video.
Thank you so much! I'm still trying to grow the channel, and I hope that I can make even better videos in the future!
@@StoryStreet I just watched every video on this channel xD it's not much till now, but of an astounding and outstanding quality. Not just for a channel in this size, but on CZcams in general. I hope to see some new content soon.
Don't worry the power of algorithms actually comes in clutch
I'm glad this opinion is out there. I just finished the game and I thought the ending was brilliant.
I like to revisit this game at least once a year around fall, and I’m wrecked emotionally just about every time. You put that into words perfectly
Also, the music used in this game is so amazing and I still listen to the bands today. So great
I couldn't put into words why this game is so beautiful to me but you did it so well. I love your work!
This was really incredible. Hoping more recognition comes to your channel this year
This was such a great essay over life is strange can truly see the passion and work put into this video you should do one on before the storm! Or maybe the mess of life is strange 2 that just go finished
Simply amazing, keep going man!
Excellent and beautiful essay, thanks for taking the time to make it!
Thank you for taking the time to watch it!
Great video! This is and will always be one of my favourite games of all time. And this pretty much sums up why it is.
GG 🙌🏿 👏🏿
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching!
man why this video only have this much views u deserve better
u explained the ending so nicely
This video is so amazing and I'm so glad I found this channel
I disagree with your point about the ending of Life is Strange. But regardless, you earned a sub! I will definitely be checking out your videos on the Rocksteady Arkham Trilogy. I can't wait to see what you have to say.
Keep it up. I know as well as anyone that CZcams is a grind, and if this video is anything to go off of, you have tons of potential for success on this platform.
Thanks for the sub and I hope you enjoy the other videos!
Found your channel from your amazing Avatar TLA video and I do not have any regrets! Love your analysis and the variety of shows
From the bottom of my heart, I hope your channel succeeds because you make amazing content
Great video! thank you for making it
The whole video is one of the best videos I've saw on this platform. For how strongly I feel about this game, you described it so perfectly to a pinch. ❤
Great... Now I have to watch all of your video essays.
This video is so good!! Especially the ending. Why doesn’t this have wayyy more views?!
The thing i love about LIS is that at the time of release everyone was trying to make boring shooters and release for the 50th time another cheap fortnite/COD copy paste and any game that was money grabbing.
This studio was like: you know What , lets make something truly outside the box, something that would make grown Ass people cry.
Forever i Will follow this studio for this bravery o a World that goes around by money.
Chloe might be flawed but she is aware of her flaws. She does act quite selfish for a lot of the game but then again, in her mind she has been abandoned by everyone she cared for, be it her dad, her best friend or her other best friend, by some extent she probably even feels that way about her mom for marrying David. And even if this looks different from the outside, I can see why she thinks that way. Sometimes you just feel everything goes to hell and the world itself takes pleasure in torturing you. So it seems only natural to me that she turns into a loner and becomes rather selfish. Then again, when everything is at stake you realize that deep down she still does care. I can see why people dislike her but with me, she resonated a lot, so much in fact, that I got her tattoo.
I'm glad you like Chloe so much! I totally understand why Chloe is the way she is, even if the way she is can be insufferable to me at times. She's still a good, well developed character, certainly, just not the most likable to me.
@@StoryStreet I just wanted to present a reason why someone might like her, even though other people do find her insufferable. And I do understand why they do. I just don't feel the same way. But then again, it seems 47% of people don't either. I don't think Max is bland though, I like her too, I just like Chloe a tad more. In fact, the most emotional moment in Before the Storm was the bonus episode where Max was a part of and I feel she's a big reason as to why. Both of these characters are much more compelling when they play off one another. Having someone I care equally as much for as they do for another, I think it's amazing as to how believable their friendship is.
Also, this is Max's story because we got Chloe's story in the next game. That one... that one wrecked me knowing what would happen
I do not understand how such great content has so few views, I’ve watched most of your videos and i imagined you had over 100k subscribers
Oh look, I found an amazing channel by chance...
This video was great, you earned my sub.
Good video loved how u explained it
That's a great video, you just gained a sub :)
i always knew there was a deeper reason why i loved these games so much - i am in tears this is such a beautiful explanation of the game.
This video really made me tear up, this is a fucking stellar video. Thank you for making this.
I actually love the stealth part. It was a nice change of pace in the game and the whole nightmare sequence was very nostalgic and emotional which is great for an ending.
This such a good video!
Okay I love this Video so much aHh
This also kinda reminded me of how much I actually enjoyed Max's character
Honestly I would love to see you talk about Life is strange 2 too. It's so overhated and sadly super underrated
2:18 I don’t think saving Max counts as David redeeming himself cause doing one good deed doesn’t make up for the fact that he physically, emotionally and verbally abused Chloe and stalked and harassed high school girls.
Just found your channel from your plant of the apes video and you have my favorite game too!!
This is such good video!!!!!!
Very nice essay
life certainly is strange, thank you for this video
Aaaaaaaaand Subscribed! 👍🏻
This was great
I've been looking for videos/stuffs about LiS that weren't just nitpicking about the game's "technical" flaws. Because considering how successful and impactful it was to so many people (and to me), there was obviously more to say about it than pointing historical inaccuracy of the memes mentioned. I was kinda lost on what to try to watch, but turns out the less-than-10,000-views video was the one I was looking for to make sense of the game that had me cry for an entire day last week. Thank you
Short, but true.
Underrated AF
Played this with my boyfriend a year or two ago and we LOVE chloe, faults and all we fell for her depressed sort of recklessness instantly and remained super attached to her throughout. We loved max as well but something about chloe's energy is appealing to me, and her shortcomings are,, hella endearing even when she's frustrating. It shocked me finding out that so many people disliked her, but in retrospect it's not that surprising- she's just the complicated asinine type of character I tend to love. And of course we saved chloe (sorry arcadia bay but this is my emotional support complex side character) and were also shocked to see we were the (albeit slight) minority, it was pretty cut and dry for us. It's really wild how subjective gaming experiences are.
@Alexander Leblanc
"Angry b*tch 24/7" ain't that complicated a personality to understand. But I'm black, and women like Chloe are a dime-a-dozen for me.
And for a while I kinda thought it was a race thing, but really it's a matter of experience and patience. I don't suffer fools who are incapable of progress, and that's due to my faith in humanity being ravaged at an early age. But for those like you who carry for empathy for humanity than I do, you're more empathetic of someone like Chloe.
Even with how much I say Life is strange after playing this, it still hit different after watching
Beautiful Sadness
I'm actually shocked of how many views this video got compared to its quality !!! Got my sub !! Going to watch your last of us video later too.
This video essay is amazing! I loved it. You perfectly captured what makes me love this game and also gave me a new perspective about the ending.
Have you played Life is Strange 2? I love this game as much as the first one and I would love to hear your thoughts about it (Even another essay if you feel like it).
First off: thank you so much.
Second: I've really enjoyed Life is Strange 2! I would like to go ahead and make another video about it, but frankly, I don't know when that would be. I try to schedule ahead and right now, a Life is Strange 2 video wouldn't come out until June at the earliest. But I'll do it, I promise. I have things to say about it, trust me.
@@StoryStreet Thank you so much for your answer!
I'll be waiting for the LiS 2 video :) until then, you've earned my subscription and I will be following your next videos
Bae over bay. She’s just a complicated teenager. I can empathize with her. But yeah like her or not, it’s important to acknowledge she’s a good character.
Way to go dude. My friends told me I would like this game but hate the ending. When I played through it I told him I loved the ending because of the theme of failure and destiny. When he said it didn’t fit in w the narrative I told him action and reaction. When max saved chloe it created the storm due to fate and destiny. He still thinks the ending sucks and refuses to listen to me. Hopefully you can get through to him better than I could.
this video isn't about the game and i feel you bro
I don't know if you'll reply, but you really put how I felt into words and a video. I've wanted to do CZcams but don't have the experience or income for it right now. I will say that your video inspires me to make my own Life is Strange video and give my thoughts. If I ever make it there you'll be a credit to the inspiration.
Thank you so much! I hope you get to make that video one day! I'd love to see it!
aka 'The Fault in our Grandfather Paradox'
This made me tear up. Chloe died on a dirty bathroom floor... In pain. Believing she was unloved, unwanted, and forgotten. I chose to sacrifice Chloe and it haunts me to this day.
God this was a good video ❤️
Is... is it just me, or was the growing bloodstain in THAT scene shaped like a butterfly?
You've created something genuinly heartwarming with this video, im not even that big of a fan of life is strange but this video feels personal like a friend giving life advice
7:48- 8:17
The great thing about art is it's left up to interpretation. However this assessment is punctured by the fact that the dev team at DontNod wanted to implement more outcomes that would show that your choices would in fact matter, but due to time and budget constraints they weren't allowed to do so.
It's a nice defense though going by what is as opposed to what could have been.
Would love if you'd make a video about Life is Strange 2! Keep up the excellent work. :)
In the words of Mel Brooks, "Life Stinks!" That movie was the best.
WHY THE HELL IS THERE ONLY 10000 VIEWS
I don't who you are; But, I jst Love man , u taught abt me and humanity more thn any other. PLEASE WRITE A BOOK, IT WOULD BE HONOR TO BUY THE SAME !!!!
I remember during the scene where you get the option to either let Nathan get the living daylights beat out of him or to step in and stop the fight, I sadistically enjoyed watching him get destroyed, to the point where l was upset that the scene “ended too quickly”. Obviously in hindsight, this reaction stems from my past, my inability to stand up for myself against the bullies that would beat me up when I was in grade school. I enjoyed watching a bully get nearly killed, because it satisfied some deep, dark egotistical desire I didn’t know I had. But then when the end of the game rolled around and it was revealed that Nathan wasn’t a bad kid, that he was just a victim of circumstances, being abused by those idols he thought he could trust… It hit me hard. It was at that moment that I realized how messed up I was in the head, to take pleasure at watching others suffer, even if it was just a video game character. I never really thought of my childhood bullies as being real people who did what they did because of what others had done to them. That even the bullies have bullies. Ever since then, I’ve wondered about who my bullies REALLY were, and why they were who they were. Maybe I was their bully the entire time, and I didn’t realize it. My personal image of them was clearly biased and one-sided. This game certainly had a massive, unexpected impact on who I am now, and I’m glad it exists, cheesy dialog and all.
First community, then LIS, we have a similar taste
Despite the poor animation, the cringy dialogue that is clearly written my middle age French guys who have never spoken to an american Teenager before, the poor pacing, the ultimate unimportance of you choices, ect. I still find life is strange to be charming. It has a lovely atmosphere, chatacters that are (against the odds) likeable, I actually like the Art style as long as no one is speaking. Despite its very large flaws, life is strange is a game that holds a special place to me.
I love Life is strange but god damn the plot holes are killing me. Dontnod NEEDS to get their plot right.
Thelonious Monster?
I am sure you get these comments all the time but: You should do a Bioshock video. lol
I didnt feel feel bad for nathan especially in his final message
sacrificed arcadia bay gang show your hands!👐👐
👍👍
the most impactful moment of this game for me was when chloe told max to go back and let her die to save arcadia bay. chloe realized she had been looking at life rather selfishly and broke down, telling max that she didnt even deserve to live if it meant all the people in their town had to die in turn. chloe basically accepted her fate that she needed to die. and i kind of think she was right, she mentioned how in every "timeline" max was in chloe either died or came close to dying, it was clear the universe just.. needed chloe to die no matter what. and thats horrible but chloe accepted it, which is even more heartbreaking. but my favorite part is when she tells max that even if max goes back and lets chloe die, the time they spent together that week still had impact and still meant something. max would still be a changed person and that was the most important thing. i think its very memorable how if you sacrificed chloe, her sacrifice was an act of selflessness from her after she was selfish for the entire game.
@Izzy Coppolino
You're more forgiving than I am, if that one act was enough to redeem her in your eyes.
For me her having that realization wasn't enough to wipe away all the crap she puts Max through just because she's had an oh-so-hard life. Especially since there's no build up to that realization, it just comes out of nowhere, as you're expected to care because Max cares. And as I've been implying, not everyone's that infinitely empathetic.
LIS without Chloe isn't LIS to me.
Ik that's insanely biased but idc.
“Life hurts and it sucks but you have to keep going because what else are you going to do?”
Well....die. And some people will take that when they decide that all this pain isn’t worth it anymore. And to be honest, it probably isn’t worth it in the first place.
Looking back on this video, I wish I had rewritten that entire conclusion or at the very least added on to it.
I think that it's less about just moving forward for the sake of it but rather understanding that there is something to move forward to. There are friends and family that care about you, a world waiting to appreciate a piece of art you've created, a life still as of yet unlived. Life can be difficult and messy and hard, yes, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel if you're just willing to push through to get to it. Even if you can't see it, you have to trust that it's there. And when you get to that light, life may just throw you straight into another tunnel. But maybe life is worth it just for those little moments of light. I personally have always tried to live with the philosophy that one good moment can balance out a hundred bad days. And trust me, that's a hard philosophy to maintain or believe in. But it's those little moments of light, those little smirks at shitty jokes, those tiny minutes where you realize someone cares about you, those seemingly insignificant times where things felt okay for just a second. It's those moments, if we allow them to, that make all those awful struggles worth it.
Maybe I'm spewing bullshit, but it's those ideas that have managed to keep me sane all these years.
Thank you for watching, and I wish you luck in whatever tunnels life throws you into in the future.
StoryStreet I sadly, don’t agree. You keep moving forward and there’s only one thing to look forward to, more pain. That’s all life is: pain and punishment. That little light isn’t worth it to me. And the worst part about all of this is we didn’t ask to be here. I didn’t want life. It can go bother someone else. Behind those shitty jokes and tiny minutes are years of pain and punishment. That to me, will never be worth it.
Still appreciate the video though, and I really appreciate the reply.
@@moonmoon2479 The interesting part...is that you're both right. From a certain perspective. It's the classic "Is the glass half empty or half full?" question. The answer changes depending on who you ask.

I vastly prefer the save Chloe ending. While the other is a real tear jerker, I think the other not only leaves it open for the comic series (which I do enjoy), but I think it helps show Max and Chloe’s growth more than the other one, as well as seeming to make more sense.
Regarding the latter point, it feels like the game has been priming you all this time to believe that going back in time to make huge changes won’t fix anything. It seems to fail at every other point, but then this time it’s different just... because. I’m not convinced Max has sufficient reason to believe it would work and it’s even suggested (quite reasonably) by Chloe in the comics that it’s borderline narcissistic for Max to believe all the destruction was linked to that one thing she did. But the real point is that the final cutscene following that last decision is able to convey a tremendous amount of character and growth with little to no dialogue (which kinda uncharacteristic of the game in general tbh), showing how they’re both able to overcome their core flaws owing to their complementary relationship, while demonstrating a very compelling narrative reversal in which the roles of a supportive partner to an emotionally vulnerable one are flipped between the two. I like the storytelling of that last stretch more than the other, something’s really happening rather than the devs rubbing onions in your eyes ordering you to sob for bae.
Huh. At least someone who doesnt hide behind "quantity matters" and actually use his brain. Its curious you know. There is so many people vocal about sacrifice Chloe being only right choice, yet good half of players took other option and are nowhere to be seen or so vocal.
There is multiple reasons to pick sacrifice bay, fucked up as it is. Im not taking that choice away from anyone, your game, your choice. But at least, make that choice for good reason. Saving Bay is 'easy' option, that doesnt demand too much thinking. "One or thousand, ofc i have to sacrifice her". I find that lack of empathy alarming. But its always easier to sacrifice someone else than yourself, so i guess its natural. Better you than me, no hard feelings.
Some doesnt even like Chloe, call her drug abusing trash, therefore worthless. Thats...not something that belongs into 21st century. That, is actually pretty sad there are still people thinking that way.
When Chloe herself says she is not worth as anyone else in the town, it should be alarm bell to not take that choice lightly. Everyone's life is worth and Chloe's life is worth as anyone else. Nobody has right to judge your worth(okay Christians believe God has, but he has powers of his own), so nobody has right to ask her to die.
My ultimate answer was, Chloe is worth. Thats why i couldnt sacrifice her. Am I happy with people in town dying? No. But i must live with it, same as they do.
PS: And yes, i have red comics.
@@cyphi474 yeah I mean my point isn’t that utilitarianism isn’t correct. A choice between 1 person or thousands is unambiguous to me, but the actual choice presented in the game (and this is my point) ought be ambiguous for the characters. I actually thought about it a lot and ironically the one thing in the game’s time travel plot mechanics that doesn’t make sense is the Chloe hurricane thing, the game just decided that the very exact way Chloe dies in that moment causes the tornado to not appear. There’s no like logic to it, you can’t go fact 1 + fact 2 = conclusion with it, it’s a non-sequitur. Going back to let her die doesn’t even actually erase all the time travel and any vague notions of destiny are off simply because it can be subverted, in fact Max is perfectly capable of preventing Chloe from dying, it’s just a random series of events that unless adhered to will cause a hurricane to wipe out a small town. Based on available information it’s irresponsible to continue meddling with those powers because the available body of information should tell you that meddling with time is causing the tornado and the answer is not “keep doing it” if anything at all because it’s mental enough as it is that she should draw any conclusions from this insanity. Even on the off chance from their perspective at the time that Chloe’s death could stop the hurricane, it’s a crazy risk because if it doesn’t then Max gets transported forward to a time period where Chloe isn’t alive to help her through the tornado to safety and the tornado is ripping the town to pieces with her in it, so taking random stabs in the dark carries the risk of getting herself killed. Utilitarianism isn’t about the outcome itself being moral, it’s still the choice itself. My point is that “Sacrifice Chloe or Arcadia Bay” has only one correct answer, but because the available information is so bad, Max isn’t morally correct in making it, she’s morally lucky.
@@The_Story_Of_Us As i said, multiple reasons. But real point is, Max couldnt make other choice.
If she choose to sacrifice Bay, she torns the photo and say, "Not anymore". No more changes, no more fixing things only to make it worse. Max accepts consequences of her actions.
If she choose to sacrifice Chloe, she drops photo, but not tear it. That raise question, does she really accept consequences of her actions? As far as she have it, there will be always temptation to "fix things", get better outcome, get Chloe back. Soon or later, she will return and save Chloe again, even if she knows the cost. Ultimately, it leads back to sacrifice bay ending. There is no other option since she has no photo to revert it back to sacrifice Chloe anymore..
Personaly i think thats oversight by the Dev team, to get that emotional shot of butterfly for cutscene. She should tear it as proof she accepts Chloe's death as her final decision.
But it is what it is. It makes that choice just illusion.
As you said, Max doesnt have advantage of hindsight. She has to decide right there and its very risky, because she could sacrifice Chloe for nothing and not being able to revert it back. She still took butterfly photo, but she cant be sure, she will still have it. From her perspective(seen trough cold logic), safer choice is stick to what she have than risk everything for slim chance it will work.
To accept consequence.
@@cyphi474 yeah that’s what I was thinking too, I like the idea of her arc culminating in an action, wherein she confidently rips the picture apart to show that she’s finally okay with a decision she made not turning out the way she wanted and relying on Chloe to get past the pain that comes with, and for Chloe of course that allowing their dynamic to reverse and for her to step up and be the emotionally supportive one, providing a satisfying resolution to their character arcs.
man the video was Amazing , but why did u kill chloe man
Gadayum
personally I don't like Chloe at all because the game does not really acknowledge her behavior like Max not really talking back at her in a heavy argument way, you can try, but the game again doesn't really give the player a chose to do so.
If rocket racoon was in the game, he be like.
Rocket "OH BOO HOO MY FRIEND MAX LEFT ME AS A KID AND MY DADDY DIED IN A CAR ACCIDENT"
Max "GASP"
Rocket "Well I don't care if it's mean. EVERY girl has had dead dads, that's still no excuse for you to be a complete petty, reckless, selfish A - hole to everyone!"
Your opinion on Chloe is bad and you should feel bad. With that said, I think the game resonated most strongly with two main groups: people who saw themselves in Max, and people who saw themselves in Chloe. I see myself in Chloe and Max both, and love and cherish the both of them.
Also fuck that town
The reason it's so messy by the end is because they decided to redo the whole end of the story around episode 4, as evidenced by the trailer for ep 4 and cut content where nathan talks about being able to see the tornado.
For those who like Life is Strange I truly recommend you this video essay:) czcams.com/video/kKGNIWbQV5Y/video.html
My biggest issue with the end of this game isn't that it's a binary choice. It's a little dumb, because to me theres only one choice. You can't let a whole town die to save one person. But they needed to give you the choice because it's a choice based game. Because of this, they put a lot more effort into the 'Sacrifice Chloe' ending. If you sacrifice the town you just kind of drive through and off into the sunset. Chloe's funeral scene is heartbreaking though. You can tell how much care went into it. It's like they didn't actually think anyone would choose to save her over the town so that ending was rushed and poorly done.
StoryStreet:"Chloe's as likable or unlikable as you perceive her to be..."
Me:"That's probably the most understandable assessment I'll hear from LiS fans. Because I'mma be frank, I don't like her. She does nothing to warrant empathy. But since there are so many who like her, implies that her obnoxious attitude, manipulation of Max, and unrepentant destructive nature is meant to be endearing because her circumstances are oh-so-tragic... And as you are obviously aware that doesn't work for everyone."
its decent not great
