    Very interesting man. So sad that he wrote so much and obviously brought joy to people through his work and died with so little to his name.

    Thank you, Claire, for bringing this poet, musician and writer to our attention. Also, Thank you for the links to the performances of his music. Your work is much appreciated. Mr. Campion's genius was not recognized for a time after his death, but fortunately his work was re-found in the late 1800's. The lute playing and beautiful singing in the links you provide are lovely. I read somewhere he may have died of plague?

    It was quite pleasant to learn about a man who had a life full of varied interests and managed to escape being imprisoned, beheaded, burned at the stake and so forth. 23 pounds may not have been much even then, but you can't take it with you!

    Lovely music! I wondered about that triangular instrument the musician was playing in "Amaryllis" and wondered what that might be and when it went out of frequent use? And as for Campion leaving only 23 pounds...that might not be so bad after all if he enjoyed his life and spend all his money before he died traveling, eating good food and buying what he liked. No kids apparently to support. Why not?

    I have always wondered how history would have changed if Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart had met. No advisors or courtiers, just the two of them. Oh to be a fly on the wall. I love your videos! I love "talking Tudor" 😄

    I had a thought. As I look at the things that were important to him I think he was the kind of person who had a O.P.B. book. This translates to Other Peoples Business. He helped people by bringing them music and poetry and by becoming a doctor. I believe that he most likely helped also by giving financially. It's very possible that he considered people more important than money. It is also likely that he gave anonymously . I like that thought.

    Sorry to point this out but I think you said 1520 instead of 1620 at the start of the video. I was a bit confused at first so I replayed it, and you did accidentally say 1520. No judgement, I often do that myself, just letting you know. 😊
    Love these videos. ❤️

    I don't feel he had a disappointing ending. He built a wealth of knowledge, music, poetry, and a name for himself, so much so that he's still remembered and admired centuries after his death. How many of us will leave money in the bank, assets to be split by those who inherit them, yet no memory of lifting the soul of our fellow humans, no lovely works to be remembered by?

    Do I understand correctly about marriage, if you had ties to court you had to get permission to marry. What if you lived on Baird or Lords, Dukes land and worked the land or providing service, farming, cooking. Could you get married or were you to leave?

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  Před 5 lety +2

      If you served the monarch closely, like a maid of honour for Queen Elizabeth, then you were expected to get the queen's permission to marry, yes. I'm not sure about those in service to nobles. I expect that they did have to get their employer's blessing.

    Prince Henry? Do you mean the elder brother of Charles I? Who might have been Henry IX, had he kept his Christian name as his throne name? 🤔
