The reputation of Sir William Wallace looms large in Scotland, and after the 1995 film “Braveheart” his legacy became known around the globe. But, there is a lot to separate in terms of fact from fiction.
What we really know about William Wallace comes from only a few sources, most notably the 15th century writings of a poet called Blind Harry. Unfortunately, there are many periods of Wallace’s life for which no information exists.
Sometime around A.D. 1270, William Wallace was born. The country during the time of his birth was peaceful, thriving under the rule of King Alexander III. But by 1275, Alexander and all of his heirs had died. This left a terrible power vacuum in the Kingdom.
No less than 13 noblemen stepped forward to claim the crown, including the two biggest players, Robert the Bruce, and John Balloil. This period is now known as the “Great Cause.” and in an effort to avoid a civil war between them, the Scottish nobles invited the English King, Edward I, also known as Edward Longshanks, to help arbitrate the succession. But King Edward used his influence to mold Balliol into a puppet for English interests.
Small acts of resistance and violence broke out here and there across Scotland. There were pockets of rebellion, but no one to unite them.
It’s here that William Wallace pops into the history books. In May of 1297, Wallace and a small group of other rebels murder the Sherriff of Lanark, supposedly in rebellion for the English Sheriff killing the woman that Wallace loved.
Later that same month the English and the Scottish forces met at the Battle of Stirling. Although the Scottish army was greatly outnumbered, they had a much stronger strategy. Wallace was formally knighted at Selkirk, a symbol of great respect for the man who was fighting so hard for Scottish freedom. Scotland was nearly free, if only for a moment.
But in April of 1298, King Edward received intelligence of the Scots nearby location at Falkirk. While the Scottish army still had strong tactics on their side, this time the English forces had Welsh longbowmen. It was a bitter defeat of the Scottish forces, who lost many men. But somehow, William Wallace had escaped capture.
In August of 1305, the luck of William Wallace ran out. He was seized near Glasgow when a Scottish knight betrayed him, revealing his location to Edward’s men. Wallace was brought to London where he was tried at Westminster Hall. During the trial, he uttered the iconic line: “I could not be a traitor to Edward, for I was never his subject.”
On the 23rd of August, William Wallace was hung, drawn and quartered as a grim reminder of what rebellion against the English would mean.
After his death, a new rebellion under Robert the Bruce would free Scotland. William Wallace is one of the most celebrated figures in Scottish history, and remains a national hero. - Zábava

No one even knows what he said….or if he said anything at all! Even the poem by blind Barry from which the massively historically inaccurate movie was inspired from was written two centuries after Wallace was dead!

I saw Braveheart in the theater when I was 13. I immediately fell in love with Scotland and the legend of Wallace. I found out years later I'm nearly 1/2 Scottish and got the pleasure of living in Scotland for about 3 months. It doesn't matter to me if Braveheart is 100% accurate. The meaning and imagery is baked into my soul. Much love to Scotland. ❤
Unfortunately, the William Wallace in the movie is a fictional character. The only person who would be known as "Braveheart" was Robert the Bruce who succeeded him. William Wallace was a bit on the heavy side for most of his life. 😉
@eddygonzalez6018 Yeah, I get that now. I got to go to the Wallace monument in Sterling. Pretty cool. When I watch Braveheart nowadays, I don't think of Wallace as a specific person. It's more like an ideal or a personification of the Scottish spirit. It's still a great story.

@@MrOx85 It comes from Wealas which is a germanic Saxon word that they used to describe the celtic Britons. Translates as others or foreigners. Wallace was born in Ayrshire and likely was descended from, on his paternal side, the Strathclyde Britons (or Welsh to use the Saxon term)

I work in the film industry in california, I have been on many motion picture sets..I just watched brave heart again because I couldn't sleep and again it brought tears to my eyes..I ended up here and have subscribed .Beautiful work ..thankyou

The main elements of the film are very accurate. Artistic liscense was enabled in more insignificant parts, but the movie is accurate.

I climbed the Wallace Monument in 2018. The staircase is narrow and winding; 246 steps from bottom to top. Fortunately, there are two anterooms off the staircase where one could catch their breath, and in one there was a rusted claymore that may have been Wallace’s sword. There was also a photo, to scale, of the sword standing on its point. My wife stood next to the photo of the sword and it was longer than she is tall; over 5 feet. Wallace must indeed have been a big man to handle a claymore that size. Darlington, South Carolina USA
Wallace's sword is made up of three swords and isn't his. However , claymores can be handled one armed , with your targe and Dirk in your other. But that swords for tourists.

I've visited Stirling, Scotland a couple of times and toured Stirling Castle and climbed the 246 steps to the top of Wallace Monument.
Stirling is a beautiful small town that I would highly recommend to anyone who gets the opportunity to visit.
The movie Braveheart is one of my favorites and I was always curious to know what William Wallace really looked like (because let's face it - I knew he couldn't have really looked like Mel Gibson). You did a fantastic job at recreating William Wallace, especially since you had so little to go on. You're an amazing artist and story teller, and I truly get swept away to another time listening to your stories. Thank you so much!

I’m Italian by heritage…but I was fortunate enough to grow up next door to 2 Scottish missionaries, a lovely couple who loved sharing about their country & its history. I want to see Scotland someday.

I worked with security guard in 2006, he was clan of Lindsey, Scottish. According to him. A scotsmen tackled Wallace, and another pulled him off. He didn't like Wallace disposition. He was kinda weird. He read romance books, and had a storage comportment.

Wallace is real. I once knew Scottish man from the Lindsey clan. He told me story that another clan member didn't like Wallace disposition, and tackled him. A Scottish man from Lindsey clan pulled him off Wallace. Each Scottish clan has their own colored skirts. Theirs other accounts I dont remember.

The point is that the events are so old that sorting truth from fanciful fiction in accounts is very difficult.
Also the period of Robin Hood predates Wallace by a generation of 2.
Edward I who attacked and occupied Scotland was the grandson of the infamous King/Prince John in the story.
That's correct, although 'Robin Hood' was a common pseudonym for 'outlaws' with unknown name. There are records of 'Robyn Hod', 'Robyn of Hoad' or even 'Robin Hood' in records ranging from the early 13th century to the 15th century.
The legend we all know today however bears great similarities to what we know of Wallace.
'Robin Hood' lived in Sherwood Forest, Wallace was known to live out of Ettrick Forest.
'Robin Hood' was a skilled Archer, Wallace's family seal has an Archer/Hunter and Wallace himself was said to be skilled with a bow.
'Robin Hood' has a friend in Friar Tuck, Wallace was very close to Bishop Wishart.
'Robin Hood' had Maid Marian, Wallace is said to have married Marion Braidfoot.
'Robin Hood' - Little John, Wallace had a friend named John Little.
'Robin Hood' - Will Scarlet, Wallace is said to have had a noble friend/acquaintance who would wear a Red robe/cloak.
We have to remember also, that at this time the North of England was in m any ways treated just as poorly by the 'South' as Scotland or Wales was. Taxes were often higher in the northern counties, much of the food grown or raised was sent south to London, so the people of the north were left with very little. This north/south divide which we talk about today was very much in place back then. The people of the northern counties were very much subjugated. A lot of the ill feeling dated back to the time of the Danelaw, the south saw themselves as superior, they'd looked to move on and saw themselves as more civilised that those who were under Norse control. It was classic snobbery.
Many in the north of England empathised with the Scottish cause as a result of this, so when word of Wallace came about they created their own 'folk hero' in effect comforting themselves, emboldening themselves into believing there was someone out there who was fighting for them.

Me to I’m the 22 nd great niece of William Wallace and my 22 nd great grandfather was Sir John Wallace of Elderslie. Ancestry DNA was the reason I have the information.
And I am a Crawford, related to Margaret Crawford. I must dig the family records out of storage and review them again, after seeing this!

When i was younger, Wallace was right up there with Bruce in my eyes. Ironically, that all began to unravel after the release of 'Braveheart'. I detest that film due to it's complete inaccuracy. I had known enough about Wallace growing up to know the film was insulting, but having a fascination with history since i was around the age of 4, i took the opportunity to research Wallace as much as i could.
Once the internet became common place, i have found out more, and more about the Man, and pieced together information from various sources, coming to the conclusion that Wallace was nothing more than a thorn in Longshanks arse. He was a pest, a nuisance, and nothing more. He had very little skill as a military Man. Looking at Braveheart, i believe memory serves me when i say Longshanks uttered a line along the lines of 'Wallace is a scrapper' (it may not have been Longshanks, but someone in that film uttered a line with that general meaning), and ironically, that was one of the very few things Braveheart got right, albeit accidentally. Wallace was just a scrapper.
As was mentioned in this video, the military mastermind behind the victory at Stirling Brig, was Andrew de Moray. He was the man who was a seasoned campaigner. He was present at the siege of Berwick in 1296, and was captured at the Battle of Dunbar, and imprisoned at Chester, while his father - Sir Andrew de Moray, was imprisoned in London, where was to see out his days. Andrew the younger, managed to escape from Chester in early 1297 and made his way back north where he led a revolt, taking back castles from English hands.
It would've been extremely arrogant of Wallace to assume command of the joint forces at Stirling Brig, since he was vastly the more inexperienced of the two Men. It was Moray's tactics which won the day, and we sadly, will never know how differently things may have turned out, had he not succumbed to the injuries sustained at Stirling.
Wallace is only remembered due to his execution. Longshanks just wanted him out the way, but Wallace kept popping up to irritate him, like that person we all know who doesn't know when to drop a joke, eventually, he had to be killed and so Longshanks had him done away with.
So, yes. Wallace wasn't a great Man in my eyes, he was certainly no great military leader, he was a scrapper, an angry Man with no strategy other than to cause disruption. The Man who deserves to be lauded and remembered, is Andrew de Moray. He was the leader. He was the Man who could have made a real difference.
I have watched a few of your videos, and finally subscribed. I am shocked that you only have 225K subscribers you should have more. As a graphic artist I am so impressed by the accurate depiction’s… Or even if it’s just your best shot! Not only do you provide a realistic, rendering of what the characters could have looked like, but you provide a lot of in-depth history and story and back ground. It’s like you’re a history/art channel I’ve really enjoyed the videos that I’ve been watching and I pray that 2023 will give you coveted CZcams rewards!
I love the idea of him having an appearance of a stern, even dangerous looking big bulky man but having a cheerful and warm personality. The English tried to erase him from history, executing him for high treason and burying him in an unmarked grave but after 700 hundred years, he is still with us.
I love this recreation of him. And I definitely don't mind the slight beautification in your recreations, as we will never know what these people really looked like, and I love seeing *your* perspective as well. Thanks so much for this video, I've heard of Sir William Wallace before but didn't know anything about him.

Really? Strange -as a Scotsman - I know that there are many more English accounts of Wallace's existence than contemporary Scottish ones. You only need to look at Wallace Society Orgs to know this. Get educated rather than believing in imaginary grievance.
@@JR-gc5ef Isn't Scotland under british rule now and in control of you guy's educational system? I don't know. What I do know is the history is always messy and while some groups manage to preserve history, other groups try to destroy, manipulate or control it lol I'm Native American. I know this of human nature from first hand account. It's ain't just black and white. Both you and og poster could be right at the same time.

When I was I watched Braveheart every Friday after school with a bunch of friends, and every Friday we reaffirmed our dislike for What our ancestors endured by the hands of the English. I am not Scottish or English. I don't get why they would want to be a part of the UK. I certainly would call Charles my king.
I grew up with my Scottish Grandfather. I loved his stories of the Scottish heros both military and civil. Wallace was the most prominent. When I grew older I became more critical of the mythos,, but I eventually realized Heros should be mythic . They inspire us to become better people . Thank you for reminding of great memories.
Braveheart was an awesome movie. I could watch it 50 times and still not be tired of it.
People hate on the film because its factually inaccurate. I couldn't care less its still highly entertaining . When I first watched it as a teenager I did naively think the film was 100% true . Later in life I bought a few books about him and very little information is actually known about him so I can forgive the writer (Randall Wallace I think?) and Mel Gibson for adding things to spice the story up
Brave heart is full of contradictions. Queen Isabella of France never met Wallace or king Edward. Wallace wasn't able military tactician. King Edward was military genius. Wallace was over 6 feet tall. The real hero is Robert Bruce. He defeated king Edward son, and freed Scotland. Hollywood won't tell you the truth.

My brother did like an ancestry thing and he said through our grandmother we’re related to William Wallace, both our great grandparents were from Glasgow, our great grandma was a Wallace and grandpa was a Stewart , both our grandparents were also from Glasgow, our great grandparents and grandparents came to the US from Scotland at the same time. I’ve never seen Braveheart

Not bad, actually really impressive. There are a lot of rubbish documentaries about Wallace out there but this one kept me hooked. Lovely touch on how he might of looked.

I was quite impressed by the Wallace Monument, and Wallace's Claymore. Such a brave man ! In spite of the historical mistakes, I really enjoyed "Braveheart".

I would love to see you try to tell story and show us what Catherine of Valois, more of Habsburg`s dynasty, i.e. Marie Therese, "Sissi", Charles and Zita Habsburgs, and other royalties from other parts of (medieval) Europe, but maybe also famous men and women known worldwidely as saints, like Francis and Claire of Assisi, Thomas of Aquinas, Augustin of Hippo, Therese of Avila, Rita of Cascia etc....as far as exist some portraits of them... would possibly looked like.
