    Interestingly, that tiny "map" isn't due to errata. It's actually an overlay for one of the optional rules where three "mountain" hexes are turned into flat terrain.

    The worker units played a role in the '77 Avalon Hill edition. The Soviet player had to protectvthem from being captured or eliminated by the advancing Germans.

    A classic. I have the original Avalon Hill and I purchased this one and love it.(larger counters and map for older eyes) Brings back memories of over 40 years ago.

    OMG the Avalon version is the first wargame I played in the 1980s!

    Just started playing an Eastern Front game again at the opposite end of the spectrum from this one. It's Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 computer game.

    Oldy but a goody. umteen revisions later shows how good this '70's design has held up. I have "Russia Besieged" version and regularly play this to scratch my grand campaign east front itch. Nice job Grant, ty. By the way... it looks smaller now because we got larger over the years. LOL

    And through all the iterations of this great game, no one has modified the map to have a more geographically correct curve to the landscape. That is what's really needed. Maybe some day someone will release a map with that upwards curve. Take care.

      @allenmarston1015 Před rokem +1

      What do you mean... "curve"? I am considering picking this up, but the map is so ugly, I am going to have to redo it myself if I do.

      @@allenmarston1015 Ever look at a map of the combat area of this war and notice how from the invasion point to the Baltic countries to Leningrad, etc. the re is an upwards curve? Well, this game board, since the first release, made a map where it is like you straightened out the curve, and sort of shifted the entire map into a more southern curve. It is simply geographically incorrect. The iterations of this game have been great gamplay, but the game really needs a proper geographically corrected map, once and for all. The superior Russia Besieged suffers from this same problem, as it is basically this game ramped up to moderate complexity. Anyway, I haven't played this specific version, but played the different releases up to the L2 Design one, and always had a blast. It's just a really good game.. In fact, I may have played this more times than any other game in my life. Take care.

      So it seems you are talking about the use of a proper map projection... not Mercator for example?

      An odd thing to be concerned about. All maps are an interpretation. And I dont see how it has any bearing on playing the actual game.

    Really enjoy east front games, this one along with a few others on my wish list. Nice to see you up and about again. Many thanks for the unboxing.

    I played and still have the 1977 Avalon Hill version. Back in those days we played by snail mail. I picked up the optional mounted maps.

    I've brought games just for the maps. Well the plan was to play the game then not understanding the rules etc has led to the Map becoming a poster. Its called War Gaming.

    A true classic and extreme good game, mechanised movement and all these other things hex and counter strategic games should have.

    This map is such a let down. You would think they could have updated that too. Maybe if I get it, I will have to design my own.

      Yes...we're playing it now, I won the 1st one because my buddy pulled back as the Germans during '41 winter. Then he couldn't reach his '42 objectives...😅
