  • The New Year of 2002 was one of mixed emotions around the world, with the 9/11 terrorist attacks still in very recent memory in the United States, the 'Black Christmas' bushfires in Australia and major changes across Europe as several countries adopted the Euro as their new currency. Here's Carlton closing 2001 and into most of the ITV News coverage, with some brief looks at other channels including the first BBC One announcement of the new year. Both BBC1 and ITV1 would change significantly by the end of 2002 as two new looks would appear on the channels that year.
London did not have any firework display that year, this only became a regular occurence later in the decade.

I well remember this era and was 31 at the time. Makes me feel old as my father, still alive then, and three years before my brother Anthony emigrated. And I clocked up twelve years in my first job at that stage.

ITV should have a news channel like BBC and Sky to provide competition

@@carlainyonga7009 Correct and it was shut down in 2005 due to financial losses and the channel space was later occupied by CITV.

ITV being cheap as always for New Year's Eve. In fact now they do the same, a short news programme leading into Big Ben at midnight.

Not every channel needs to do the same as BBC One in terms of New Year's celebrations.

@@MateusHonrado They could have offered a studio based entertainment show. Some of their regions did, such as Scottish Television and UTV. Having a bland news bulletin just looks cheap for Britain's largest commercial television channel, which is known for producing excellent variety entertainment.

@@johnking5174 They have done it before and not every channel needs to be like BBC One and Two in terms of stuff like this. Sorry but it's true.
