    Great video!
    I just received a request for two wooden "knife and sheath set" as gifts and this gave me all the directions I need.
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the inspiration. I got a new Japanese-style marking knife for Christmas and was pondering 3d printing a sheath like this, but maybe I'll take the extra effort to make an even nicer one out of wood.

    I would love to see how you would go about making a traditional style saya where only the edge, spine, and tip touch on the inside. I have wooden magnetic sheaths for a couple of my nicer knives, but I have a beautiful handmade wa-gyuto that I want to make a custom-fit saya for sometime.

      that would be fun. I have one that I need to restore. it was damaged in a move and it would be interesting to fix it up.

    Does the purple color last with that finish? I've heard the film finishes help preserve the purple, but haven't worked with the wood myself.

      If you coat it in a UV finish it will keep some but even then it will turn dull in a few years due to oxidation. if you could fully seal it so no oxygen can get to the wood and no UV can get to ti then it will star. but most of the time with in a year or two it turns brownish.

    Cool video. I'm not sure the magnet was good idea. When you're sharpening the knife the metal particles always stick to the blade and it drives me nuts.but it is very functional I can't deny.

    Ok so I made a wooden legend of Zelda master dagger out of a wood stake and I want to now make a sheath for it what tools do you recommend for me to use

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  Před 2 lety +1

      I don't know if I would recommend anything, particularly. It all depends on which you want to look like. I actually just did a live tonight on the other channel talking through how I choose woods for different uses. But for something like that it's mostly just aesthetics.

      That is a depth tester. There's a rod that goes down through the middle and it's set so I can see if anything needs to be removed to bring it all down to the same depth.
